finding perfection

IMG_6438 Perfection is daunting. I strive for it, but always, always fall short. I know this, but time after time I look for the “perfect” piece of furniture, or the “perfect” fabric for curtains. Since perfection is more of an idea than a reality, I never find it.

I searched for months and months to find fabric for curtains for my living room. I’ve blogged about it before, but even when I found the “perfect” one, the price was anything but. Dropping $200 for drapes just isn’t my style. Kinda makes me a little sick to my stomach to even think about it. Yeah, I know… I’m a cheapskate.

After a billion attempts to find the perfect premade curtains or even the fabric to make them, I gave up. I used plain, cheap substitutes for a long time, just to cover the windows while I was waiting on Mr. Right Drapes. And then I finally found some chairs. Ahhhh!!! Now I was on a mission – and began my search all over again. Just as frustrated as my first round of “Find the Fabric,” my second didn’t go much better.
IMG_6426 Then a few weeks ago, we were culling out fabric that was spilling out of my over-stuffed bins. What did I find? The perfect fabric! I purchased this aqua & cream stripe several months ago, but didn’t really know what to do with my clearance rack find, so I stuck it in a bin. (Am I the only one that buys fabric with absolutely no purpose in mind for it?)

There wasn’t quite enough to run the stripes vertical, so I turned it the other way and pieced it together to run them horizontal – ah ha! It worked. I can’t express how perfect these are for my quickly coming together space. The color is just right, the bold stripes makes such a pretty statement and it gave me the push that I needed to get more done to complete on of the last two rooms that needed a huge overhaul.

The moral of the story? Next time you think you can’t find the “perfect” thing, dig a little deeper, because the perfect fabric for my curtains was right in my house the entire time. I’d say that’s perfectly fitting, don’t you think?

  5. Gina, thanks for this post! Just this morning I was switching up pillows and contemplating slipcovering my green sofas because I am sick of them. I keep thinking the "perfect pillow" will fix all the problems in my space. I'm going to look in my fabric bins now! Lol!

  6. Yes, I buy fabric for the sheer love of it! Especially if it is a good buy, I can always find something to make with it eventually.

  8. Gina- LOVE that you shopped your own fabric stash and found the perfect thing! lol It looks just great and I really like the stripes running horizontally. I, too, have so many fabrics to use up-and no idea at all how some of it will be used. Great how it is coming together. xo Diana

  9. Hi Gina,
I must confess that I have a stash of fabric that I love! From time to time I use it to make pillows but I just can't pass up pretty fabric.
I love your strip curtain panels, they are lovely.

  11. I certainly like the moral of the story even if I'm the one who doesn't buy fabric till I need it. But that's probably because I never need it. I can't sew.
