Making magnets

Welcome to Transformation Thursday! It's the one day of the week we all get together to celebrate getting things done. No matter if this is your first time joining, or you've been here for months, everyone is welcome to share all their projects, big or small.

Been to the beach? I'm guessing even if you haven't that you probably have some seashells, right?
Let's make magnets!

You'll need:
plaster of Paris (a $5 tub lasts FOREVER!)
seashells
water
a bendable cup
A fork
button magnets
a bowl of sand or epsom salt
button magnets (make sure they are strong enough to hold some weight)

First nestle your seashells into the sand, so that the tops are level.
Mix a little plaster (it doesn't take much) with some water.
You're looking for pancake batter consistency.
Bend the cup and make it a spout to pour it almost level with the top.
If you spill out, it's ok. Just clean it up when it's damp, but not quite dry.
Overfill? Dip a paper towel into the plaster to pull a little out.
Let the plaster set for a minute or two and then carefully put the magnet into the plaster.
If you don't fill enough, that's ok - we can fix that, too. Take a second magnet...

And put it on the first one.
You can use Amazing Goop or E-6000 to glue them together.
Let them dry about 10 minutes (or per directions) and you're good to go!
Sooooo..... Whatcha got? I wanna see & so does everybody else! Make sure to put your PERMALINK (that's the direct link to the specific post) and then link back here so everybody can find the great ideas. Then stop and visit a couple of folks - we all love comments :)

Well..... Let'er rip, tater chip!

  4. Cool beans. I like that idea of filling the backs of something to make it level first. I never thought of that. That sure opens up all kinds of things for me to do here at the house!
    Thanks for the tip.

  19. The seashell magnets are adorable.
I just made a seashell mirror. I suppose if you didn't have enough shells you could make some like these.

  20. Good heavens! I learned to do this in the first grade and had forgotten all about it...what memories it brought back.
We put little bunnies in a spoon and then filled it with plaster, put a safty pin in it and and let it harden and and that's what our Mom's got for mothers Day...this is similar...and SO cute...thanks for the memories! :)

  30. Gina, what a great idea! I LOVE the magnets. We used to live 45 minutes away from the ocean. Now we live in Arizona and George Strait lied!! There is NO ocean front property out here! lol So the shell magnets would be a nice "homey" touch.

Thank you for hosting another great party! :)

  34. Gina, These are darling! I want to make some of those!! I've been on vacation and have been extremely busy with extended family's visits and moves but thought I'd drop by to say Hello. I'm texturing and painting my bathroom and counter tops! But nothing is officially done, so I'm not posting anything. Hopefully I'll have some time to show off some of my renovation work soon.

    Have a great week!
