My master bedroom makeover is finally complete! You’ve been so very patient while I finished every little step along the way, but I hope you think the reveal is well worth the wait. It looks so different from before, it’s all light and airy and just my style. I have no idea what style to call it, it’s just me. A little farmhouse, a little cottagey, a few modern touches, and a lot of handmade goodness all around. As with all of my room makeovers, I start by choosing my colors, and then pretty much just go with my gut after that. I gravitate towards what I love and try to walk away from anything that doesn’t make my heart sing. But this room definitely makes my heart sing. Are you ready for the grand tour?
Before we jump in, let’s look at where I started.
I was comfortable, but not at all my style anymore. Three years ago I was all about some coastal style, but the more I lived with it, the less I liked it. And, that room was just a room that had decor and was filled with leftover bits, because we didn’t really have a budget, but we wanted a room that was somewhat pulled together. This was my attempt at making do.
So first I broke out the paint. Out with the blue, in with the white. Ahhh! Picking the right Glidden® paint white was so simple, because they don’t have 15 million options, only a few perfect shades to choose from. My choice? White on White. It’s a nice white without yellow undertones. It’s one of the best whites ever.
After I painted it all out, I put in new floors. Dark floors + white walls = the perfect combo.
I have no idea what made me decide to do an emerald, mustard, gray combo, but the colors just work together so well that I’m going with it 🙂
We did install a plank wall behind the bed for the focal wall. Simple 12 inch wide strips of 1/4 inch plywood nailed to the wall with a 1/8 inch gap. Behind the planks I painted the wall Eeyore’s Rain Cloud, a Disney Paint color by Glidden paint; because I wanted the gaps to really pop out. And I didn’t want that blue to show through. A simple 30 minute paint job was all it took to give the plank wall just another layer of perfection. Want a better look at the color? I used the leftover paint to give the nightstands a new coat of the pretty gray.
The ceiling, trim, doors and walls were all painted Glidden paint’s White on White. I like the look of the purely clean slate.
Before the makeover I didn’t have room for a chair in here, but I took out three pieces of furniture that were never used and magically I had room for a reading nook. Love it when that happens.
Yeah, that canvas pretty much sums up how I feel about waking up in this room every single day.
Thanks to Glidden paint for partnering with me on this post. I’m so glad they pushed me creatively to make another room come to life in our home.

I have a huge kitchen wall I would love to paint. Really love the curtains you made for this room. I need new living room curtains & can’t find anything I like. After seeing yours, I’m thinking I might just make some.

Beautiful bedroom. Our kitchen is going to be white, dark wood floors, charcoal and aqua. I am loving the combo in your bedroom and can’t wait to see our finished kitchen. Is that quilt from Target? I have had my eye on the dark blue version if so. Do you love it, and how does it wash?
Gina says
Hi Martha,
Yes! It’s from Target and we love it. It washes beautifully!

Our living room needs fresh paint. We haven’t touched the walls since we moved in seven years ago.

Jessica says
Gorgeous room– love the colors, the planked walls…all of it! Can you tell me where you got the barn lights? I haven’t seen ones with a pull-string option before. Thanks!
Gina says
Hey Jessica!
Thank you! They’re outdoor lights we found at Lowe’s, we just added a pull string adapter you can find in the lighting section. You screw it into the bulb socket and it turns any light into a pull string 🙂
Shauna Fisher says
Going with the light theme, I’m wanting to do this same thing in my master bedroom, but my husband is saying it’s too tricky! How do you power the lights? Are you guys lucky enough to have plug sockets right by your bed and just ran your power up the wall, or did you do something else to get power there!?
Gina Luker says
There were plugs already there 🙂
Heidi Still says
I have a bedroom that was previously my son’s, but is now becoming a guest room. My grandmother will be visiting us for 3 weeks later this fall and I would love to repaint the room for her visit. Take a boys room done in Seahawk Football colors and turn it into something inviting for guests. The White on White sounds like a perfect paint to try. Fresh, light, and inviting.
Gretchen says
Love, love, love the new room! My master bedroom is in desperate need of a makeover and painting it would be a perfect starting point. I’ve lived in my house for eight years and it looks exactly the same as the first day we moved in!

I love your make-over. Please let me know where you got the curtains. Thanks much.

Wow! Beautiful room. My husband and I just bought our first house, so I would be more than grateful to pain any room. But the one room that is in desperate need of a makeover would be the stairwell and hall. We have a double ceiling in our stairwell and it’s painted electric blue.
Lisa says
I am itching to repaint my bathroom. I am thinking of a plum / gray combo!
Love your makeover, great job!
Caitlin says
It looks fantastic!! My boyfriend and I just recently moved into our new home, and it needs some help. You mentioned you did not have a budget… do you have an estimate of how much it cost to complete the entire room???
Gina says
All total, it was around $500, but that included the new floor, which was nearly half of it. The original room (the before version) had basically no budget, so it was a step up, but not by much 😉
Faye says
Love it 🙂
So need to paint master bedroom. It’s been 10 years. Want a bright fun accent wall , have any suggestions?
Gina says
I love a good accent wall! I especially love them in a pattern, like stripes or chevron. I’ve really been leaning towards oranges/yellows a lot lately – would one of those work for you?

I am curious to know if the floors in your bedroom are the same pine floors that you installed in others areas of your home, or something different. Your bedroom looks beautiful – but if you can’t tell I am a little obsessed with your pine floors. I so want to try them, but haven’t taken the plunge yet.
Gina says
Yep, they’re the same 🙂 I’m a little obsessed with them, too! We’ll be doing our living room soon…
Beth says
Hi Gina, I would like to do the wood floors the same way you did throughout my house. Where did you buy the wood and is it 1×6 planks? What kind is it? Do you already have a blog on that? Thanks!
Gina Luker says
Yes! We bought them locally at a building supply store – they’re local 1×6 pine (much cheaper than big box stores). In the post there is a link to the DIY floors, so be sure to check it out 🙂

Haha! I wondered what that had to do with my questionable parenting :O
Madie says
Love your room!! What is the name of the paint color you used on your dresser??
Melanie says
Wow, this is a really refreshing palette. I would love to redo my master bath, it’s old school dark chocolate brown and light blue and I’m so over it. Ready for a change! .
trudy says
I’ve painted every room in the house, except my small home office (which is the proverbial tiny third bedroom in a small brick ranch that we’ve cottaged up on the outside), that is painted that apartment rental beige/cream white. It’s boring and I think it effects my creativity! But I’m challenged to choose a color – I think a red (which blue undertones) would be great, but that is sort of a dated look. I don’t want anything too soothing or pastelly. For the rest of my house, it’s quite a mixed bag of colors – my newly updated kitchen (silestone counters and a terra cotta tile floor (laminate but laid like tile with grout, and new appliances in black) is a Tuscan yellow/tangerine. Living rm is a coffee and cream brown – we also painted the ceilings to make the ceilings look higher – it works. One bedroom is a shimmering gold/yellow, the other is a pale pink cherry blossom shade, the bath has those black/yellow subway tiling from the 50s – we painted the walls a cream to tone it down, but my accessories are yellow/grey/black and white. this has been a challenge color mix. The fam room and laundry are turquoise. in the fam room, three walls are that 50s knotty pine with orangy tones. we like the rustic look of it. the accent wall is the turquoise. So the office is a breezeway of sorts between the coffee colored living rm and the fam room. (sorry, didn’t mean to write a book!)
Tanya says
I am wanting to do the white planked walls in my entire master! You had me at easy choice for a perfect white. Who knew white was so complicated!?!?
trudy says
I love your bedroom makeover and the colors! I’d love to paint my office – right now it’s the only room I haven’t painted yet. It’s a third bedroom that’s a breezeway between the front and back of the house. Anyway, it’s painted that rental apartment creamy beige, and I’d like a color that’s more energetic.
valarie says
Dear Gina; thank you for sharing your heart, wisdom and naturally your decorating style – I do so enjoy following you. I’m going coastal so loved the mention of the white as whites really stump me. Thanks!

Beautiful bedroom! We’ve lived in our house going on 14 years, and have never painted even one single room, and trust me, our whole house needs refreshing. I think what’s been holding me back is my desire for all white woodwork, and I’ve lived in fear of making a big mistake in choosing the wrong white paint. Glidden’s White on White sounds perfect! I am in the process of making my own king size headboard out of an old door (or maybe 2!) and am going with the same teal/blue color you have in your curtains. Just a quick question, do you think a dark red would go with that color? We have 2 red wall hangings that have more of a distressed look about them, so I’d like to keep them just to save $ on new decore…
Monique Hudson says
Oh my I love it and that’s probably because this is my room! The set up the style and even down to the pattern on the curtains! Honestly speaking.. My room looks just like this one except my curtains goes all the way across the wall at the head of the bed, there are book cases in front of my other wall and no headboard. My curtains are grey and my walls are yellow, my comforter has the green yellow white and grey and I got it from TARGET! Only idea that I didn’t have and will be using is the color of the dresser. Mine is in the same location but it is currently brown. I was going to paint it white to match the bookcases but now it will definitely be the green color!
Thanks!
Dawna says

did you paint the planks before you put them up, or after you put them up??

Gina, I meant to ask you when I first saw this room but you’ve already seen my bad memory…did you find your chest of drawers in the turquoise already done or did you work your magic with paint?
Gina Luker says
Hi Kym,
It’s Provence by Annie Sloan – it’s a great color, huh?
mary says
I like your blog, just have an odd comment. Many bloggers I’ve visited in the past year employ that exact pattern – the one on the curtains in this room, in some large piece in their home (curtains, large rug, etc). It’s some kind of “trend” perhaps. It appears acroos many blogs, no matter what style the blogger otherwise uses. Not sure why.
