Junking it

One of my very favorite places to shop is our scrap wood pile. After we do projects, the bits & ends go to the pile to wait for our next brush burning event (remember, we live in the country). It is no rare sight to see me trapse out there for inspiration for a morning project before going to work (I get up a couple of hours early to have time for creative efforts).

When looking for art for my laundry room, I began my search at the scrap pile. I knew I wanted word art, so a small scrap of luan served as the base for my "a lovely life" sign.

I wrote out the French phrase on a sheet of paper that was roughly the size of my piece as the lavendar base coat dried. Once dry, I wrapped it around the piece and taped it down on the back.

Taking a "dead" pen (or you could use a burnishing tool), I traced over the letters over and over, pressing down hard to make the impression.

Next, using a small paint brush, I painted over the indented print. It definitely looks hand painted!

Once dry, I drilled holes into the corners for scraps of copper wire to go through.

C'est magnifique!

  3. I finally had a chance to catch up on your posts. The chair find was wonderful. You did a great makeover. Your new sign is sweet. And last, but not least, I want to make a chalkboard for the party, but even though I have a bunch of cabinet doors, and old window, and most likely something else hiding in a box, I don't think crafting projects will be on the agenda. Oh, well, looking at everyone else's creations will be fun. Right now, I need to find sheets for the bed, or I will be using a sleeping bag again.

  17. Darling idea, TY so much for sharing it. Brilliant in its simplicity; )

It's been challenging this last little while for me. Because of that, my focus has wavered, but my heart is good in spite of blue-screened Fatal Errors, crashes, 'puter woes. I've had dr. appts AND our air went out (I'm in south Florida... 95 yesterday) so I've not been on my blog nor have I come 'round to visit. Interesting week; )

Great list today on MaidenShade Matters, "How Long Can I Keep It? Shelf Lives for Common Foods".

  20. I recently raided the scrap pile too. I had to fish my pieces of wood BACK out of the pile three times I kid you not! Where is the vision? Could they not see the potential? :)

    Love your sign!

  23. OOoh, your last thing caught my attention - I have a chalkboard wall. I may just have to feature it.

Your Laundry Room art is great. I think laundry rooms are under decorated in general, so I'm pleased that you showed us a fun art project for your laundry area. :)

I have an idea for a chalkboard and the paint bought to do it. I will try to get it done for your party. Sounds like fun.
