Useable & beautiful items are my favorite kind to decorate with, so when some friends asked me to join in on a jar challenge, I knew just what I would create: a DIY hourglass. This project is so, so simple, yet is cute as can be! With only a few supplies, you can make it in minutes… and it would be a gorgeous gift {or even perfect for a New Year’s display.} Wanna make your own?
First you’ll need a few supplies:
Two jars (I found these round ones at Hobby Lobby for about $1 each)
sand
E-6000 craft glue
scrap wood
Drill with small bit
Start by putting a thin ring around the top of the lid (do both lids – I left one blank so you could see it better.)
The put the lids together, doing your best to get them as perfect as you can. Set aside and let dry for 24 hours before moving to the next step.
Once your glue is set, place it on top of the scrap wood and drill in the center, through both lids. I used my Rockwell 3RILL, because it’s strong enough for the project, yet lightweight and perfect for me.
Fill one jar 2/3 of the way with sand. Then screw the lids on, so you have one jar on top of the other – and you’re done!
You can totally make this in less time than it will take the sand to flow through your DIY hourglass!

I love this DIY project. How long is this timer? It’s hard to tell how big or small the glass containers are from the pictures. Thank you!
