Day 31: staying inspired

All month long we’ve talked about how to embrace your space, where you are with what you have. It’s been just as inspiring for me as it seems to have been for you. I’ve loved all your comments, tweets, emails, and messages – sharing your journey to contentment that I’ve been taking along with you. I’m honestly always amazed when I find that there are others out there with the same struggles that I have, because from the outside looking in, we see the perfection of others and compare it to our flaws. We’ve taken this entire month to explore all of those feelings, and hopefully I’ve inspired you just a little to make your home exactly what you want it to be.

Inspiration can come from a million and one places in our high tech world: Pinterest, blogs, Facebook, Instagram, magazines, and my favorite of all… books. When you find a book that you connect with to the core, then it becomes a part of you. Maybe it’s a work of fiction, an autobiography, or it might just be a decorating book. No matter which kind of literary work it might happen to be, when you do find that one book that inspires you, it’s like a nugget of gold.

My sweet friend Marian, or you may know her as Miss Mustard Seed, recently wrote a gorgeous book that’s one of those kind for me. Although there are a few tutorials, it’s mostly the story of her home and how she made it hers on a shoestring budget.

She’s been such an inspiration through her blog for years, but there is something so tangible about holding an actual book in your hands with her ideas that makes it come to life even more. Between her love affair for painted furniture and her use what you have spirit – it’s an attainable and affordable look that anyone can achieve.

No matter if you love her signature look with the chippy vintage vibe, or if you’re just looking to learn more about how to embrace your own personal look – this book is a winner on all levels.

*Thanks to Thomas Nelson for providing the book for this review.*

  1. I would really enjoy reading her book – its on my list, just hasn’t happened.
I am inspired by order, creativity and reading your blog! I finally found LED lights so I can make cute flower lights too!

  2. Great giveaway! Thank you for the wonderful inspiration from your blog, MMS, and others too numerous to mention.

  3. I am inspired by many blogs and lots of magazines. Lately, I am just embracing the idea of going with what I love and not worrying about what others might think. :)

  4. I’m inspired by water, I love all of it, oceans, lakes, etc…

  5. I’d love to win this book! I’m inspired when I see a space that says, “Welcome! This space reflects who I am.” (Not just a copy of something from Pottery Barn or a current popular style.)

  6. I am always inspired by other DIY bloggers, especially ones that break out the power tools and build things themselves. It motivates me to stop wishing a make a difference in our house. Great giveaway. MMS’s book is on my list of reads!

  7. I find my family inspirational. I can “pin” all kinds of images for home ideas, but when it comes right down to it, every change that I make is inspired by wanting a home for our authentic selves.

Thanks for the chance – - this book sounds like a fabulous read!

  8. I am inspired by other people and the examples they lead by.

  9. I am inspired by nature! All of the colors and textures! It’s amazing to me.

I would love to read this book!

  10. I am inspired by the creativity of others and mostly by their faith in God!

  11. Lovely giveaway – it looks like a ‘must read’ book for those of us who love to create on a tight budget! I’m inspired by my desire to make our home a place of simplicity and quiet beauty, a sanctuary for our family and a place of welcome for friends who visit. I rarely get out to shop, but there are a few local stores that really get my creative juices flowing … I rarely buy anything but instead go home wondering how I can re-create the object of inspiration with inexpensive items or things I already have.

  12. I have to admit one of the things that inspires me is an old Pottery barn book.. but more importantly my Mom and Grandma. Maybe I should say those are the top of my list but the list really is quite extensive…. :) so mom, grandma, books, blogs, travels abroad…

    Thank you for this opportunity!!

  13. I am inspired by color wherever I find it. It could be from anywhere. My favorite inspiration is the mixtures of color, texture, and pattern in nature.
I’d love to win an actual book. Love the Internet but holding a book, touching and turning the pages, and being able to return to the same page later cannot be beaten. Can you tell I was a librarian?

  15. Well of course MMS inspires me and I would be beyond thrilled to win…

What really inspires me is children… the wonder and excitement over the smallest details. The way they don’t take everything so seriously… even in decorating I need to remember this! Don’t be so serious and take a risk every now and then, with paint or a new rug…etc.

  16. I’m still figuring out what inspires me! For so many years, I’ve cared more about function than form… now I want both. After 15 years of marriage, I am finally refusing to just use what we’ve always had. I have found that I am most inspired by eclectic looks. With that in mind, I have been collecting things that “speak to me.” We’ll see how it goes!

  17. There are so many things that inspire me–but mainly it is my family and the desire to to feel content just being home…

  18. I have an inner inspiration to make my home a place where we can be happy.

  19. you inspire me friend! but, i’m also inspired in my studio…raw materials…stones…and the idea of creating something new that someone may love. xoxo

  20. I am inspired by my family and really want to make a house our home.

  21. Some things that inspire me: a decorating magazine (or book!), a new lamp, the changing seasons, a family gathering, a clean house, a need for change, moving one decor item from one room to another – I could go on and on!
Thank you for the giveaway- I’m sure this book is very inspirational!

  22. Reading blogs and a few magazines gives me great inspiration!

  24. I’ve stumbled on your 31 day challenge this afternoon… I would say it was by accident but I think it was, in reality, fate. See, we moved into our first house this summer and I have been on a tear trying to get it decorated ‘just so’. My husband confronted me last night saying (gently) that we need to trim back a bit on the expenses. Learning to love where you live is what I needed to do today. My biggest inspiration is my family and it’s for them that I will learn to love my space (and tweak it when I can!) Thank you!

  25. This book sounds like a great tool to inspire us all! My inspiration comes from marrying my high school sweetheart 38 years ago and wanting our home to always be a fun, safe, beautiful and comfortable blessing to all who enter.

  26. I’m inspired by reading decorating blogs and Pinterest of course! I would love to win this book. Thanks for a great giveaway!

  28. I’m inspired by my surroundings…friends, family, life, and love.

  29. Honestly, people like you inspire me (and I’m not sucking up either!) because I’m one of those people who buys stuff at Pottery Barn trying to hold out for a sale. But bloggers like you show me, I can save a lotta dough by DIYing it and I found I look at PB a little differently now!

  30. I’ve been inspired by you this past month with your month-long series. I’m in my forever-house, and it is pretty well the way I like; but I’m always seeking change. Your series has given me some different insights that have helped change my attitude. Thanks. Sally

  31. Inspiration–comes from many places but its your Thursday’s transformation Thursday that helps me get ideas and see things on what I could do with my home.

  32. I am inspired by feelings I get when I am in certain places or see certain things. I just know that it is me! It is an “aha” moment and I try to recapture that when I decorate or set goals for life. I am always looking at things around me and seeing what beauty is in the simple stuff. Books are great for this so I thank you for the giveaway!

  33. I am inspired by colors! A certain shade of red or even a pairing of grey and orange get my creative juices flowing and I can’t wait to begin painting, sewing or crocheting something. Color is my ultimate inspiration.

  34. I am so inspired by all the people healping those that had their lives turned upside down by Sandy. Makes me proud to be an American.

  35. I am inspired by church – without faith live is pretty empty.

  36. i am inspired by those who give of themselves so selflessly. without any acknowledgement or fanfare, they strive to make life better to those who are less fortunate. they are my heroes and my inspiration.

  37. I am inspired by many things, but mostly by things that say peace and relatation to me like water, a comfy chair, a hot cup of coffee, etc.

  38. Miss Mustard Seed is one of my all time FAVS! Would love to have her book!

  41. I am inspired by the many bloggers who share their talents

  42. I love reading and this book looks like it would be a great read and very beneficial in many ways, we all need a push now and then. Great give a way!

  43. I’m inspired by people being “real” and not going with what designers say or the current trends are. You and Marian are both “real” and I so appreciate that! I love color, funky things as well as some bling. :)

Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  45. Inspiration can come from looking at the simpliest of things, an orange, tree bark, cracks in the sidewalk and of course blogs and books. Look with the eyes of a child, you’ll never be short of inspiration.

  50. Lovely giveaway!

  51. I lost a great job in 2008 due to company consolidations and I’ve been floundering ever since. I felt so lost. In January of this year I discovered blogs (yours, Miss Mustard Seed, and a host of others). Along with these blogs came inspiration and lots of it. I started my own blog, I’ve been repurposing just about everything I can get my hands on, and just this month, I rented a booth in a local shop to sell my repurposed items. It’s people like you, who paved this road before me, who inspire me the most.

  52. Oh mannnnnn, I am inspired by so many great bloggers (including you and Marian). I just want to be a little bit like ya’ll when I grow up! I’d luv luv luv to win a copy of Marian’s book. I’d be bouncing off the ceilings! Thank you so much for the opportunity.

  54. Dear Gina, Good books and good blogs inspire me. I’m so delighted that you have a mobile home that is beautiful! That’s encouraging to me.

    Blessings!

  55. Your blog and others show me how to go outside my comfort zone and try things. Even if I fail, I at least learned something. Thanks for that.

  56. What inspires me the most is finding creative ways to tell my family & friends how special they are; or finding creative ways to encompass what is special to them. I literally get lost and lose all track of time making that special keepsake.

  57. Eye candy of all kinds. Blogs, Pinterest and websites such as One Kings Lane and Joss & Main. Also bloggers such as Marian who has helped me step up my game tremendously and you for making me feel like I can make things pretty on a low budget. Love all of it!

    Jenny

  58. I’m inspired by so much a good book, travel, good food, art, house, decorating, fashion, I just discovered pinterest yes, I know I just never had time or interest but now I get it. Blogs and that community is just so wonderful that too is somewhat of a new thing. Life is grand.

  65. I have gotten my inspiration from the blogs I and diy magazines I read. When my husband lost his job, it was a blog I read that got me started selling on ebay, which got us through the tough times. Now I am having fun with updating several rooms in our home using ideas from my blogs. THANKS!

  66. I am inspired by blogs like yours and MMS and Donna from Funky Junk and from blogland in general and especially from my friend Rhonda from Down to Earth blog whose book I purchased earlier this year. I intend to get Marion’s book as well. I know that I am not eligible for this draw but just wanted to say how much I love your blog and your approach to life in general.

    Cheers from Australia, Karen.

  67. Blogs inspire me daily. Thanks for the chance to win.

  68. Eek would love to win! I would say these days my inspiration mainly comes from Pinterest.

  69. Oh this book looks like a must have!
As for what inspires me, bloggers that make something out of nothing on very small budgets, so I know I can do it too!

  70. I’ve been eyeing this book since MMS first spoke of it. I get inspiration from all over …. magazines, blogs, shopping, friends & family.

  71. I’m inspired by magazines and books (I’ve got a bad magazine habit!) and by the lovely blogs I’ve discovered this summer. We are in the process of redoing the “man cave” (a wonderful 500 sq. foot room off our kitchen) and laying new flooring in the living room and kitchen. I’d love the new book to help with decorating these areas!

  72. I am so very inspired by the diy/decor blogs I read, including yours and MMS!

  73. I am inspired by all the wonderful things I see and hear about–bloggers, of course, sharing their creativity and talents, and people who are working to help others, such as firefighters, teachers, military, law enforcement, medical people, ministers, etc. With the aftermath of Sandy, there are a million stories that inspire and give hope. I guess the bottom line is that it is people, of all kinds, who inspire me, people who share, whether it is the work of their hands, or the love in their hearts.

  74. Looking im magazines and of course pintrest!

    Nicole22654@yahoo.com

  75. My kids and things I see around me inspires me! Thanks!
    saltsnmore at yahoo dot com

  76. I am inspired by many things & people, with Marian being one of those. Nature inspires me the most although I don’t always notice it’s beauty right away or the harmony in which it works.

  77. I am inspired by my children. I am still a mother with young children and love to create based on the needs and wants of my children and husband. I am also inspired by the seasons and weather of the day-weird, but true!

  78. Beautiful gardens have always inspired me. They calm me and cause me to reflect on color, order and design. I found your blog through MMS and you both should be proud for having inspired so many people.

  79. Many things inspire me. One thing though is when I see someone else create I think, “They did it…I can too.”

  80. I see inspiration in everything around me. I see it in magazine ads, and on the beautiful blogs I love so much. It may be a color or a texture, it could be in a store window or even an old broken window. My problem is actually keeping focused on one thing long enough to finish it! What a GREAT Giveaway, I would so love to win her book! Thanks for the chance!
    Crafty Hugs,
    Pendra

  81. I am inspired by the many blogs I read, especially those with tutorials on how to create a knock-off on the cheap!! Thanks for the give-a-way.
