Pillows on the cheap

Are ya'll tired of pillow talk yet? How about a way to get them for cheaper? Yeah, "cheaper" always gets my attention, too! There are two main ways I do pillows. The cheapest way is to find fluffy & comfy, but ugly, pillows at yard sales or thrift stores and recover them. My price point is less than $1. If I can rescue a 50 cent pillow by adding a little fabric, then it's a good deal. I have found one that was about $2, but I liked it just as it was, no other work involved.

However, if I'm going to make them from scratch, then this is where I actually "cheat." Instead of purchasing premade pillow forms or a bag of batting from the fabric store/section, I go over to the bedding section at Wal-Mart and buy a $5 pillow, cut it in half and then I have two new pillow forms.

I just stitch them up, add on a removable, washable slip cover and I'm good to go! Ya'll know I love me some canvas drop cloth, so stop back by tomorrow for Transformation Thursday to find out where I get them on the cheap!

  1. I am so NOT sick of pillow talk! You've inspired me to add more pillows! I have sewn 3 pillows in 2 days and they are my first pillows to sew EVER! So thank you for all the advice!! I hope to post about them soon. I love your blog so much...!

  2. Great idea!!
I recently used an old pillow we had around here to create a new one. I wondered why I never thought of it before. Necessity is always the mother of invention...

  3. I love the idea of cutting the pillow in half to make two forms! And, no, I'm not tired of pillows.

  6. What a great idea... I have done this very thing in the past and it works great...

I swear my lightbulb doesn't get enough power sometimes... you are so right it is so much cheaper to "buy" a cheap pillow and make them... I have some cushions to be made and I have been procrastinating because I know stuffing is not cheap to purchase... I am off to buy pillows at Walmart... thanks so much for the great idea... and no I am not sick of your pillow talk, I love it... please don't stop.

PS Thanks so much for stopping by and becoming one of my treasured fans... hope to see a lot of you.

  8. Your idea is genius...I cant tell you how stupid I feel right now. With 5 children do you know how many pillow I throw away a year. Im always buy 2-3 everytime I go to Walmart! They do have such good deals..even Target sometimes. But I always have to have 4 fluffy but firm pillows on my and hubbys bed. Then 2 each for the 5 children...thats alot of pillows. Ugh, well I will now recycle, reuse and reduce! And have lots of fabulous little pillows for my going green. Thanks for sharing....brilliant!
