Coming clean: the ugly truth about painted floors

Here’s a not so secret fact about me: I’m a horrible housekeeper. Seriously. My floors don’t get mopped near enough, windows rarely get washed, and have I ever mentioned that the only reason we have clean laundry is thanks to Mr. SCC? Yeah, I’m not so great at cleaning. So when HomeRight asked me if I’d like to test a SteamMachine, I was a little worried.

I mean, y’all know me… and y’all know that I’m not going to voluntarily clean. But, then I remembered my sad looking painted porch, so I agreed to try it.

Here’s the ugly truth about my beloved aqua paint: During the summer, I clean it every day – and I actually like doing it! It’s cool and refreshing and almost like playing in a wade pool. I get out there and spray it down and clean it up without a whimper.  After a long, wet, icky winter-ish (because living in the south means you get like 4 snowflakes all season) – that pretty porch ain’t so pretty.

See all that grime? Remember this is a judgement-free zone, m’kay? The mess above was dirt that was ground into the paint. I actually mopped it just the day before because I couldn’t bare to stress y’all out with the full throttle mess of it all. You’re welcome.

I knew that if the SteamMachine could handle that mess, then it could absolutely, positively, without a doubt handle anything. Yeah, it was that bad!

And, with a little fear that it couldn’t handle my mess, I tried it. And it worked. Be glad you didn’t show up to my house later that day, or I would have bragged all about my clean porch. I was blown away at how well the SteamMachine worked. Ask my family :)

About an hour later, I had a clean porch. That image above is not Photoshopped. It’s the real deal, yo!
After the fabulous results on the porch, I steam cleaned everything in sight… windows, doors, walls, I even threatened the cat. If it stood still and I thought it could take the heat, it got steamed. {It also removes wallpaper, but I don’t have any wallpaper to remove, so I missed the boat on trying that.}  I almost became a clean freak…. almost. Then I took a break and got over it.

Legal: HomeRight.com provided me with a SteamMachine for review purposes. All words, ideas and opinions are my own.

  2. Gina,
I have a similar industrial steam machine, and love it. It will blast even tough grease from a grill. Your floors look lovely and it is so fun to use. Glad you are enjoying all your cleaning:)

  3. MY KITCHEN FLOORS! And as a side note, steam is the most effective way to kill bed bugs. I speak from experience on that one.

  4. If I won, the first thing I would clean would be my bath room tile.

  5. My kitchen floors I’m pretty sure they haven’t been cleaned since 2011!

  6. Well you had me at “removes wallpaper” . : )

  7. My kitchen floors! Thank goodness they are wood and don’t show the dirt but they are a mess! Thanks for the chance!

  12. I have stained concrete and they hide so much, I am afraid to see how dirty they may be! For the sake of my family, they could use a steam!

  13. I would clean my deck–if it did that well on your painted floor, I think it could do just as well on my deck.

  16. Where to start. I also do not clean like I should but I think I would start with the living room carpet. We have toddlers and we are nearing the end of potty training I hope. Lets just say it hasn’t been an accident free time in our lives. I am so tired of scrubbing in carpet cleaner.

  17. My bathroom. Thanks

  18. Are you sure I didn’t write this post? At least the part about being an overly-relaxed housekeeper and having a grungy porch? I intended to clean the porch LAST spring, but it never happened. So now it is so dirty (along with all the railings,) that I may just have to move out-of-state.

  19. My entire mobile home! I moved my family of 6 from a nice urban home to country living and squeezed them into a two bedroom trailer. Four years later, I still didn’t get the house built and we have now moved back to the city to take on a new career opportunity. The property (and abused trailer) remains in our possession. Yippie! Problem…after hating the trailer all these years, I’m now faced with polishing it up and keeping it as my getaway. Oh my. What a challenge!

  20. I would first squel with delight if Iwon….then clean all my floors and then begone floral wall paper border!!!

  21. Oh my gosh, so much to clean!! LOL Kitchen floor, bathroom floor, kitchen wallpaper, screened porch framing… :) Would love to win!

  50. So…steam cleaning the cat isn’t an option?? Well if that’s the case, then I’d start with my sliding glass doors. And then my windows. And then my floors. And then my furniture…and then…

    kgran0418@gmail.com

  51. First I would take off the peeling funky 16 year old wallpaper in the dining room and hall. And then clean my hubby’s sneakers. And then the dog bowl holder. And then where it drips down between the stove and the counter. And then ..

  53. I’d clean the bathroom tile. Then I’d steam the wallpaper off the bedroom and never hand another strip……lol.

  54. The floors! We have a painted floor in our laundry room~it’s looking a little grubby. And the kids bathroom floor. It’s a lot grubby looking, even after mopping.

  55. What would I use it on first? These horrible tile floors with WHITE grout! :)

Can you tell I am swooning? LOL

  63. I would clean my massive amount of tile floor!!!

  64. It would be hard to pass up any surface that can take the heat. We are moving and need to clean the carpets, so I would start there. I would then head to our upholstered headboard and foot board because I haven’t been able to figure out how to clean those until now. BRILLIANT!

  65. Would definitely clean the kitchen and bathroom floors.

  66. I’ve had a steamer for years, but would love a new one, as mine in wearing out! I’ve used it too clean grout in the kitchen tile floors, it’s great for getting soap scum off the shower, but use it most for cleaning the tile floors. Thanks for a chance to win.

One is only 3 weeks old so she doesn’t know how disgusting her Dad, Uncle and Grandpa are yet. Please pick me, so need it. Tired of cleaning on my hands and knees.

  87. I’d attack my kitchen floors that never seem to stay clean! I swear that when I mop there is a beacon sent out to drop juice on the floor or track mud in the house!

  88. Our kitchen floors have to be mopped daily for some reason, so that would be first, but we have no carpet in our house, so the real answer is “EVERYTHING!”

  93. Well, I would most likely leave my poor 17 y/o old cat alone….although I’m sure she could probably use a little cleaning being so ancient (vintage?). And my dog would probably enjoy a little spa day with that sweet machine….but I would most definitely use it on my tiled kitchen floor – which I hate, but have to live with. Maybe if it was a little (ok…alot) cleaner, I may like it a little better. lol

Thanks for this great giveaway, Gina! :)

  150. Please pick me… I’ve got a 2 story foyer with 2 layers of wallpaper that needs to be removed!! Seriously, I just did a post about it a couple of days ago…go look at my site: pendrasplace.blogspot.com We’ve just bought a house and it has woodgrain tiles on the whole lower level that needs to be cleaned… all 2400 sq. ft. of it! I’d rather be crafting, sewing or decorating, in other words, I REALLY need this and I think I’d use it…everywhere!!
    Hugs,
    Pendra

  161. I would clean my back splash tiles in the kitchen first and then I would try to remove wall paper in my bathroom!!! Window washing would be so cool to try too!!! <3

  162. The first place I would clean would be my bathroom floors! The previous owners installed a rough, slate-like tile that is so difficult to clean – I long for the day we replace them. Until then, this steam cleaner would be fantastic!

  163. I would clean my parents tile floors. I clean for them at least monthly. They live in a house we purchased when ours burned and was being rebuilt. My mom is unable to do the mopping and cleaning in depth any more and the grout lines are especially dingy in the kitchen and baths. I have used various products and so far none have given me the satisfactory results I am seeking. I just don’t have the time to scrub them with a toothbursh each month with caring for my parents and my family. I would then proceed to clean my tile and hardwood floors and area rugs at my house and my parents. Thanks for the demo….would love to try it out! Blessings!

  170. Okay . . . I don’t only want this steam machine . . . I need it! Seriously, living in the Pacific N.W., we get day after day of gray mistiness. I walked out onto my upper deck yesterday to shake out a rug (yes, I was cleaning instead of crafting!) and noticed that the deck was GREEN! GREEN MOLD! Yuck! I think I am living in serious danger everytime I walk on that deck and track the mold spores back into my house. Yes! I NEED a steam machine for sure. Patti@OldThingsNew

  171. BTW, I pinned it too! Patti@OldThingsNew

  173. I would clean all of my tiles floors. The grout gets disgusting! Especially with a Saint Bernard in the house!

  174. I’d start with my Mum’s carpets, but then I’d do the bathrooms, lino floors, the windows (especially the sliding glass doors) and the oven. I borrowed one from a friend when I moved out of my apt. last summer and they ARE wonderful! Even did my frig. They are so fast and easy to use, too. Thanks for the chance to win. ~ Linne

  179. My kitchen and bathroom tile floors! I HATE to mop! They get pretty bad and then once every few months, I’ll give in and get own there and scrub them with a brush. Yuck!

  180. Bathroom and kitchen tile floors need it first! Then the sunroom. I would love this!!!

  181. I have a steam cleaner for just floors, but have been wanting one that will do everything like this one! Oh wow, the oven especially, I can’t get that cleaned right for the life of me! And the black in the sliding door grooves? How am I suppose to get them perfect again? Yes, this would be a wonderful cleaning tool.
    Debbie :)

  182. I would clean my bathroom tile floors. I can’t find anything that will get them clean. Then I would remove the wallpaper in my upstairs bathroom. Been wanting to do that, just haven’t had the energy! Sounds like a great machine.

  183. I would clean my kitchen floor first! This would be amazing!

  184. I’ve got a rug in my den and some bathroom tiles that’s got the SteamMachine’s name written all over them! Hope a win it! Thanks for the chance!

  185. I would steam mop my bare kitchen floors so that I can paint it. Has not been mopped since I pulled the tile out about ten years ago. I have a piece of rug to cover the ugly floor.

  186. The first thing I would steam is my laundry room. The back door of my small house opens right up to it and it always gets dirt, leaves, anything that can come in from the outside. I have hard wood floors so this would work great on them as also on the area rugs I have on them. I would let my niece borrow it (maybe) since she has 3 children that gets dirt everywhere since 2 of them are boys. Looks like a great machine.

  188. I have a house full of big windows, hardwood floors, several rooms with very thick carpets, a really dirty dog, and a greasy, grimy husband. I would steam clean everything.

  189. Wow! That steamer works great! I am a HORRIBLE housekeeper! No kids, but two dogs that are constantly tracking in mud and crud, and I can’t keep up. They enter through an old concrete floored porch and that dirt is ground into the painted finish. I would use the steamer there first, then move to the kitchen and on to the rest of the house! Maybe with this thing I could keep up!

  190. Gina, you smart thing. We’re going to repin this to our board :)

  191. Definitely the floors, two pooches like to keep the dirty!

  192. Ugh….my kitchen floor!

  193. I woild do every surface in my my shabby gettin’ chic mobile homeI just moved into in Tampa Florida Country. Lots to do! The BEST to Everyone!

  194. I’d clean my front porch first!

  195. I’d clean the tile floors in our kitchen, and our powder room, and our master bath, and…

  196. The doors and cabinets in our house!

  197. I would love to try this out on my kitchen floors – they need it!!!

  198. With three males in the house I am definitely cleaning the bathroom first!

  199. The kitchen floor! or the bathroom floor!

  202. Bathroom floor tiles!

  203. I would clean my tile floors first – no doubt!

  204. My kitchen floors need a good cleaning. Great giveaway.

  205. I would clean the mud room/pantry floor. White tile with grout and lots of traffic. Would love this. By the way, I love your blog. Throughmyporchwindow.blogspot.com

  206. My floors, which are, sad to say, a little grungy. Thanks for the opportunity.

  207. My tile floors!

  208. I would clean my kitchen floor first and then make my way to the bathroom floors. Cleaning might actually become fun!!!!

  209. Haha I’m 56, hubs is 61. We just took bought a 1956 home that has never been touched. We’re doing the majority of the work all by ourselves and working full time on a shoestring budget. SO? First thing I’d clean is the entire kitchen~! I mean from top to bottom. Since we have to live in the home while we do the work. That kitchen clean is a MUST! That steamer would surely come in handy!
    Thank you for the chance!

  210. I would clean our bathrooms! We are renting and they make me cringe!

  212. I would first attack the toilets, then the grout. Can’t stand the sight of it all.

  213. my kitchen and hall floors. The salt on sidewalks comes in your house no matter what you do

  214. I need to clean my tile floors in all my bathrooms and then go to work on the UGLY wallpaper in my main floor bathroom. I would love one of these!! :)

  215. The first thing I would clean would be the kitchen floors! ( And by “I” I mean my husband- I never clean!)

  216. I would love to try this. Maybe I could become a neat freak…lol….probably not happening!

  217. I want one so bad! I would start with the bathrooms, then the laundry room, then the kitchen. Infact I think I would go through my entire house with that thing!

  218. I believe I would start in my bathrooms. I would love to have them steam cleaned clean! Also I never thought about how they would be great for windows – would love to try that! Thanks for the chance to win one.

  219. I jsut brought in my 95# black lab from outside to inside, I would definately clean my laminate flooring, he slobbers constantly!!!!!!!!!!

  222. I’d clean my kitchen floors. The previous owners left gaps between their hardwood floor job thatgross me out!

  223. I’d start with the kitchen and clean all the hardwood floors…Then I’d tackle the bathrooms and mudroom…This would be AWESOME to have!

  224. Entry for Linda L

  225. I would clean my floors. Most of the house is tile, and always dirty.

  226. Well Mercy! If it does that I would have to get it into my living room on the tile where the daughter and her boyfriend run in and out all the time, then the kitchen… bathroom… I just might become a cleanfreak myself.

  227. Would steam clean my floor they have taken a beating this winter. Between potty training our youngest and the stomach virus they need a good old steam cleaning.

  228. Gosh..where would I start?? I guess the floors would be a good place! They could sure use it. With 2 dogs and 3 cats, plus, all the wear, tear and dirt of people’s feet tracking in ‘stuff’ from the horses and chickens….you get the picture!!!

  229. The entire house bathroom, kitchen and floors. between potty training our youngest and stomach viruses i feel like every surface needs a good steaming.

  230. I pinned it! here’s the link

  231. Bathoom floors

  232. Oh the carpet for sure. I have dogs. Would love to see if it would work on their stains because nothing else has worked. Cheers

  233. OMG, I would definitely use it to take down the wallpaper in my kitchen. What was I thinking when I put it up? LOL. My windows could sure use a good cleaning also.

  234. Oh my gosh, would start at church on the tile grout and then our windows and bathrooms! Of course would blog about it all the way:))

  235. I would clean my bathrooms. I don’t ever feel like i get them clean enough!

  236. My kitchen desperately needs this. I have a Boston Terrier and a mixed rescue dog that is well over 60lbs. They are constantly keeping me busy mopping. Mopping never seems to do the trick. The floor always seems gritty. Creeps me out!

  238. I would have my husband try it out on all the floors including the front porch!

  239. I, too, am a horrible house cleaner. Since my tile floors are in desperate need of cleaning, I would do the kitchen first. Then, I would move onto the sun room, then the bathrooms. Maybe even the windows. When I use the Swiffer, it often leaves streaks or a haze. I switched and actually now mop with a two bucket method of floor cleaner/water in one and vinegar/water to rinse. It takes forever, but the floors are clean. But, I must admit, this does not happen as often as it should. Perhaps a steam cleaner would give great results in a shorter amount of time and I would be more inclined to clean the floors more often. Are you finding you are mopping more often as a result?

  240. I would do the bathroom floors. Keep them REALLY clean!

  241. We just bought our first home together =D
It has wood floors though-out.(two stories) And of course I will have to clean the entire space which is 2280 square feet, BEFORE we move in!! :P
With all the expenses of moving, we cant afford to purchase anything else.

Winning this steam machine would be SUCH A BLESSING!

  242. I’d clean our floors and shower tiles! Our steamer broke last week after only less than a year and the floors are definitely overdue for a good steaming. I just don’t feel like a regular mop and bucket gets them as clean as steam. I’d love to try the Steam Machine!

  243. Oh, such a wonderful give-a-way! I lost my house and have just recently moved into my Son’s unfinished basement. We have put up walls and a drywall…but the money ran out when it came to flooring so I just have cement floors that are really grungy looking. Does it do upholstery? Chairs need cleaning too! LOL…there is much to clean up after the drywall was put in. Thanks so much for the chance to win! Diane
