Finding color inspiration for a master bedroom makeover

As a mom, I’m always the last to get everything. That could be new clothes or shoes, a plate made at dinner and even hobbies and fun stuff. It’s only fitting that my room was the last of the house to get a major makeover. Every other room in my house has had a complete overhaul in the last five years except my master bedroom. But times, they are a-changin’. With every room redo in my home we always start with an inspiration, whether it’s a piece of art, an image in my head, or in this case a fabric. After I found my jumping off point of fabric, figuring out the rest of the plan is fairly easy, thanks to the color tools at My Colortopia.

Master Bedroom Moodboard
Now that all the rest of my home has been gutted and replaced, it’s finally time to tackle the master bedroom. I’ve given it a little love in the past with some paint and pretties, but it never got the full “Gina” treatment from top to bottom. Remember how I said those times are a-changin’? Yep, it’s time for it to all go.

To find the color scheme for my room, I started with some bright fabric. I also knew that I wanted to bring in some metal accents as well as add a feature wall. When I put it all together in my head, choosing any color other than white seemed like a nightmare, so I’m going with white walls. Imagine that!

White can be a little tricky, though. You’d think that choosing a white paint would be easy enough. Nuh-uh. There are so many white paint choices on the market that it will make your head spin! Glidden paint has a simplified palette of only colors that are really liveable. Some paint companies have a billion whites, and sometimes you can barely even tell the difference between them – all the choices will drive you mad. Who wants to stare at 58 white paint chips, wondering which one is the “perfect” one. Ain’t nobody got time for that. Glidden paint makes it much easier to choose – which makes my life a lot easier, too. That, my friends, is a win/win.

So, to save myself a little time, I used the My Image Inspiration tool to pick some paint colors. Who’d have thought to use those colors with that fabric? It’s pure genius, I tell ya. And, there’s even a white color on there, too. Yep, it just makes life a lot easier. It’s amazing how just a little paint and an afternoon can change the look of a room. I mean, seriously. Even if you aren’t a ma-ja DIYer, paint is something that everyone can do. So that’s where I’m starting.

So what do you think? Take this room from boring blue to wonderful white? Stay tuned…. this is gonna be fun!

  1. My kitchen, dining and family room open floor designs were inspired by lots of research on the amazing blogs out there. White appliances were the basis and we worked off those using white as our accent around the entire space.

  2. My current DIY is our master bedroom. It was inspired by my hatred for the chair rail in that room. Once I tore it down, a makeover was a necessity. 😉 Have fun with your transformation!

  3. We are on the search for paint colors now, too… so this blog post was very helpful to me!

  4. Cool tool. I know exactly where you are coming from. Picking paint is not all that easy. You know I ended up using Glidden. Straight form the can white! I know. Crazy. Worked out perfect. Look forward to seeing the transformation. I bet you’ll love the white. I went “aah” after my walls turned white. Good luck!

  5. Lovely! My next home decor project is going to be inspired by my daughter and her love of color!

  6. Christal Wise says:

My mom had a huge gilded mirror that I wanted to use. However, gilded gold was not what I ha in mind for my living room! So…. I pained it bright white and now I love it!

  7. Jenny S. says:

My current inspiration for my master bedroom redo is from a lamp. I saw this wonderfully crafted lamp with green leaves and brown wood accents. That was the jumping off point and now I am close to finishing the room. It will be calming and peaceful retreat – kind of like being in the trees.

  8. My last home improvement project, our living room, was inspired by a cool gray starburst mirror I got at target on clearance!

  9. Aww, I’ve always love the pictures of your beautiful, blue bedroom! Can’t wait to see the completed new master make-over, though!

I have several on-going home decor projects, including re-doing my ugly brown, white and hunter green kitchen in our new home!! Eeek! Our kitchen is the first room you see when you walk into our house, so it had to be the first one to be re-done. I wanted something bright and welcoming. After doing a lot of internet browsing, I found a post here: and knew that I wanted to do that to my counters as well! I loved the dramatic change it made in her kitchen, and that was just what I needed for mine! I was so inspired by how gorgeous her kitchen looked with just that one change.

  10. My bedroom. I received a free sample of Valspar coffee and creme and when I painted a small sample of it on my bedroom wall I knew I had found my color. It has undertones of a pale green which I truly love. So the paint color was what I built everything in my room around.

  11. My upcoming remodeling project was inspired by the tile i fell in love with for my shower! It has stainless steel tiles mixed in with glass and ceramic….LOVE!

  12. Tammy Ruesch says:

Im in the middle of trying to get my bedroom doneLooking for fabric now. Like every mom my kids bedrooms were done and my is last. Mine you we have been here 10 yrs. Lol With all the great blogs out there its a sin Not to get it done. Lol 🙂

  13. Rhonda Counts says:

I helped my daughter paint her house and I loved the color she chose. That led me to a piece of fabric, which then became my inspiration to build upon.

  14. My last home decor project was inspired by pages I have tirn out over the years from decorating magazines. I went with a darker bolder grey wall paint color, which was a big change for me and it turned out great against my light oak floors and really makes the white trim “pop.”

  15. Anne Marie says:

My inspiration is actually your blog – I get so many excellent ideas from you – thanks so much for all you do.

  16. Mary Alice Kenley says:

My last home décor project was born out of my desire to have a banquette setting for my dining room. My interior designer friend gifted me with a 7′ long armless sofa in perfect condition. It was too low for a dining table, so Awesome Wonderful (my version of Mr. SCC) built a frame and attached it to the bottom. Then the biggest issue was that I had no table! Again, AW stepped up and cut a thick piece of plywood to the size we wanted. He made it more solid by attaching 1×1 pieces to form a frame all the way around the plywood. For legs we went to the restaurant supply store and bought three restaurant table legs ($20 each). Bottom line: The table is perfect! The only restriction is that I have to keep a cloth on it all the time, which isn’t a problem at all–I just use fabrics that can be bleached so I don’t fret if someone makes a spill!

  17. Sheila Bailey says:

My inspiration for my living room was a photo my husband took.

  18. A colorful IKEA curtain inspired my makeover. The colors were pulled out for walls, furniture, and accessories. Easy peasy! Thanks!
