For this project you will need:
an old pillow
2 pillow cases
scissors
a piece of a cardboard box (I ripped mine, you could use a box knife)
a roll of masking tape
contact paper (clear is best, but any works)
an Exacto knife
a print (I found mine at Graphics Fairy -- she's got cool stuff and would love for you to stop by!)
a sewing machine

First cut the pillow apart, casing and all.

Next pull it out of the casing, and fluff it up (cause mine was old and smushed up).

Put it back in the casing, and use a sewing machine to sew it up. You could use a pillow form, but I didn't have one. I did, however, have an old pillow that no one used, so I created two pillow forms from the one original pillow.

After you have them stitched up, slide it into the pillowcase.

Down each side, cut a slit in the pillowcase until you are 1/3 from the top (leaving the fabric to the end 2/3 of the form).

Then pull the "flap" over the cut out portion.

Next, you will cut off the flap, where there is a good overlap on the cut beneath it. I pulled mine down 2/3 of the way and cut across. This will give you hem room and also overlap to hold the form securely.

Next, hem the portion you just cut off, so that the hem faces the inside when wrapped around the pillow.

Then, turn it all inside out and tuck the flap into the pocket.

Fold up both sides and run a stitch from top to bottom, making sure that all edges are secure.

Then turn it back right side out and the hemmed flap will stay on the outside.

Now, insert that piece of cardboard and center it into the middle of the pillow slip.

Next, use your print to make a stencil, using the same method as the "Stenciled Canvases" tutorial. I used the same stencil for two pillows.

Let it dry and you are ready to slide the pillow form in and put it in place.

Excellent tutorial! I love the pillow and the bee. This has me thinking about how I might could do this?! Thanks for sharing!

Love the pillow with the bee. I have been trying to find a bee image without any luck. I went to Graphics Fairy, but couldn't find it there either. (I could be having a blonde senior moment) Could you share exactly where you found it at Graphics fairy?
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Toni

Gina!! Love, love love it!! It is adorable!! Keep and eye on the mails box! There is a goodie coming your way! Hugs, Vanessa
ReplyDeleteGina, great tutorial! Lots of pictures really make it easier to follow. The bee pillow is adorable!

I LOVE this! I've got to do it! I've been eyeing those type of pillows forever... the ones with the bee, initials or fleur di lis. Way to make one on a budget!
ReplyDeleteCute...cute...CUTE! Love the pillow...especially the reuse of a sad ol' pillow! FYI...another way to do this would be to print the graphic on photo transfer paper, on your home printer or at a copy place. The image would be very detailed, as opposed to the stencil image. We print a lot of stuff like this at the shop where I work...so just another idea. *elaine*
ReplyDeleteAdorable!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day.
Blessings,
Great use of what you have. I love the finished pillow. The little bee is just adoreable. Great tutorial. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteI really love your pillow...and a great tutorial besides! Thanks for the shout out!
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous! Thanks for sharing the directions. Elaine, I was thinking the same thing about using the photo transfer paper.

Elaine & Jane - Thanks for the reminder about the photopaper, but I just didn't have any at home. Not shopping all week has made me think a little harder and be a little more creative.
ReplyDeleteToni (The Tattered Cottage) - I sent you the print in your email!
Oh, I LOVE it! So simple but so cute.
ReplyDeleteLove it.....and love making pillow's.
ReplyDeleteNeat post!
Oh I ADORE this! Well done smarty pants! :)
ReplyDeleteNapolean would be envious as he loved and used the bee image everywhere.
That bee is so classy! I really would love to find a stamp like that because I don't have enough confidence in myself with making my own stencil. I love that pillow! Linda
ReplyDeleteThanks for leaving a comment , I love them too , especially to meet news friends ,

Hi Gina,
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun project, the pillow turned out great! I'm so glad you were able to find such a good use for my little graphic. Thanks so much for giving me credit!
Karen
I just love this!!! I have a dragon-fly Asian-inspired pattern on our drapes, which I think I will mirror on some throw pillows in the living room. To be truthful, I was a little confused with the pillow-sham sewing instructions until I figured out that you were making a simple slip-cover and was like "oh!"(I would say I am a beginner-intermediate seamstress.) But I think the idea, and the finished product are fabulous! Thanks for the insipration. Abbie
ReplyDeleteThat turned out so pretty! Aren't you clever? laurie
ReplyDeleteHello, am I the only one that can't find the honey bee on the site listed...I have searched this site and no honey bee to be found....
ReplyDeleteThat is very cute and very resourceful!
ReplyDeleteI love it! Such a great cheap idea. I love your background as well.
