Of course, when you're trying new paint, you've gotta have something to actually put the paint on. I knew from her wonderful tutorials that the intended look is to revive an old piece of furniture that's worn in a bad way into something chippy and worn in a good way. I found this side table at Goodwill for $5. Score! And happily enough, I needed a new side table for my living room. Win/Win.
The instructions for the paint say that if you mix in bonding agent it will help it adhere to the furniture with no sanding. Sah-weet! I cleaned up the table (and removed the price tags, of course), then went to mixing up my paint. I went by the directions on the packages to make sure that it was mixed properly.
I will forewarn you... it takes a while to mix the powder into the water. Like at least 5 minutes. Just when you think your arm is about to fall off it will be ready, but I promise all that extra work is well worth it. The paint goes on pretty thin, and my table took about 3 coats. It's unlike any other paint that I've used, but I really, really love the results. {This color is Ironstone.}
It sands off beautifully where you want to distress it, but the bonding agent makes it adhere pretty well, so if you give it several coats you're probably not going to get it back off again.
On the main flat surface, I only used two coats and I was able to get some of the chippy look that I wanted. Once I was happy, then I sealed it with her wax. That stuff is like butter. Seriously, seriously good stuff. It's my favorite part of her new line (although it's all amazing stuff.)
I love, love, love how my table turned out. It took no more or less time to paint than any other paint. but the look is just different in a way that's kind of hard to show in photos. After you sand it all down and get it waxed, it's the smoothest paint finish I've ever done. I just wanted to rub it over and over because it was soooo smooth.
I'm *this* close to finishing my living room, and I can't wait to share it with you during my stop on the Jennifer Rizzo Holiday Housewalk this Wednesday! Now I gotta go finish fluffing so I can be ready to strut my stuff :)

The table came out great. I haven't tried the milk paint yet - it's on my to do list.
ReplyDeleteYour table looks great but what is the result if you just want a solid paint job and not a chippy or distressed look? Does the paint hold up in those cases or does it chip off easily if bumped?
ReplyDeleteI love when you tell us how a product works and show the outcome on a piece! Thank you-Can't wait to see the tour!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing...it turned out wonderful. I will be attempting to do my coffee table soon!
ReplyDeleteVery nice Gina..I can't wait to see your living room..
ReplyDeleteI love your table! I haven`t tried milk paint but hope to one day. I see so many tremendous results with it.
ReplyDeleteDebbie :)
It looks really nice. I have not tried it yet. Back in the 70's milk paint was all the rage, too, and I painted several pieces with it. It was usually put on raw wood and sunk right in and could not be taken off- Love your piece- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI love that look! Very nice work, Gina! I used to paint with milk paint in the 70's also.
ReplyDeleteI have never tried Milk Paint but it has my interest and I would love to try it! I don't know which look I like better, the really chippy look or the lovely smooth waxed and slightly distressed look I have seen on some pieces. Your table came out great especially for your first time, can't wait to see the finished room!
ReplyDeleteGreat job, such an improvement. It is such fun to pick up a thrifted piece and make into something pretty and useful.
ReplyDeleteLove the new look of your table. I don't know this "milk paint".... do you think I can find it in Italy too?
