creating a cloth basket

Simple things make me happy.
 Simple projects do, too.
Like this little cloth basket, perfect for small things, like clothes pins.
A quick 10 minute project - which makes it that much sweeter!
First, you'll need 2 pieces of fabric, 12x16 inches (for the basket),
and 4 strips cut 1x12 inches (for the handles).
I like ripping the edges for the salvage look.
Next, take a piece of scrap cardboard
and cut a 3x3 inch square,
which will be a cut out for the pattern.
(A girl's gotta have Twinkies!)
Put your two basket pieces of fabric together,
use 3 inch pattern and cut out a square from each corner.
Separating the pieces,
sew up the corners of each piece.
You only need a small seam,
about 1/8 inch will do.
Once you have your form complete,
run a thin seam around the bottom edge,
 to help create some structure.
The outside fabric doesn't need the seam, though.
Then, turn the outside fabric right side out
and put the inside layer into it.
Now for the handles.
(You could also use ribbon, and skip the next step.)
Take the strips, put them together and
sew a seam down the middle to keep them together.
Now measure one inch from each end
and mark with a disappearing ink pen.
Insert between the layers on the ends of the basket,
using your mark to keep them even.
Keep the outside edge even with the corner.
Straight pin them into place, and place a few more
around the sides to help keep it all in place.
Stitch all the way around the top of the basket.
Sew simple!

  1. This is awesome!!
Did you ever try putting cardboard in it to make it more 'solid'?
Maybe it keeps it's shape pretty good already.

    Thanks for sharing it.

Please enter my name in your drawing too. =0))

  24. 10 minutes? I love it!!! Looks really cute. I can see loads of uses for a cute little basket like that... To make it more sturdy you could even put in some cardboard before you sew up the sides. Great project!
