Crisp cool breezes, Friday night lights, pumpkins everywhere – I do believe fall is upon us. Living in the south, we don’t have 4 distinct seasons, unless you count the 2-3 weeks of mild weather between the two extremes of hot and cold. One month you’re sweating off your Mary Kay, and the next your toes are like ice cubes. Crazy weather, I tell ya.
With the leaves looking so pretty in all their splendid shades, it makes me realize that it’s gonna be getting cold really soon. When I start thinking about that, then I think about the humungo heating bills we had last year. Seriously, they were twice our summer bills! So, I went on a mission to figure out how to bring down my bill a bit, and learned that caulk is the answer.

I guess it’s common sense, but winterizing your home is just something that I’d never put much thought into. However, with replacing windows already happening around here, the exterior trim also had to be replaced & caulked as well. The folks at DAP products asked me if we’d be interested in winterizing, and with the quickest ever answer to a question, I said “YES!”
Once I did my homework, here’s what I learned about the effectiveness of caulking:

  • For as little as $20 worth of caulk, you can save up to 20% on your heating & cooling bills. (That’s about $80 a month in the winter for me – huge savings!)
  • You should caulk around windows, doors, and fill any cracks around basements, crawl spaces, and around the base of your home – anywhere that air can leak in or out.
  • Caulk should be used on gaps 1/2 inch or smaller, any larger gaps should be filled with foam sealants.
  • You should check your sealants twice a year – fall and spring.
  • In addition to the $$$ savings, caulk makes a home look better, too :)

I’m kind of ashamed to say that weatherizing isn’t something that I’ve learned to do as a homeowner, but after learning more about it, I kinda had a V-8 moment! We’ll be gettin’ our caulk on in the this week & next week, while the weather is mild enough to comfortably work outside. Seal Your Home badge
