My impossible mission: The Laundry Room

laundry room before 1
Welcome to my laundry room – she’s a beaut, huh? Yeah, I know it’s not the worst space in the world, but it’s got a lotta wrong stuff going on, and I’m soooo ready to give it the attention it needs. That door is the main door for my house. It’s not the front door, but it is the one that everyone basically enters and exits from. Notice all the spots painted aqua? That just didn’t work out in here.

The one thing that does work is this folding station. It was once our kitchen island, and it was the first piece of furniture we ever built. I loved it so much that I just can’t bear to part with it… so it got moved to the hallway when we put the big table in our kitchen. Right past the island is the kitchen, hence the ziplock bags, etc. being stored here. It’s the one space that actually functions properly :)

I hate these cabinets. Okay, well hate may be a strong word – and it’s not the entire cabinet I hate, just the doors. We’ll be giving these a makeover – nearly 8 years after they were installed. Oh my…. I can’t believe I’ve ignored them that long!

This curtain will also be going away. Once upon a time it hid a nook that we used as a broom closet. We took that nook out to create more space in our master bath(which is right behind this wall), but I left up the curtain because there were naked studs that we never covered…. and that was a year ago. I’m such a slow DIYer!

So why air my dirty laundry room? Because my friend Andrea is hosting a challenge along with a few other bloggers: Tackle a daunting task in January. I could just pick the doors… or the walls…. or even removing the curtain – but y’all know I’m an over-achiever :) Since my laundry room was on my 2012 To-Do List, it’s the perfect place to start. Crossing my fingers that Mr. SCC can pull it off!

  6. I fear my to-do-list has changed much this year! #1 catch up and stay caught up on laundry.
#2 time to figure out WHERE to put a nursery (totally worth the reconfiguration)

    I will be watching!

  8. Wow - I can't wait to see the finished product. We are in similar boats - I am trying to get rid of 16e years worth if "stuff" in my dark dreary basement then organize what's left!

Glad you are taking the challenge with us!

  13. OH Gina I had to laugh because we have similar laundry rooms size wise. I refer to ours as the utila-corridor as ti also contains the furnace, water softener, and hot water heater. Thankfully only the family comes in there as it is the entrance from the garage (think black hole of calcutta!)

So this year I am going for whole room "remodels/completions." Yep, laundry room, kitchen/dining room, family room, 3 bedrooms, living room, and spare room. LOL I guess that is the ENTIRE house! Oh well we have graduation in May/June so it all needs to be done before then.

I can't wait to see what you have in store!

  16. You go girl! You are very brave to air your dirty laundry , um I mean laundry room. LOL I have one too. Mine is also on my To-Do list, but I am putting it off until last because I want a new stacking washer/dryer to make more space for a new pantry. Oh....it just never ends does it. Good luck with yours, can't wait to see what you do.

  17. There are some good bones here, to be sure! Could you get away with open cabinets? If not, how about mini Roman shades?! Is that crazy?

  20. It'll be so great for you to get this done, especially since it's a busy, walk-through space... Can't wait to see.

I'd intended doors on the cabinets of our laundry room, but they never got done. Even though I'm not really an open-shelf gal for the kitchen, I've found I now prefer it in the laundry room. Easy to see and grab things, and if something hangs over the shelf a bit, it's no big deal.

  21. Gina,

I know your laundry room will look great! We have many projects we started and never finished in our home. Some that were started 9 and 1/2 years ago when we moved in! The goal is to knock out a lot of those this year. Painting the exterior of our house is on that list and that will be a big job, even though we have a little house (with a scary-steep roof!).

One thing I notice is the bottom of you door. It is in need of some weatherstripping so you can save some money this winter. And everyone needs to save money these days!

Can't wait to see your inspiration. It only dawned on me after I became a blogger to actually "decorate" my laundry room!

    Jenny
