why I didn’t resolve to lose weight

I’ve been kinda scared to talk about losing weight here, because that’s not why you visit. I mean, it’s January, and you’re already bombarded with every other person you know talking about it on Facebook & Twitter & well… pretty much everywhere! Last weekend, I shared via Instagram that I had to buy new jeans – three sizes smaller than my old ones. Immediately I started getting questions about if I was losing weight. When I said I’d lost nearly 40 pounds, I got even more questions. So, I thought I’d share how I’ve changed my life a little and it got me into smaller jeans.

First things first: my weight loss wasn’t a resolution that popped up when the calendar flipped. I actually started before Thanksgiving, and didn’t even tell my husband I was doing if for the first 2 weeks. I didn’t start some radical new weight loss plan. I’m not taking a magic pill. It pretty much boils down to two things….

eating croissants & playing games. Ok…ok…ok… it’s really more about eating & moving.

What I eat is real, amazing food. I have much smaller portions than I did before, but I eat food that’s so good it looks like it came from some famous French bistro. I take the time to actually enjoy it – slowing down the pace. Eating shouldn’t be a race – I slowed down to enjoy every. single. bite. Doing that led to me eating much, much less and being satisfied longer between meals. I prepare 99% of the meals that I eat, which is turning me into something I never thought I would be: a foodie.

Going on a diet never worked for me. Seriously – I never stick with it more than 2 weeks, and then I end up gaining it all back. I’m not dieting, I’ve altered my eating, and plan on eating this way for the rest of my life. Since I’m heading towards 3 months into it, my only regret is that I didn’t do this sooner.

Now let’s talk about moving. I’m addicted to Just Dance, partly because it’s fun, but even more because it’s 2-3 hours a day that I get to spend just being goofy with my girls. What’s better than dancing & laughing & having fun – with a bonus of losing weight?

So that’s my big secret. Not really a secret, huh? Eat less, move more. The big thing was I learned how to eat things and how to move more, both which make me ridiculously happy. And fitting into smaller jeans, well that’s just icing on the proverbial cake :)

What does this mean for my blog? Well, it’s not turning into my weight loss journal (though you can follow @ShabbyCreek on Instagram if you want to cheer me on.) I may be posting a few more recipes, but y’all seem to be liking those, anyway :) Other than that, not a thing. Except I might actually get more DIY done, because I have WAY more energy now. Just wanted to share my story with you.

Hope you’re having a great weekend!

  1. Good for you! Congrats! That’s funny because I do just dance 4 for my work out!!!!

  2. Good for you! Congrats on your process. I’m trying to do something like this myself – keep it fun and simple! :)

  3. You go girl! I love Just Dance on the Wii too, it’s fun to do with my kids although some of the songs on Just Dance 3 are not kid appropriate in my opinion. And sharing recipes on the blog is just an added bonus. Everyone likes food, right? :) Are you going to Haven this year?

  4. good for you!!! I hear you not wanting to share at first because of everyone’s new year resolutions..frankly it drives me bananas why people think they must start losing weight because of resolutions than doing it because they truly want to. congrats to three sizes down! :)

  5. I decided two years ago, not to diet, but just to get healthy. What a difference the two things are, as you and I have discovered! Congratulations on your progress; being healthy is soooo awesome!

  6. Congrats ! It’s not easy, I’m going the same thing! Always love to see a recipe :)

  7. Good work Gina…I feel exactly the same way about the changes I’ve made too. Not a diet…just something different, something that is healthier. I love our wii….getting lots of calories burned while we play. I’m down 25 and I’d love to take off another 25…but I’m just taking it one day at a time and loving how the changes have changed me! xoxo love from muskoka

  9. That’s fantastic. It took me a long time to realize that a diet was never going to work for me and that I actually had to change the way I eat and be healthy…super big plus when you find an exercise you love. Congrats!

  10. Woo! Hoo! Congratulations on your progress so far! Don’t you feel like a new person? I lost 30 pounds a couple years ago and could not believe the difference in the way I felt….and looked! I am on the quest now to lose some more….by eating healthier and walking every day (almost). I would love for you to share more recipes…and once again, I love your blog!

  11. Good for you, Gina! :) I know exactly what you mean—my husband was trying to get “us” to start some insane workout program P90X or something like that and I knew exactly what would happen. I’d try it once or twice, get frustrated, and quit. Instead, I started cutting back on caffeine/sodas, etc. I don’t know that I’ve lost any weight, but I feel a little better. It’s baby steps for me.

    You look great. :)

  12. Way to go, Gina! You are more likely to keep these changes as part of you life and not just some diet or resolution. Keep it up!

  13. Way to go! I’m in the same boat. I’d love for you to share an occasional recipe and update.

  14. That’s so cool! I love your attitude about it..how it’s not a diet but way of life now. Congratulations on your new you!

  15. Wahoo! Way to go! Exciting for you!

  16. I love this!!

  18. So inspiring! I’ve struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t actively trying to lose weight or saying “screw it” and eating with wild abandon. And I’m just DONE. So this is the year of cooking healthy food because it’s better for my boys and moving more because it’s healthy for me. I look forward to following your journey on insta!

  19. Way to go, Gina! I’m so glad you found something that works for you. I also don’t like making weight loss resoloutions because when it comes down to it its really about making lifestyle changes for a better you, not just because its January 1st. I will continue to follow your progress on instagram and am rooting for you. :)

  20. Gina,
I am so inspired by your post. I once had a weight loss blog and I understand how hard it is to put it ALL out there. Hearing your attitude about health and not diet shows that you are on the road to success. I am rooting for and with you, as I’m in the same boat to drop some poundage!
Congrats on your success so far and I can’t wait to see more of your success!

  21. Congrats gina! I am know how hard it is and to want it so bad. I am so proud of you! I am trying as well. I told my hubby back at Christmas I wanted to get some Just Dance games and he laughed at me but now I am going out and getting one for sure! Again congrats!

  22. Great job Gina!

Please stop by my son’s blog and share your story. He’s hosting a year long program for people to come by, lose weight and share their diet tips. We’d love you to come over and share this story with our readers.

  28. That’s awesome Gina! I’m so proud of you! It’s so hard to get started. I’ve been saying “tomorrow…” for three years as the weight keeps packing on and the energy keeps going down hill. Ugh! I need to build up enough courage post something like this on my blog as an incentive. Thanks for sharing!! Rock on girlfriend!!

  29. Congratulations!! I think this is the wisest, healthiest way of all. I try to eat a healthy diet and making more conscious decisions now. I need to get moving more and you’ve encouraged me! Thanks so much for sharing…I know many will appreciate it.

  30. Congratulations on your one-step-at-a-time road to better health!!! It is the little things that will make the big differences. Keep your food simple and tasteful and I’m glad to hear that you are having fun with your kids along the way.

  31. Way to go! It’s amazing what just some simple changes can do! I’ve started eating much healthier & moving more and I’m down 6 pounds already! We LOVE Just Dance too!! So fun! :)

  32. Good for you, this is awesome:)!!

  33. congrats and GOOD for YOU!!!!!!

  34. You go girl, it is all about being happy with who you are! Keep up the amazing journey one smile at a time!

  35. Way to go!

  36. You’re beautiful inside AND out, Gina. And such an inspiration! :)

  37. I throw my good wishes in with everyone else and agree with Michele, you are truly beautiful! I’ve done the same thing, just quit eating heavy stuff as a lifestyle and switched. I still treat myself once in a while but I’ve found that my body just doesn’t crave the burgers and pizza anymore! Love your blogs and style, thanks so much for sharing it all!

  38. I am SO proud of you!!!! You are a beautiful woman. You deserve an energetic body. You go, girl!!!!!!

  39. Gina, I’m so happy and proud of you for doing this. You are doing everything in such a healthy way—keep it up and good luck!

  40. Congratulations! I’m so happy for you!

  41. So proud of you dah-ling! I can’t wait to see you in person and give you a big ‘ole hug!!!

  42. Good for you! So glad that you did share your success. I am so happy that you are full of my energy and losing weight the smart way.

  43. That is so wonderful, Gina! My hubby and I started following a low-carb way of eating (won’t call it a diet because that says temporary to me). We have and continue to lose weight and inches, and we are eating regular food. We feel great as I’m sure you do, too! Continued good luck to you!

  44. We are more then just diy though and I am so happy you shared! Good for you. That has to feel wonderful!! Yay YOU :) I’ve been up, and I’ve been down, and I know how hard it can be. Really happy for you :)

  45. You go, Gina! It was brave to share, but you are being so smart about what you’re doing. I’m struggling with some extra weight right now, too, and I’m following your plan. Real food, not too much, and moving regularly. Best wishes!

  46. Congratulations, Gina! Good for you! I don’t do sugar or white flour anymore and the difference is amazing. Isn’t it a wonderful feeling to be buying down a size instead of up a size…or 2….or 3. God bless you- Your kids will really benefit as much as you do! xo Diana

  47. So fantastic! If only everyone realized it really is that simple: eat less and love more! I’m doing that too, and another thing that I’m hoping will help is overcoming my addiction to Coca cola. Just switching to water reduced my caloric intake by hundreds a day.
Keep up the good work and we will both be sporting new bodies come spring!

  48. You’ll be successful because you have made healthy changes instead of going on a “diet”!! I’m only 5 ft. tall and I’ve gone from 205 to 110 in the past 13 months. Size 22 pants to size 4. I look and feel 20 years younger!! No more high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Healthy eating and regular exercise is the way to go!!

    Keep up the good work!!

  49. Thanks for sharing, and for reminding us what the amazing weight loss secret is (simply eating less and moving more). I’ve been eating more and moving less, so I needed the gentle reminder that it’s time to switch those back around. Congrats on losing 40 pounds – that’s freaking amazing, great job!

  50. you’re beautiful AND amazing! xoxo

  51. Such an inspiring post with a sensible attitude toward weight loss as a healthy lifestyle choice! I’m cheering you on and we all would love you to share your recipes.

  52. Congratulations on your progress, Gina! You look great! Thanks so much for inspiring and sharing all you do!

  53. Big Congrats to you!

  54. Well, good on ya! That’s fabulous! Diets do work for me, but not for long…about 3 months and then I get tired of chicken breast! I’m trying to make changes, too instead of diet. Wish me luck!

  55. Gina, this is so awesome!

I’m so happy for you! I saw you IG post about needing to buy smaller jeans & I knew you must be moving & “agroovin” congrats!

  56. My grandson has been out “Robot Dance”ing us for two years now, since he was 3. Anyone who can do Just Dance not only knows how to have fun, they deserve to be rewarded with weight loss – that takes coordination!

    YOU GO!!!

    Bliss

  57. So happy for you!Eating healthy is the best! You feel good on the inside and out! UGH working out is something I don’t enjoy LOL!But I too need to get moving. Not to lose weight just to get into shape. When you get into your mid 40′s like me :-) you need to get moving.Things start to hurt a little more when you are using it.I like just dance now they have just dance 4 or is it five I don’t know that you can use as a work out.I think I may try that just hope I don’t hurt myself LOL.I gave myself tennis elbow from playing wii bowling!

  58. Congratulations Gina! I’m so happy for you, happy you are happy! And it sure sounds like a healthier way to go about it, too.
    Debbie :)

  59. Wow, I am impressed..Good for you ! Its a hard battle, and I’ve been battling for most of my life. I haven’t given up though, and you’ve given me inspiration to try, yet again. I have a lot to lose – close to 80 lbs……any words of wisdom will help !!

  60. WAY TO GO! By the way..I’m coming over to borrow that skirt LOL. Love the hair too..curly is your thing.

  61. Way to go girl! It’s hard to change a way of life and that what weight loss is. I lost 80lbs, but the hard way… I got sick. I still find it hard to keep the weight off and to be honest I did put about 15 lbs back on that I notice in the way my hips and knees start that familiar ache. I’m still no skinny, little thing by ANY means, but I too find I have more energy and just feel better. Congrats!!!!!!!! Oh, and I always love a good recipe from time to time!!!
    Hugs,
    Pendra

  62. That’s so awesome Gina!! Good for you!! Hope you have a great week! :) Claire

  63. Good for you, Gina! We love Just Dance. My girls and I play it together, and I just bought a Zumba game that’s similar to JD. It’s nice to do it in the comfort of my own home since apparently I’m not very “coordinated”. lol

    Aloha,
    Charlie

  64. Congrats Gina. I’ve been Just Dancing with my daughter and we’ve had always a blast!

  65. So happy for you!!! You have totally inspired me to do the same. Thank you!!!

  66. Awesome news Gina..After all of the great things that you do for everyone else it is good to hear that you are doing something so good for yourself..Also I think you were so brave to start before the holidays!!..3 sizes..I would be jumping up and down and dancing without any music..lol..Take it one day at a time pretty lady and soon it will be second nature and you won’t have to even think about what you are doing..Go Girl !!

  67. Congratulations, Gina! You are such an inspiration! I fell off the wagon last year when I let life take over and I stopped taking care of myself (again). However, I’ve jumped back on and feel that this year will see big (pardon the pun) changes! :)

  68. I’m so happy for you! I need to do that myself and your just might be my motivation, thanks.

    Kim

  69. I’m so happy for you! I need to do the same thing for myself, and I think you have been just the motivation I needed. Thank you for your story.

    Kim

  70. Another bonus…you look younger! I’ve only ever seen your photo on your home page and I never gave any thought to your age but when I saw this pictue, before I even read what the post was about, I thought…she looks a lot younger here than her homepage picture! So yay! Another bonus:) Good for you for being awesome!

  71. Please please share what you do when you are bored and want to eat, or are starving and want to pig out. I’d also love to hear what snacks you’re eating that satisfy. Thank you.

  72. Way to go!
Do you eat vegetables and salad too? I know that food group makes you feel more full than anything. Being a vegetarian myself, I know a thing or to about healthy eating.

  73. Way to go! I’m glad you found a unique way to lose weight.
Do you eat vegetables and salads? That food group makes you feel more full than any food group (that and fruits and grains). Being a vegetarian myself, I know a thing or to about healthy eating habits.

  74. Congrats, that’s wonderful! I started on a similar journey last year and started a separate blog for it but then fell off the grid for my crafting blog. I think I’ve finally found the balance to put the two together.

  75. Marisa Ruffolo says:

I’m just going through your website for the first time and I came across this article. I say “good for you” and you are doing it the right way. I did the very same thing and lost over 100 lbs. The truth is, you may have times when you slide back–I started working full time after 16 years of being a stay-at-home homeschooling mom, and I ended up putting 50 lbs back on. It was very disheartening; but, things have leveled out again, and I’m learning how to manage my time. It helps if you have a wonderfully supportive spouse (which I do-going on 22 years of marriage) or, at least, a great friend to talk you through the rough times. I’m really happy for you! I hope you enjoy this journey you’re on! Don’t sweat the small slide backs, just get back on the horse again whenever you can. I am so totally in your corner and rooting for you all the way! YOU GO GIRL!
