String Up Some Magic: DIY Dark Academia Banner

This article is from the October 2025 issue of Illumine Magazine, originally written by Krystal Jade from Cozy Aesthetic Vibes

There’s a quiet kind of alchemy in sitting down with scissors, string, and a table scattered with beautiful scraps of paper. The clink of a teacup, the scent of candle wax melting nearby, the faint hum of a favorite playlist — before you even begin, you’ve created a little ritual space for yourself. That’s where the magic starts.

This is more than just a craft project — it’s a collection of miniature stories. Each piece from the Vintage Ephemera Kit (found in the October issue of Illumine) feels like it could have been plucked from the drawer of an old apothecary, slipped between the pages of a well-read novel, or discovered in the corner of a curiosity shop. There’s the skeletal hand diagram, the “Book of Wonders” page, the number 13 medallion — all whispering of history, mystery, and a little bit of mischief.

My friend Jade took the kit into her own home and worked her magic. She didn’t just assemble a banner — she conjured a spell for her kitchen. She let the shapes mingle in unexpected ways, added delicate lace along the top, and hung it so it danced gently above a row of much-loved cookbooks and trailing green vines. With the addition of a candle flickering nearby, the scene looked like something you’d find in a tucked-away witch’s kitchen, warm with life and layered in stories.

That’s the beauty of this project — it’s endlessly adaptable. Yours might feel like a piece of Halloween décor, all moody shadows and Gothic charm. Or perhaps you’ll create something light and whimsical, perfect for year-round display. Either way, you’ll be working with elements that have personality and depth, and you’ll leave your mark on them with the choices you make — the order, the layering, the extra touches that are yours alone.

Gather Your Magic

Before you begin, collect your tools and set the mood.

  • Dark Academia Ephemera printable kit
  • Paper or card stock (card stock gives structure, paper allows soft movement)
  • Scissors
  • Lace trim, ribbon, or twine for stringing
  • Glue, sewing machine, or hole punch for assembling
  • Hot glue, double-sided tape, or thumbtacks for hanging
  • Optional: Ink pad or distressing tool for aging edges
  • Optional: A cup of tea and your favorite moody playlist (highly recommended)

Weave the Spell

  • Print & Prepare: Print the pieces on your chosen paper. Card stock will give a sturdy, crisp finish, while regular paper can be layered for a fluttery, old-parchment look.
  • Summon the Past: If you’d like that worn, time-traveled aesthetic, run an ink pad softly along the edges of each piece or use a distressing tool. The goal is a soft shadow of age, as if these pieces have been handled by many curious hands over the years.
  • Arrange the Magic: Spread out your pieces and begin to play. There’s no wrong way to do this — some will prefer symmetry, others a more whimsical scatter of shapes and motifs. Lay them out on the table, move them around, and let your eye tell you when it feels right.
  • Bind the Spell: Choose your assembly method: sew them along the top for a polished, connected look, glue them to a length of lace for a romantic finish, or punch small holes and thread them with twine for rustic charm. Lace or ribbon not only looks beautiful but helps the banner hang evenly.
  • Charm It Into Place: Attach your finished banner where it can be admired — under cabinets, across a mantel, along a bookshelf. Hot glue will give a strong hold, double-sided tape keeps it discreet, and thumbtacks make it easy to reposition.

Alternative Enchantments

The magic of the Dark Academia Ephemera kit doesn’t end with bunting. The individual pieces are versatile enough to wander into other projects:

  • Junk Journaling – Layer pieces into your journal as pockets, tags, or collage elements.
  • Gift Wrapping – Tie them onto packages with twine for a touch of curiosity-shop elegance.
  • Altar Décor – Use select images as seasonal altar cards, rotating them with the moon phases or sabbats.
  • Short Garlands – Make mini-versions to drape over mirrors, doorways, or even a bookshelf.
  • Scrapbooking – Add depth and vintage flair to memory pages.
  • Stationery Magic – Glue them to the fronts of blank cards or use them as bookmarks.

Notes from Jade:

Jade’s version of this project is a perfect example of letting the materials speak for themselves. She layered each piece beneath a delicate scalloped lace trim, letting just a whisper of white peek above the bold, dark imagery. Hanging under her cabinets, the banner became part of her everyday space — a little visual poem above the cookbooks and herbs, always there to greet her as she brewed tea or chopped vegetables.

She also shared a few of her favorite tricks for getting it just right:

  • Choose your arrangement intuitively — there’s no wrong order; let the shapes and colors guide you.
  • Use lace or string for hanging — it not only looks beautiful but helps the banner drape evenly.
  • Attach with intention — hot glue works for a strong hold, double-sided tape for something temporary, and thumbtacks if you like to move your décor around.

Her advice is simple but spot-on: “Play with it until it feels like yours.” That’s the kind of magic worth stringing up — something beautiful, personal, and entirely your own.
