Master Bedroom Makeover Reveal

My master bedroom makeover is finally complete! You’ve been so very patient while I finished every little step along the way, but I hope you think the reveal is well worth the wait. It looks so different from before, it’s all light and airy and just my style. I have no idea what style to call it, it’s just me. A little farmhouse, a little cottagey, a few modern touches, and a lot of handmade goodness all around. As with all of my room makeovers, I start by choosing my colors, and then pretty much just go with my gut after that. I gravitate towards what I love and try to walk away from anything that doesn’t make my heart sing. But this room definitely makes my heart sing. Are you ready for the grand tour?

master bedroom makeover

Before we jump in, let’s look at where I started.

master bedroom before

I was comfortable, but not at all my style anymore. Three years ago I was all about some coastal style, but the more I lived with it, the less I liked it. And, that room was just a room that had decor and was filled with leftover bits, because we didn’t really have a budget, but we wanted a room that was somewhat pulled together. This was my attempt at making do.

Glidden Paint

So first I broke out the paint. Out with the blue, in with the white. Ahhh! Picking the right Glidden® paint white was so simple, because they don’t have 15 million options, only a few perfect shades to choose from. My choice? White on White. It’s a nice white without yellow undertones. It’s one of the best whites ever.

cottage style master bedroom

After I painted it all out, I put in new floors. Dark floors + white walls = the perfect combo.

master bedroom makeover

I have no idea what made me decide to do an emerald, mustard, gray combo, but the colors just work together so well that I’m going with it :)

shabby creek master bedroom

We did install a plank wall behind the bed for the focal wall. Simple 12 inch wide strips of 1/4 inch plywood nailed to the wall with a 1/8 inch gap. Behind the planks I painted the wall Eeyore’s Rain Cloud, a Disney Paint color by Glidden paint; because I wanted the gaps to really pop out. And I didn’t want that blue to show through. A simple 30 minute paint job was all it took to give the plank wall just another layer of perfection. Want a better look at the color? I used the leftover paint to give the nightstands a new coat of the pretty gray.

plank style wall

The ceiling, trim, doors and walls were all painted Glidden paint’s White on White. I like the look of the purely clean slate.

bedroom reading nook

Before the makeover I didn’t have room for a chair in here, but I took out three pieces of furniture that were never used and magically I had room for a reading nook. Love it when that happens.

This is the life canvas

Yeah, that canvas pretty much sums up how I feel about waking up in this room every single day.

Thanks to Glidden paint for partnering with me on this post. I’m so glad they pushed me creatively to make another room come to life in our home.

  1. I have a huge kitchen wall I would love to paint. Really love the curtains you made for this room. I need new living room curtains & can’t find anything I like. After seeing yours, I’m thinking I might just make some.

  2. Beautiful bedroom. Our kitchen is going to be white, dark wood floors, charcoal and aqua. I am loving the combo in your bedroom and can’t wait to see our finished kitchen. Is that quilt from Target? I have had my eye on the dark blue version if so. Do you love it, and how does it wash?

  3. Our living room needs fresh paint. We haven’t touched the walls since we moved in seven years ago.

  4. Beautiful Makeover !!We Moved This Summer And Didn’t Paint Any WalLs Before Moving In.We Are Expecting A Baby In January And Would Really Like To Paint The Master Bedroom And Nursery Before The Baby Comes.

  5. What a beautiful room! I love the color palette, the white on the walls is my new direction. Enjoy it!

  6. oh gina- I bet you are just loving your new master bedroom. so serene and pretty.

  7. Gorgeous room– love the colors, the planked walls…all of it! Can you tell me where you got the barn lights? I haven’t seen ones with a pull-string option before. Thanks!

    • Hey Jessica!
Thank you! They’re outdoor lights we found at Lowe’s, we just added a pull string adapter you can find in the lighting section. You screw it into the bulb socket and it turns any light into a pull string :)

      • Going with the light theme, I’m wanting to do this same thing in my master bedroom, but my husband is saying it’s too tricky! How do you power the lights? Are you guys lucky enough to have plug sockets right by your bed and just ran your power up the wall, or did you do something else to get power there!?

  8. Heidi Still says:

I have a bedroom that was previously my son’s, but is now becoming a guest room. My grandmother will be visiting us for 3 weeks later this fall and I would love to repaint the room for her visit. Take a boys room done in Seahawk Football colors and turn it into something inviting for guests. The White on White sounds like a perfect paint to try. Fresh, light, and inviting.

  9. Love, love, love the new room! My master bedroom is in desperate need of a makeover and painting it would be a perfect starting point. I’ve lived in my house for eight years and it looks exactly the same as the first day we moved in!

  10. I love your make-over. Please let me know where you got the curtains. Thanks much.

  11. It’s perfect! And so pretty.
I’m about to use the same outdoor wall lamps in my bathroom. I have one in my laundry over the sink and I love it.

    Jake’s a Girl

  12. We are getting ready to pain my daughter’s bedroom. It’s still in the jewel tones her older sister painted it. She moved out 5 years ago. ugh!

  13. It looks so pretty and fresh in there now!!

I actually have room(s) that I want to paint! I’ve been toying with the idea of going white for a long time. My house is dark and I would love to add some brightness!

  14. I’d love to win! We recently moved into a new apartment, and have painted almost all the walls except the master bathroom. It’s feeling quite lonely, and could really use some Glidden paint love! :)

  15. Ashley Davis says:

I would love to paint my garage (the only room we didn’t paint when we moved in almost two years ago) light yellow is not such a great color for a man cave, which is what we currently use the garage for!

  16. we would love to paint our rooms upstairs, we boguth a new house and almost finished the downstairs but so much is left!

  17. Looks fantastic Gina!!! Love all the details and the color choices!!! Great job!

  18. First- your room is amazing! I love the colors! Second, my boys bedroom is in desperate need of some paint paint– thank you for this awesome chance!

  19. I have needed to paint my livingroom FOREVER! Maybe a gift card would motivate me!

  20. I sure do – my living room hasn’t been painted in 23 yrs (said with a very red face!) I’m way past ready to paint it again.

  21. I’d like to paint our family room. It would be nice to have an accent wall.

  22. tweet–https://twitter.com/mami2jcn/status/379689160887369728

  23. Very nice. I think I am moving more toward the coastal décor and colors which is different than how we had our house a few years ago. lol. I would like to paint our closet.

  24. I want to paint our living room

  25. Do I have a room???? Yes! I think I’d start with the kitchen!!

  26. I would love to paint the bathroom on the main floor and my entry way needs a new color too:)
    Hope I’m lucky.
    -blessings

  27. I have many rooms I would love to paint but I think I would start with the master bath!

    Blessings, Vicky

  28. i would love to paint my baby’s room but we are renting so i can’t :(

  29. I would love to paint my dining room but I can’t come up with a good color!

  30. Tammy Ruesch says:

Love love love love it. Where did you get your curtains? Im doing my room in teal, red and yellow.I just gotta get my butt in gear and finish.

  31. amy pugmire says:

Yes! I would love to paint my sons room. It is a nude color now but I would love to paint it neon green or navy blue

  32. amy pugmire says:
  33. My craft room is in need of painting! It has a horrible border (thank you previous owners) and I’m thinking of painting it White on White with red-yellow-turquoise accent pieces! ~Marcy

  34. Wow! Beautiful room. My husband and I just bought our first house, so I would be more than grateful to pain any room. But the one room that is in desperate need of a makeover would be the stairwell and hall. We have a double ceiling in our stairwell and it’s painted electric blue.

  35. I am itching to repaint my bathroom. I am thinking of a plum / gray combo!

    Love your makeover, great job!

  36. It looks fantastic!! My boyfriend and I just recently moved into our new home, and it needs some help. You mentioned you did not have a budget… do you have an estimate of how much it cost to complete the entire room???

    • All total, it was around $500, but that included the new floor, which was nearly half of it. The original room (the before version) had basically no budget, so it was a step up, but not by much ;)

  37. Love it :-)
So need to paint master bedroom. It’s been 10 years. Want a bright fun accent wall , have any suggestions?

    • I love a good accent wall! I especially love them in a pattern, like stripes or chevron. I’ve really been leaning towards oranges/yellows a lot lately – would one of those work for you?

  38. Gina,
I love your room. It looks so bright and fresh. Thanks for a chance in the Glidden give away. I always am changing things up and painting. Would love to win this.
    Kris

  39. Pick a room any room. I have so many that need an update. Thanks for the give away.

  40. I am curious to know if the floors in your bedroom are the same pine floors that you installed in others areas of your home, or something different. Your bedroom looks beautiful – but if you can’t tell I am a little obsessed with your pine floors. I so want to try them, but haven’t taken the plunge yet.

    • Yep, they’re the same :) I’m a little obsessed with them, too! We’ll be doing our living room soon…

      • Hi Gina, I would like to do the wood floors the same way you did throughout my house. Where did you buy the wood and is it 1×6 planks? What kind is it? Do you already have a blog on that? Thanks!

        • Gina Luker says:

Yes! We bought them locally at a building supply store – they’re local 1×6 pine (much cheaper than big box stores). In the post there is a link to the DIY floors, so be sure to check it out :)

  43. Carol Sparks says:

If I won the gift card, it would give me an incentive to re-do our son’s room that is how he left it when he went to college in 1999. It is about time to do some redecorating!

  44. We would love to reprint two rooms in our small house. The dining room is cream with cranberry… Blech and the living room is cream with a modern decor ceiling painted. It’s time for a fresh color for sure!

  45. My kitchen is terrible, it has old yellowy wallpaper with green lattice and veggies. I would love to tear it down and give the kitchen a nice coat of paint.

  46. katleen viviano says:

I really need to paint and decorate our bathroom!

  47. My bedroom is a room which never gets any TLC! I have lived in the house for 10+ years and I haven’t made one change to my bedroom in that time! Paint would make a world of difference!!

  48. i wanna paint my room

  49. Oops, posted on the wrong entry. Ironically, I want to paint our master. I loved the medium green (my fav color) at first, but now it seems dark and repressive. Definitely want to go lighter and brighter! I think the change would make my bedding pop.

  50. Love your room!! What is the name of the paint color you used on your dresser??

  51. Wow, this is a really refreshing palette. I would love to redo my master bath, it’s old school dark chocolate brown and light blue and I’m so over it. Ready for a change! .

  52. I’ve painted every room in the house, except my small home office (which is the proverbial tiny third bedroom in a small brick ranch that we’ve cottaged up on the outside), that is painted that apartment rental beige/cream white. It’s boring and I think it effects my creativity! But I’m challenged to choose a color – I think a red (which blue undertones) would be great, but that is sort of a dated look. I don’t want anything too soothing or pastelly. For the rest of my house, it’s quite a mixed bag of colors – my newly updated kitchen (silestone counters and a terra cotta tile floor (laminate but laid like tile with grout, and new appliances in black) is a Tuscan yellow/tangerine. Living rm is a coffee and cream brown – we also painted the ceilings to make the ceilings look higher – it works. One bedroom is a shimmering gold/yellow, the other is a pale pink cherry blossom shade, the bath has those black/yellow subway tiling from the 50s – we painted the walls a cream to tone it down, but my accessories are yellow/grey/black and white. this has been a challenge color mix. The fam room and laundry are turquoise. in the fam room, three walls are that 50s knotty pine with orangy tones. we like the rustic look of it. the accent wall is the turquoise. So the office is a breezeway of sorts between the coffee colored living rm and the fam room. (sorry, didn’t mean to write a book!)

  53. I am wanting to do the white planked walls in my entire master! You had me at easy choice for a perfect white. Who knew white was so complicated!?!?

  54. I love your bedroom makeover and the colors! I’d love to paint my office – right now it’s the only room I haven’t painted yet. It’s a third bedroom that’s a breezeway between the front and back of the house. Anyway, it’s painted that rental apartment creamy beige, and I’d like a color that’s more energetic.

  55. Dear Gina; thank you for sharing your heart, wisdom and naturally your decorating style – I do so enjoy following you. I’m going coastal so loved the mention of the white as whites really stump me. Thanks!

  56. yes, my kitchen and main bath both are the last rooms that I need to paint!! Not sure what color to paint bath but have found he color for my kitchen.

  57. This room looks so pretty. I like how it is pulled together and the clean lines. I would love to paint my kitchen. I have not done that room in my house yet.

  58. Lovely …I really love the planks on the wall …they add instant charm:)

  65. Beautiful bedroom! We’ve lived in our house going on 14 years, and have never painted even one single room, and trust me, our whole house needs refreshing. I think what’s been holding me back is my desire for all white woodwork, and I’ve lived in fear of making a big mistake in choosing the wrong white paint. Glidden’s White on White sounds perfect! And the perfect place to start!

  66. I really need to paint my living room, but I cant decide on what I want.

  67. love the colors. Just bought an old dw and trying to get up the nerve to paint the vinyl wall boards. Your site gives me hope!

Gorgeous and inspiring this new mama to update our lovenest! It’s time to give mommy and daddy’s room some loving attention now that baby and big brother’s rooms are complete. I love the pops of that sweet shade of blue and the colorful pillow…now I’ve got some real ideas to run with – thank you!

  85. I’m so inspired by your room, from the feature wall to the color combination….. I have my kids room ready to turn into a great inviting guest room, as the last one will be moving out within days….. Instead of leaving it as their room and walking by with sadness because they are no longer there….. It’s my plan to make it the best ever guest room, for them to come back to, and for other friends and family to use…..

  86. I like your photos- my bedroom could use an update

  87. I would like to paint my bedroom. It’s all white and has not been repainted since we first moved in 21 years ago. A touch of color would really bring it to life.

  96. We just finished painting my daughter’s room – we went with a white background and lots of colorful accents that will be easy to change as she grows

  97. My bedroom hasn’t been painted in years. It needs an update.
    Thanks for the contest.

  98. I would love to paint my kitchen!

  99. Our master needs rescuing from the terrible paint job we did a couple
    Of years ago.

  100. Your room turned out absolutely amazing and your color scheme is so unexpected but wonderful! Our guest bedroom could use a new paint job for sure : )

  101. I am in the process of making my own king size headboard out of an old door (or maybe 2!) and am going with the same teal/blue color you have in your curtains. Just a quick question, do you think a dark red would go with that color? We have 2 red wall hangings that have more of a distressed look about them, so I’d like to keep them just to save $ on new decore…

  102. Monique Hudson says:

Oh my I love it and that’s probably because this is my room! The set up the style and even down to the pattern on the curtains! Honestly speaking.. My room looks just like this one except my curtains goes all the way across the wall at the head of the bed, there are book cases in front of my other wall and no headboard. My curtains are grey and my walls are yellow, my comforter has the green yellow white and grey and I got it from TARGET! Only idea that I didn’t have and will be using is the color of the dresser. Mine is in the same location but it is currently brown. I was going to paint it white to match the bookcases but now it will definitely be the green color!

    Thanks!

  103. Love your new colors in the bedroom!! Did you do the plank treatment on the wall…I am really liking that look and was wondering if you did a “how to” on it? I have the perfect place for a plank wall in my house!! Great ideas in your home,,,thanks for sharing!

  104. Melissa says:

did you paint the planks before you put them up, or after you put them up??

  105. Kym Brown says:

Gina, I meant to ask you when I first saw this room but you’ve already seen my bad memory…did you find your chest of drawers in the turquoise already done or did you work your magic with paint?
