DIY Spice Rack

I realize that there is a theme going on with the posts I’ve been bringing over here. They all revolve around one room in my home…the kitchen. Well, truth be told, you just learned a whole lot about me! I love love LOVE the kitchen. I love the smells, the noises of happy eaters, I love the comfort…it’s just a happy place! Today I’m showing you how I made a cute spice rack for my rental apartment for about $10 (including the containers!). I have the spices drying on my herb dryer, now I need someplace to put them! So I bring you an easy diy spice rack!spice rack Ignore the empty containers of ginger and rosemary. I’m drying rosemary. And ginger, well…it got used up to a worthy cause (cookies, of course!). But, isn’t this just great! In this apartment kitchen they don’t believe in nice cupboards. They function fine. But, there aren’t the little extra’s like…shelves?…in a few of the cupboards. So, my spices were stacked up 2-3 high. It was getting ridiculous. I use spices all the time when cooking and it was starting to bum me out how sad and pathetic my little spice cupboard was. So, I took matters into my own hands…

  • expandable wooden utensil tray (try TjMaxx, Marshalls, Homegoods…etc for inexpensive and pretty ones!)
  • small containers (these come in a pack of 10 from the Dollar Tree)
  • labels (you can make your own. Or, go to the post-it area of your local store and find these from Avery)

To Do:

  1. Expand your utensil tray. (be sure it’s straight)
  2. Screw it into place with small wood screws (again, be sure it’s straight. mine wasn’t so much. Can you tell?)
  3. Put the labels on your containers.
  4. Fill and label.

For the record, I added a quick coat of lavender paint on the front of mine. I was hoping to impress you all. And, it looks so lovely in my kitchen! 2. Cutest spice rack ever, and so creative! Now I must have one for myself!!! Great job, Janel!!!

  3. I love this spice rack!! It is moving to the top of my “to make” list. You always have fantastic ideas. Thanks so much for sharing.

  4. Wonderful idea, love it !!!

  5. This is fabulous! I’m going to definitely make one of these even though I have cupboards in my (very tiny) kitchen, just because I use herbs and spices all the time like you do, and this puts them right out there in a gorgeous little shelf system!!! This is just the best idea! And I had no idea you could get those containers at the dollar store!!!!

  6. Smart Lady… and Spicy I might add! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Love this idea! Thank you so much for sharing!

Great idea, Gina! Thanks for sharing.

  8. This is a really cute idea and very practical, too. You are very creative and resourceful.
But, you know what, the fact that the containers extend out over the shelves a bit would drive me nuts. I know it is silly, but I just can not abide any kind of container that sticks out over the shelf.

    • They do extend a bit, it doesn’t bother me. But…if it does bother you a cool thing about the size of these utensil organizers is that most of them are the perfect size for the small round spice containers you can get at the grocery store. Those little round ones fit perfectly! That might help solve that problem.

  9. This is so adorable! I LOVE it and I like you have a TON of spices and herbs and I use them all the time! I do believe this exceptionally creative project has my name on it!!!! Thanks so much for sharing! hugs…

  10. Can you tell me the number of the labels you used? I can’t find any like that with the scalloped edge. Thank you!

  11. Great! I love it ๐Ÿ™‚
    thank you!!
