Who loves a good industrial style DIY? ME! This one is fun and super easy!
Y’all already know that I’m a little bit crazy. I try to keep it all to myself in real life, but occasionally it just kinda creeps out of me. A few months ago I was in a parking lot and there was this old truck with a TON of scrap metal in the back. Since I live in the deep south, that sight is pretty common. This time, however, there was a little something aqua that just begged me to take a second look.
There were 3 of these industrial drawers. Have mercy. While I was gawking at them, the owner of the truck walked up and I offered to buy them. $10 for all 3 – score!
Then I took them home, unloaded them and looked at them for 3 months before I finally figured out what to do with them. Chalkboard…. the answer is always chalkboard!
DIY INDUSTRIAL DRAWER CHALKBOARD
First I sanded them down. Since I’m not a big expert on metal – I asked my BFF who is an expert at an industrial metal fabrication company. She told me to sand it down, prime it, and then spray with the chalkboard paint. So that’s what I did. I started with a coarse grit sand paper, then smoothed it out as best as I could with a fine grit.
I taped off all the bits that I wanted to keep – you know all that good, chippy, yummy, stuff. Then I coated it with 2 coats of primer and 3 coats of chalkboard paint. Just the spray stuff – nothing fancy.
And in a couple of hours I magically had a chalkboard. Seriously easy stuff.
I think I forgot to mention that before the taping, I clear coated the outside with a sealer to keep the rust off my walls. I’m forgetful sometimes. Ok, a lot of times.
Currently I’m using it for my spring travel schedule… after June I’m thinking it will get moved to my new studio. Looks like between now and then I have a lot of packing to do 🙂
