Labor of Love

My sweet husband spent 9 hours yesterday building new chairs. Nine hours he could have spent watching his favorite episodes of NCIS. Or riding 4 wheelers. Or just doing anything other than measuring, cutting, measuring, sanding, measuring, drilling, making mistakes, fixing those mistakes, then measuring and cutting some more. DIY FireplaceRather than the fact of saving a few dollars, his goal was to create something that I loved. I’ve known for quite some time that building things is the way he shows me that he loves me. I rarely receive flowers. I only have a couple of pieces of jewelry to my name. He puts his heart and soul into creating things that make me smile.IMG_7420 I think it’s because he “gets” me. After a decade of marriage I sure hope so. He understands me on a level where he knows I’d rather spend a day at a flea market than I would shopping at the finest clothing stores. And that new fabric is more important to me than new shoes.

So as I slipcover the cushions of the new chairs he lovingly built for me, “The House that Built Me” by Miranda Lambert keeps playing over and over in my mind.

And that makes me insanely happy.

  1. He sounds like my husband and you sound much like me. I don't like shopping unless is it flea markets, fabric stores and plant nurseries! I can't wait to see your new chairs! Enjoy your Sunday!

  2. How sweet it is for your husband to understand you the way he does and for the way you understand him the way you do. How wonderful it is that your husband can find the time to build you furniture. My husband is in the construction, so he doesn't want do much of constructing anything on his day off. I have to start working on him!

  3. Beautifully written! My husband knows that I prefer to vacation at a beach cottage or mountain shack then a 5 star hotel. I love to antique and thrift store shop instead of going to the mall. He finds a huge, gorgeously aged piece of drift wood and brings that home to me instead of diamonds. I love him!

  12. Gina, I can so relate to you and you husband sounds like a great guy. This is one of the reasons I started to blog. I would much rather paint a room, go to garage sales instead of the mall, and get a piece of furniture as a gift than jewelry. Can't wait to see those chairs!
    Happy Sunday, Marianne :)

  15. I love that! If my husband tried to build me something it would be the biggest mess you ever saw. But he shows his love by letting me have my own power tools and play with wood all I want. :)

To each his own. Love the chairs! Lisa~

  16. Gina!
Oh, my, we have more in common than I realized! My hubby is a handy guy and works harder than many of my friends husbands. He shows such pride in our home and in making this house a home for us both. I just mention that something needs attention or please build this and he is in working mode! Right now he is finishing a huge project...rebuilding our two wood decks in the backyard!!

I must confess I do love jewelry and he has bought me some very nice pieces but now I am happier if we shop at the flea markets and spend the weekends at estate sales! What fun it is to be with someone who "gets" me and loves me so much too....it's kept us together nearly 45 years, so far!!

Can't wait to see your new chairs and BTW, I love your new fireplace! You have done a great job of decorating it and Mr SCC built a winner!!

    Hugs,
    Georgia

  17. Well fine make me cry!!!!! I love this post, I love how much our lives mirror each other. My Hubby shows me love in much the same way, and the same things excite me (well I do love shoes). The House that Built Me has even more meaning to the two of us, because our houses have been in our lives more that most other peoples houses. Our house continue to build us and us them, that is what makes it a home.

from Better Homes and Garden Magazine
    Plans were drawn, concrete poured
