Welcome to Transformation Thursday! It’s the one day of the week we all get together to celebrate getting things done. Whether this is your very first time or you’ve been hanging out here every week for months (or years!), everyone is welcome to join their projects big or small at the bottom of this post.
I’ve been shopping for chairs for quite some time now – and couldn’t quite find anything that worked in my room (or my budget.) Even the thrift store was a no go. Drats! So… I wondered if I (well, the hubs) could build some. I searched online for plans, and didn’t find anything either. Double drats. I did, however, find a really basic shape wood frame chair during my search… so the gears started turning.
We bought a $15 loveseat at the chair-less thrift store, because it was much, much cheaper than buying foam, and bonus: we used the springs. $25 worth of lumber later Mr. SCC had a plan.
I don’t have plans for you – but I can tell you that the legs were made out of 2x4s, ripped in half, 2x6s made the “box” part, and the back legs are one curved piece, cut out of a 2x8. There are three 2x2 pieces for support on the back. (Mr. SCC is still learning that I need photos – lots of photos!)
I used an electric knife to cut the cushions to the right size. *Tip: If you cut foam buy one – it zips right through it!* **Bonus Tip: If there is batting already on the foam, cut it with scissors first, electric knives aren’t great at cutting the batting.**
My favorite ticking was the finishing touch, and it was so easy to slipcover them that I think I’m gonna do different covers just because I can :)
$40 for 2 chairs – pretty sweet, eh? Of course you can buy similar ones for about $150 each, but then we’ve already talked about that…

ReplyDeleteThose chairs have the perfect look of aged wood! Nice job!
ReplyDeleteOh, you need the "beach" sign I found at TJMaxx - it's at the top of my linked post. Or you could make it, I'm sure!
ReplyDeleteThe chairs are so cute! TY for hosting I love seeing what everyone else is up to! Lots of inspiration going on!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! I LOVE your chairs!! I wish my hubby was crafty/handy, but alas, his gifts just aren't in the home improvement arena. I'll just have to admire yours and pay $$ for mine! lol.
ReplyDeleteThe chair turned out awesome! I'd love for you to submit it to the M&T Spotlight at http://www.makeandtakes.com/spotlight
ReplyDeleteWow, what a handy man! I love that you found a cheaper way of adding cushions. I am always on the lookout at garage sales for foam because otherwise it is so expensive. Usually I can get it for free. Who would want that stuff? ME!

Oh my, your chairs are gorgeous! Love the pillows too!
ReplyDeleteGina, I am so sorry, I just realized my link at 40 is not working so I re-entered my link. It was the Formal Living Room B & A with a pic of the fireplace. Sorry!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea on the chair! I love having things that I can change out the cushion covers as I see fit. Ya' know, I don't think electric knives were ever so popular until everyone realized how great they were for cutting foam! LOL!!!
