Did you know I live in the house I grew up in? My family has lived here for over 35 years, so when my parents decided to move about 10 years ago, there was no way I could let anyone else live in “our house.” I grew up helping my dad with DIY projects, from building a building a barn to working on simple things that made my mamma happy.
This is my first Father’s Day without my dad. He passed away 3 months ago, and I miss him every day. Once in a while I’ll finish a project and wish I could call him over to come see. He loved watching us work, even when he eventually got too sick to pitch in and help. I spent countless hours learning how to do almost everything from fix a sink to fixing a car with my dad, which started my love of power tools. He helped me to become the strong, independent woman that I am today. “Figure out a way to fix it” was his motto – and it really does apply to almost every aspect of life. Have a bad day? “Figure out a way to fix it.” Hate your job? “Figure out a way to fix it.” He not only helped me to build a strong work ethic, but eventually build a strong business. It was his faith in my abilities that helped me to succeed in everything I’ve ever accomplished.
He was so proud of all of the renovations we’d done on this house since we moved in. The very last time we hung out on my front porch together a few months ago, he took the time to tell me how much he liked all of the things we’d done to the house both inside and out. I didn’t even realize how much that simple conversation would come to mean to me months later – but I’m thankful that I had the time to sit and talk with him about how far we’d come and what we wanted to do next. Any time I would get stuck in a project, he’d just tell me “Figure out a way to fix it.” And I did. I took all those ways I figure out how to fix things and share them here with you.
So this Father’s Day I’m partnering up with Bosch Tools to help you build some memories of your own. One lucky winner will receive a Bosch 18-volt Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) Cordless Combo Kit with Soft Case (regularly $229 but on sale through 7/4/16 for $169) which includes Bosch Compact Tough™ 1/2-in drill/driver, 1/4-in hex impact driver, two 18-volt Lithium-ion batteries, charger and soft carry bag. The quality and durability of these tools is so amazing it’s no wonder that Bosch tools are some of the best you can buy. They make a wonderful gift that will help you build memories for years to come.
To enter, leave a comment telling me your favorite DIY project – that’s it!
Winner will be selected Saturday, June 18th at noon central time. Giveaway open to US residents, 18 and older. Void where prohibited. Winner will be contacted via email, so be sure your email address is correct on the comment form.
GOOD LUCK!
And Happy Father’s Day!

My favorite DIY was re-doing electrical wiring! My father and I had to take out all of the walls down to the studs, drill new holes for wires, decide where outlets would go, and staple wires to studs to keep them out of the way. It was a lot of fun and a great bonding experience with my dad!
Loni Cuatt says
My favorite DIY project that I’ve done so far has been making planter beds for my garden. Of course, the one I’m looking forward to is building a custom playhouse cottage for my daughter.
Jessica says
I think my favorite DIY project was fixing the spigot in my bathtub. It wasn’t fancy, and it looks the exact same, but it was my first foray into plumbing and it fixed my faucet from dripping, which made me feel very wasteful. And it turned out to be super easy!
Anne Marie says
I love to do shelves – one cannot ever have too manyt shelves.
Debra says
What a touching tribute to your father! And those encouraging words to “figure out a way to fix it”…priceless! Maybe you could print out those words and frame them along side a picture of your father?

I’m so excited about a fence and new garden we just made on our side yard. This side of the house never had anything done, so it finally is getting its own character. I painted and help my husband stake the fence and transfer plants from other locations of the yard to here.

My husband and I have a thing for making tables. Side tables, coffee tables, dining tables… We love them all.
Shanna says
My favorite DIY project was my first house – limited funds and zero DIY talent – my parents drove Ohio to Chicago to help me install new interior doors. Not an easy DIY project and my mom and dad helped with the install and staining (this was the days before the everything white phase – we stained beautiful oak doors that I refused years later to paint white)
Debohrah in Atlanta says
I grew up just the opposite. My father couldn’t boil water, let alone fix anything. It wasn’t until I divorced and began living alone that I knew I had to acquire DIY skills or I would be at the mercy of every person calling themselves a “handy man or woman.” While I still haven’t built a house or barn, I am becoming more knowledgeable every day – not bad for a 62 year old. Who says you can’t teach an old dog . . . Now I fix things for my parents and they are amazed at my DIY knowledge. Keep up the great work!
Carla says
Living in a 150 year old , falling down farmhouse, every project makes a difference. My favorite so far is we took a wasted ,nook space area and made a wall to wall storage bench/window seat with pillows on top.
Suzanna Renaud says
So far my favorite has been our living room. We did the same thing you did with your walls, adding the beadboard paneling and trim, and it looks so much nicer. It’s a tie between that and a REALLY ugly dining room table set that I received for free and chalk painted and recovered the chairs. It came out so pretty, I couldn’t believe how different it looked.
Annette says
My favorite DIY project was changing the look of the front of my house: painting the bricks/door/shutters and installing a new door lock/handle/doorbell/light.
Alicia says
My favorite DIY project was using tranforming an old metal milk can that I had been hiding out in my grandparents smokehouse into a cute decoration/plant stand at my front door.
Elaine says
The diy I am most proud of is trimming out my basement kitchen backsplash. Hubby didn’t get to it so I figured it out. Usually I have the ideas and he executes them but I am in the process of making over a thrift side table into an outdoor umbrella side table, hopefully it will turn out like I envision.
adina says
As crazy as this sounds, I do not have a favorite DIY project. I love all of them because I usually sucker my fiancé into helping me. Sometimes I just need his strength, but I love working with him and then being able to look back and say we did that!! Butttt, if I had to choose it would be my kitchen shelves since it was the first time I used a power tool. That got the ball rolling and it has snowballed from there!
Terrie says
My favorite and first big DIY project was when I re-sided the sheds. My husband had been dead about 6 years and the siding was disintegrating, the doors had fallen off. So I researched, planned and planned some more. I had to have someone help me hang the double doors. I had my eyes closed and my fingers crossed – I wasn’t sure if I built them the right size. They went together perfectly. Did wonders for my self confidence. I still smile when I think of that project.
Claudia D'Arcangelo says
Wow your post hit home with me. My dad taught me how to DIY too. He passed away two years ago – I think of him everyday and talk to him when I am doing something at home. All I know, I’ve learned from him…and it makes me so very happy. I just finished fixing up my back patio (including painting the Adirondack chairs he made for me and making and hanging drop cloth curtains). I now sit out there in the evenings with a great big satisfied smile on what I have accomplished.

Our kitchen makeover and our back porch is my favorite DIY projects. You can get some amazing pieces and spaces when you DIY them! We saved tons of money doing the work ourselves. It took us a lot longer than I thought, but we learned so much throughout the process and since we did it ourselves, it has more meaning and we are more proud of the changes we made!!!!

I like to fix things around the house but am not very good at it — like, I glued the fronts of drawers back together with wood glue. My husband, however, is an avid supporter of the Appalachian Service Project — he spends several weeks a year helping to repair and improve homes for the poorest folk in Appalachia — and it is for him that I would love to win this tool. In a way, all of his work is “do-it-yourself” because they never know until they get there what needs to be fixed or how they can go about doing it. So, that is really my favorite DIY!
Vicki and Jennifer 2 Bees in a Pod says
We recently created a master bedroom closet in a space that was previously part of a back porch. It was beyond our DIY capabilities but we figured out ways to make it work for us! We are very proud of our end results!

My, and my husband’s, favorite DIY was building our home 35 years ago. We got engaged and three months before our wedding we purchased a Lowe’s package home kit. We were right out of high school and gathered all of his/my friends and built it from the footers, which hubby hand-dug, to late, late nights of insulating the attic. Fast forward to years later and I still love painting kitchen cabinets, sinks and getting ready to finally remodel that 35 original bathroom.

My favorite DIY project was my kitchen cabinets. I was supposed to get a new kitchen but we had to drill a new well… I was disappointed but one day saw a magazine where a woman had redid her boring cabinets with trim and paint. I thought I could do that. Got some rope style trim, mitered the ends and made little frames for the flat boring doors. Painted everything white then used a glaze with some rusty brown paint and wiped most of that off…what a transformation and brightened up a dark boring kitchen.
Linda L. Seidel says

I’ve just started doing some very small diy projects. So the only two I’ve done so far are both faves. I took and old picture frame and painted it red then added white chicken wire and hung it in my kitchen and clothespin some of my mom and grandmas recipes to it. Both have recently passed so it’s a fave. Also I took an old pallet and cut it to look like a Christmas tree and strung white lights on it and placed it in my yard. With a hectic special needs lifestyle I don’t have a lot of free time when I do I love looking for, and doing, dig projects.

Hello there, and may God bless you and your father. I absolutely love old pieces of furniture that most people would consider “trash,” and simply throw it out. I have used old window panes, old dressers, shutters and doors. I appreciate the distressed wood and details – it’s like looking into the past at all it’s seen. I normally just revive the details and add my own touches and make something that was once “old” my own “new.” Thank you for my chance to win, I hope this gave you insight into my personal style, and continue to do what you do best!!
Nikki Ehlers says
I’ll bet your dad and mine would have been best buddies. That was my daddy’s best advice, too!

Hi…you actually gave me a shout out on your live chat!…Yes I am in the middle of a farmhouse redo. Went to just replace the toilet and the whole floor was rotten …and then the pipes were rusted through….and it went into two rooms up into the kitchen. Total gut job and…….ITS A RENTAL!!!! Blessing the owner because he is in no position to take care of any of this….. So…. I do and I don’t care if i win…. I just hope who gets it really needs it. ( I really do ) lol <3 Fathers are the best when they teach their girls how to work with tools….Mine did. ( I think he secretly wanted a boy first ) He passed 6 years ago at 66 yrs of age and let me tell you it's a hard road but the love we got will get us through until we meet again. I like to upcycle things I find at thrift stores and garage sales. My favorite DIY project was several years ago. I found an old, wobbly non-upholstered slim wooden chair at a Salvation Army store for like three or four dollars. Someone had painted it with a glossy dark brown paint that was cracked and chipped in areas. I could see though that the wood underneath was a stunning golden color. Making sure to put safety first with a NIOSH mask and goggles, I then sanded off all of the old paint by hand and using my trusty Dremel. I then realized to my horror that the wood had larvae in it in spots from some sort of insect. I almost gave up, but instead I drilled out all of the nests, filled them with wood filler, checked and re-checked the wood for two weeks to make sure that I didn’t miss any tunnels and nests, glued all the wooden pins that were loose and causing the wobbling and then finished the piece by wiping on a clear gel sealer that brought out the golden tones of the wood even more! I’m sitting in that chair right now as I’m typing this comment. =)

My favorite DIY that I did, was taking an old shipping crate I got from a friend and turning it into an outdoor loveseat with storage. I had to take all the wood apart, clean, sand, and remove about a million nails and screws. Then I began to put it back together to work as a couch. The only part that wasn’t origional was the plywood used for the seat. Stumped by the choice of painting or staining….I ended up doing a “white wash” except I used turquoise paint…because, why not! I loved that seat!! It was always the go to spot when we would be outside.

My favorite DIY project was when I thought about throwing out our full size bedroom suit that we’d had since we bought it at a yard sale a couple of weeks before we got married & didn’t have any money. The furniture was a creamy yellowish white with gold trim so I painted all the furniture black and used a silver spray paint to give the hardware an updated classier look. This was my first ever project and I am so thankful for the paint help I received at Lowes. I can’t tell you how much better it looks! Now we have guest room furniture that we’re proud of and our old bedroom suit got a new updated life to it. 🙂

My favorite DIY project so far I created was from an old dresser bought at a rummage sale for only $15. I removed some drawers to create shelves. Sanded the piece added large wooden balls to raise it up about 6″. Then I painted the entire thing in an aqua blue chalk paint. It’s now a functional buffet at a friends house. Love your inspiration.

I have so many projects, my garden is on going. My house is the fun space. I collect antiques and I’m constantly find space, so it’s not cluttered. All though some people think it’s too much. But i paint furniture which I love, constantly moving “things around” all ways looking for space. When i moved in here 6 years ago, I wish I would have taken pictures, this beach cottage was in shambles. I still have a ways to go, but i love it. Kitchen, Bathroom totally renovated…the rest painted, pine floors cleaned and polished…French doors installed, old ones were a mess, got the house evaluated for energy efficienty, and on and on. so that’s my constant projects.

I’m currently redoing my bathrooms’ and kitchen cupboards – sanding and staining. Takes time but the end result will be worth it!

I have so many mini- DIY projects on my farm. I had two old rakes that I took the heads off, sanded them down, painted one bright yellow, one bright purple. I hung one , rake tongs up, in my kitchen for keys, hats, fly sweaters, etc. The other hangs in my “bungalow” (my girl cave) for garden tools. They work great!

I don’t want to dredge up sad feelings, but I am so very sorry for the loss of your father. Holidays can be particularly rough after losing a parent. Sending you hugs this Father’s Day.
Okaaaay, favorite DIY project is revitalizing furniture. -Either refinishing or painting a piece with great bones & giving it new life. Sometimes it’s a long process, but it’s always worth the time & effort, especially if it’s a gift. I love the look on the recipient’s face when they get it!

My beautiful dream is taking a beautiful
Home, older model..Victorian home
With a wrap around deck..And relive
The life of it..A home that will take time
Give this beautiful home beauty and give
It detailed features. Putt my heart and
Mind into Fairyland. Lol.. Then when it’s
All done, Set back and enjoy something. That I did..And when my time here on
Earth is done, I will give it to my family
Or sale it to give the money to our children
With all these awful diseases, Cancer
Ect..And to OUR veterans. Give to people
Who do for us, Let them enjoy life for
Once. The only thing I would want is
Whoever gets this beautiful home, I wanted want them to keep it historical
Share the history, The love and patience
I took to put it back to life..I only wished and Prayed that us human could be restored after long lifebof wear anf tare.
God bless to us all…Cant wait to see
And hear who the WINNER is. .AMEN

We have a small strip of yard next to our carport that will not grow grass! We are installing a small flagstone patio, large enough for a small table and two chairs. The rest will be stepping stones, shade plants, a few colorful bowling balls (long story that involves my dad). It’s gonna be a wonderful place for morning coffee!! Who needs grass!
Joyce says
I got a very old nasty looking dresser and just knew that I could make it look beautiful (I had never done anything like this before). Well, it had an overlay that was in bad shape on the top and some missing trim. I decided to just keep working until I came up with something I was happy with and stick with it! Needless to say I just love this dresser and that was the start of an addiction….I just LOVE taking something nobody wants and turning it into something beautiful. My husband doesn’t understand at all BUT I just tell him this is cheaper than therapy
Debbie Kugler says
My favorite DIY project is when we built our house. It was my favorite because my dad was here helping every step of the way. It was the last project I did with my dad and having his knowledge of construction helped us so much. So much has changed since then, my dad passed away from cancer 8 years ago, but this beautiful house filled with love is a constant because of my dad. His help and advise made this my little piece of heaven here on earth!

Our DYI project is our 1784 small colonial farmhouse. We think it is even earlier . . No closets and only a few cabinets in the kitchen. It is a work in progress . . But worth it in the end. . .Thank you for your hints and ideas. they really help us out !

Front porch swing… I remember swinging on my great grandparents with my dad when I was little. He used to say my mom would grow old on their own. The old front porch swing always reminded me of togetherness and love. Just something I always carried with me. Ours is my favorite place to sit!

I’ve recently developed my own love of power tools. To which I’ve embarked on building all kinds of stuff. My most proud accomplishment is that I made a pedestal for my queen size bed. I framed it and cross beamed it with 2×10’s using a total 7 of them and then topped it with plywood…No more flimsy squeaky bed frame for me. Would love my own set of tools to create other stuff.

I love hearing how your father taught you how to fix things on your own because that’s exactly what my father has taught me. I especially love when I can enjoy DIY projects with my father’s help and guidance. Right now, we’re in the process of restoring a 30-drawer wood cabinet from around the 1940s. After several hours of trying to remove layers of old paint and stain, we sanded it and are ready to prime it. Then the fun part of applying a new coat of paint, attaching a new back panel, and then reattaching the original drawer pulls. There is a space in my scrapbook room waiting to welcome it home! What I’ll love most about the finished cabinet is thinking about my father every time I use it! Thank you for the opportunity to enter your giveaway!

My fiancé and I have started remodeling his home to make it more OUR home. We’ve done a few rooms, but my FAVORITE is our bedroom! Before, it was kind of lifeless and cold. Now, it’s a warm, inviting, romantic room to be in. Eventually, we will remodel the while home. I love the romantic farmhouse accenting with shades of pinks.
Kathy Armstrong says
Not sure I have a favorite but one of my first was a big circular rock planter that I built for our first house many years ago. It was hard work moving all those rocks but I was so proud when I finished. Then I decided it would look better in another spot and moved the whole thing!

Well I can relate, I just lost my dad a month ago. Although he was not all that handy and lived 900 miles away, he did build a catamaran in our garage when I was a kid. Since I have divorced I have had to learn to do most everything on my own. My favorite DIY projects are those that are outside.

Thank you for sharing your story about your dad… he sounds like a great guy!! <3 I lost both of my parents at the tender age of twelve, I am now 56 yrs. old. I wish that I could tell you that the feeling of loss will go away… it hasn't for me, but it has gotten easier to cope with, as time has passed. I'm grateful for having my parents for the short time I did. I can certainly see why your dad was so proud of your accomplishments! Since I have had to learn to be self reliant, I have done/attempted many different types of "projects", from small ( individual pieces ) to big( whole rooms ), to single out or even REMEMBER my favorite at my age, is near impossible!! Some of my favorite projects were refinishing/painting furnture on the front porch, while my six little ones watched through the screen door on nice summer days. I think I instilled a bit of that resourcefulness in my now adult kids, who like to do projects of their own!! 😉
Carolyn says
My favorite project was restoring an antique secretary desk. I painted the inside red and I love it ! I love following your FB page also.
Stacey says
My favorite DIY project…augh, I honestly can’t decide. My first thought was a porch swing that my husband and I designed & built together two summers ago. We had gone through something very difficult in our marriage, and as a way to come together, we decided to start this project. I had always dreamed of having a home with a porch swing & this would be a place for us to spend time together when it was finished as well!! I also enjoy creating projects out of the barn wood from the farm my dad grew up on (I also grew up on the same farm, and my parents live their still)…most of them end up right back on the farm with him!
Pat says
I love that your Dad taught you all of those skills! I’m still learning. My favorite DIY project so far has been transforming a space for my office that is still in progress. It was a storage room in our basement that ended up being a clutter catch-all. Now it’s going to be a useful space!

Hello, my name is Sheila and my utmost favorite DIY project was my kitchen cupboards.
When we bought the home, they were original from 1964, I decided to strip them and paint dogwood flowers on the light wood.
After getting a few done I didn’t like the way it looked so I didn’t continue with that procedure so instead what I’m doing now is I’m adding two different types of trim, one is a 1 inch molding and the other goes just inside of it and it is a rope type trim. First I glued the trim down then I use a nail gun and puts short little nails in it, wood putty to fill the holes and painted it all cream and then I antiqued them. I absolutely love them!
I have pictures, but couldn’t figure how to attach
Jan Durkin says
My favorite DIY project was a series of pieces of furniture that I refinished (with some help from hubby) many years ago. We didn’t have a lot of money, so we bought three inexpensive, but ugly pieces to refinish. All three pieces were covered with many, many coats of paint. It took a really long time, and new techniques and skills I had to learn, to get all of those layers of paint out of the nooks and crannies. I restained the gorgeous wood and they turned out to be really beautiful pieces of furniture. We still have two of the pieces 35 years later, and my son now has the leaded glass bookcase in his home. It was the beginning of an DIY life for me.

For many years I found so much pleasure in sewing for my family and others. BUT, not until I asked my husband for a pneumatic nail gun did I realize what fun tools were. So I acquired a sander, spray paint gun, drill set, the guys have been having all the real fun.
I tiled 80% of my floors, and one shower stall, then my counter back splash in the kitchen.
Right now I’m trying to figure out how to display a grinders wheel from ORLY Market.

My favorite DIY project has to be one that isn’t even finished yet. I had a chair as a small child that I have kept stored in our shed. It was all beat up and rickety. I went looking for it when we moved and couldn’t find it. I thought it must have been thrown away, because my husband cleaned out the shed and took a trailer full of old stuff to the dump.
Needless to say, I was really upset. That chair meant a lot to me, because my mom painted it and decoupaged it when I was about 3. Well last week, my husband went to our old house to move some more of our things to our new house. When he got back, I was looking out the window while they unloaded the trailer. I saw my chair being unloaded into his new shed. I was soooo happy and when my daughter came inside she said “Daddy has a huge surprise for you, I want to tell you what it is but I can’t, I’ll get in trouble. He told me Not to tell you…but it’s killing me to keep it a secret. ” Soooooo now I’m sitting here so elated that my chair didn’t get thrown away, but I can’t even say anything!
O-well, I can’t wait to see what he does with it to fix it all up. I wish he’d hurry though, I’m about to bust!
Charise Craig says

I sanded it down, painted it with a cream-colored base, and glazed it with a chocolate brown color to give it a streaked look. It turned out cute, and I gave it to my daughter for her new apartment.

He built our night stands, tv cabinet…so much!

I’m new to DIY jobs, but I recently re-did my bench rocker on my porch. The varnish was almost off, and I wanted to repaint it with a bright color. I had to sand away the rough spots and the loose varnish. I then sprayed painted it. I choose a color called Koi Pond, and it is a shade of aqua blue. I found some matching outdoor pillows. My house is on the main road of my small town so I’ve had a lot of good comments about my bench!

My dad passed away a year ago yesterday. I , like you miss him everyday. We started collecting and refinishing antiques together when I was around 14, I’m now 58. Back then you could go to farm auctions and find great things for next to nothing. My favorite project was an old pie safe, with the original tin. It probably had 10 layers of paint. The good part of that was the tin was preserved, the had part was, my dad was a perfectionist and after hours of scraping, steel wool, tooth brushes and tooth picks we had a beautiful walnut cabinet. My daughter in law now has it and cherishes it and the history. My husband and I have carried in the tradition of all things old. Collecting antiques and restoring old homes. Our current project is our retirement home. A 1929 bungalow. He is commuting right now so only home in weekends. That leaves me with projects all week. Would be so happy to have new tools
Rachel Gentry says
I have really enjoyed rehabbing my “new to me” 1970’s camper!

My favorite diy project has been building me a small apartment w/ loft (~500sq ft total) in one corner of my shop out at the family ranch. Even tbough I’m a 100% disabled vet I’ve done almost all the work myself. (Ex father-in-law helped with electrical & plumbing) It’s taken longer than expected but I’m getting there. Still have the stairs & my cabinets to finish then I’ll be done. Using old tin for wainscoting & panels on the cabinet doors & all the rest of the walls as well as the cabinet face frames are from pallets I broke down myself. Lots of hard work but it’s almost like a therapy for me to help deal with my constant pain.
Maegan Standart says
I picked up this old low setting dining table set at a thrift shop. The able had damaged veneer and beautiful chairs with roses carved on them. I spent days steaming and chiseling away at the veneer, and my guilty pleasure of carefully sanding the beautiful wooden carved chairs. That had been by far my most favorite DIY project.

LOVE LOVE LOVE your posts!
Refinishing an old bench that belonged to my husband’s grandmother, picked up a free cabinet someone was giving away for free and making it into a kitchen island and went to do a DIY at Home Depot last night but the instructor was sick and I was the only one who showed up. They gave me all the supplies for free with the detailed instructions to make a beverage stand (they even cut most of the pieces and gave me the galvanized bucket that sits in a cut out on the top shelf of the stand). Thought this could be something me and my young daughters could do together over the summer vacation. Keep up the excellent posts! They are SO inspiring!

My absolute favorite project so far is our guest bath redo. When I was little we lived in a huge farmhouse with a beautiful claw foot tub. I do not live in a huge farmhouse..in fact it’s as far as you can get from that..it’s a doublewide mobile home but I have always said I would have my own claw foot tub. I found one and to my amazement we made it work.. I am so excited and can’t wait till the whole project is finished. Thank you for sharing all your amazing ideas!! You are awesome 🙂

My project was to cover up my electrical fuse box that is in my living room. So I went to a junk store and found a picture in a frame ,painted over it and used some decals that matched my house, Really proud of it
Susan McVay says
We live in a manufactured home and you know those panels of pre papered drywall they use? I hate those. And more than that I hate those matching strips of paper covers lathe the use to cover the seams. Uggggleeeee!! So, one spring when I was off work on sick leave I got bored and decided I was going to tape and mud those seams and paint….my husband thought I was nuts but that’s really nothing new. We went to the Restore and got some paint, L O V E my Restore by the way, and then went and got some drywall mud and tape and off I went. I had to do one wall at a time because there was nowhere to go with all the furniture in the room. I would just move all the stuff away from one wall and pull the strips, then yank out all those little tiny nails that got left behind. Then sand a bit because the panels were not even. A little mud a little tape, wait for it to dry, maybe a little more mud, sand again and then paint! Move all the furniture back and then start the process over on the next wall. It took me a long time to get done by doing it that way but when I was done!!!! I had beautiful walls with none of those ugly strips!!! And I was so proud I had done all but one seam by myself! I have done a lot of creating and crafting and even a home improvement project or two but that was the biggest and best. Love your sweet southern accent by the way <3 🙂

I love trying to make a birdhouse. I lost one of my legs a year ago. And I’ve really been wanting to start trying to make a lot of different things. I want to make a family picture door also. I’m sure i can do it, but i don’t have the tools to do it with. Being on disability and raising my grandsons doesn’t leave much for other things. I’m kind of like a mommy, daddy, grandpa and grandma rolled into one person. So i would be so thankful and grateful to win. My grandsons could help build things too and love it. Thank you so much. God bless you.

Wow, I can so relate to your story! My Dad could do anything…..create, design, build…you name it. Like yours, my Dad was a great mentor and I learned so much. After my Mom died, he came to live with me & my family. As long as he could, he helped wirh DIY projects; however, my favorite was one from college days. My parents let me paint/antique my mahogany bedroom furniture. What a fun learning experience! Later, we restored it back to the original finish.Using many tools wirh these projects, I developed & enhanced my own carpentry skills. Happy Father’s Day!
Kelly Roberson says
My favorite DIY was when I refinished a side table I found at Goodwill for $5! But one I’m currently in the process of starting is a wooden pallet fence for my back yard. These tools would come in handy for this project!
Linda Knowling says
Honestly, I have never done a DIY project! Thats why I’m here, to get ideas and learn! We are getting ready to redo our L shaped living, dining, kitchen area and some inspiration! There will definitely be some hammers, nails and power tools involved and we are kind of clueless….pretty sad at 50+ yrs old! Lol……this is the 1st time we are attacking this area of the house in 26yrs! More info than you needed, haha…..but i think my favorite power tool will end up being a nail gun! I want a wood plank ceiling!!! Have a great day!
Kristen says
I just have to say what a touching story. I couldn’t make it through without tearing up.
My favorite diy project I’ve done so far was repairing and installing flooring in our rental unit. I got to take a risk on someone else’s home, but it turned out pretty nice and it was fun!

A few lessons learned along the way! And not as easy as it sounded in theory. LOL! But the DIY fence in the back yard is done! 🙂 Feeling accomplished! 🙂

My favorite is the metal tiles on the ceiling. Hard to pick I love so many. My father told me “You can fix anything just take your time and figure it out”. Pretty close. I love all kinds of crafts. My husband helps me when it comes to electric tools but I would love to learn and have my own tools!! I appreciate his help but I have to wait when he has the time. I’m not very patient sometimes so I would DIY if I had my tools. My last project is for our family reunion over the 4th if July and I made table deco of flag clothespin wreaths. Fun!
Janeen Ebert says
My favorite DIY was a simple one. I painted an old 8 pane window turquoise to hang over my daughter’s bed….against dark grey walls. I was afraid because it was so heavy. Besides how sleek and good it looks, my favorite part was the French cleat hanging method that I used. So glad I did it!
Dolly Wilberg says
Love all the recycled projects from cans to hand drill handles to pallet projects. Have loved doing them. Thanks

Judy Lamason says
I especially love your farmhouse floors. I am considering laying them in my mobile home.
Gaylea says
My favorite DIY is working next to my Dad, fixing up my childhood home which was built in 1907. We started out changing a dark blue bedroom scraping the ceiling, stripping out the carpet, sanding the walls. To make it a beautiful pale yellow sewing room with original wood floors for my Mom. The we stripped out the carpeting into the hallway, did a few repairs and replaced some planks to have the original wood floors back again. We are in the process of taking windows out one by one replacing the ropes and weights and putting in dual panes for better insulation. We wanted the windows to stay as original as possible, did not want vinyl replacement windows on this beautiful old house. We have also stripped out the carpet from all of the downstairs rooms and sanded and varnished the beautiful old wood floors. It is still a work in progress but one I enjoy, because I get to do it with my Dad. I am the oldest girl in the family, but always joke with him that I am his best son handyman.

My favorite diy project would definitely be the shelter in the backyard made from old doors. I would love to do this! Unfortunately, I have no electric tools. My dad always worked second shift. I never really had the opportunity for him to teach me how to fix and do things. I get so inspired when I see your post everyday! It makes me what to be creative! I just bought my first house. It was built in 1926! It has original hardwood throuout! Including pocket doors! There are so many things I want to do ti make it my own space! I am really excited to get started! Thanks for your great post! I am very excited about the new studio and live sessions! Can’t wait! Congratulations on it! Thanks again for being so inspiring!

Love your ideas you share. Especially love that they don’t cost an arm/leg to do them. Keep up the good work!

My favorite projects are trying to make wall hanging and shelves from old pieces. I love when things are used, loved and have character. And nowadays they are expensive to buy that way so I try to find ways to make useful shelves, etc. And I will be moving soon with my new love and his son, as well as my son. So, I am really excited to try to decorate”our” new home.
Mindy Drummond says
My favorite DIY project was 24 years ago (yea I’m old LOL) I decided to paint my kitchen cabinets. That was before it was a “thing to do” so everybody thought I was crazy, even the guy at Home Depot told me it was a stupid idea. But it came out great and we loved it and everybody that saw it thought it was awesome because it was so different than anything they had ever seen. 🙂
Bridget Garmon says
I found an old trunk at a flea market, removed the canvas cloth from the outside, sanded and stained the wood. It makes a beautiful side or coffee table! I love the ideas I get from your blog and really love the quote you cherish from your dad. It’s such a great motivator! I wish you continued success!
Yvette says
My favorite DIY was 35 years ago. It was my very first house on my own. I was only 18 years old and it was just a rental but the home owner a friend, allowed me to do what I wanted. With the help of a couple sweet boys we collected boards from old barns and gathered up used red bricks from anywhere we could. Let the kitchen reno begin. Bricks were shaved and not at all even lol, which added to the character. Cupboards were painted and and the ancient tiles removed from the floor. When we were done I had barnwood walls, brick backsplash, crisp white cupboards and a barn wood floor. Unfortunately I have no pictures just the memories of the summer days scouting and collecting material. The roller (paint rollers) wars and endless evenings working. The belly laughs I can still hear. My cheeks hurt when I think about it now. That is my favorite DIY. Maybe not my best work ever but absolutely my favorite!

My favorite diy is my master bath. We gutted it to the studs and started over. I taught myself to tile and although I see the mistakes I dont think anyone else does. A friend once told me that you can redo something yourself, and even if you mess up and have to do it over you still will come out cheaper and you’ve learned a new skill. Thanks for the chance yo win the tools, I’ve worn out mine lol!
diane williams says
l never had much money so I learned real fast. that l could make my own things to decorate with. making something for nothing has become my way of life .the biggest thing has been just taking the time to figure out how to make it and then doing it. from redoing a table or fixing a chair or building shelfs. l know l can do it !
Gina Kleinworth says
I’m so sorry about your dad. Those first holidays without them are always difficult. Prayers for your strength as you go through those moments.
As for the projects- my favorite is my vintage inspired lighted shop sign I made for my studio. It was simple, still took longer than I thought it would- but turned out just as I had hoped (which usually isn’t the case) 🙂
Hugs to you Gina

I am so sorry for the loss of your father. I still miss mine, even after 19yrs. I love to diy and my favorite project was a cabinet with a hutch I made out of built in cabinets from an old trailer that was being demolished. The wood was not high quality but after we had reconfigured the cabinets and painted them a light blue it was beautiful. We used it on our porch!

Removing walls and placing headers to open up an old farmhouse during an update.
Purchased a 90 year old farm house that had not had any renovations since the 70’s.
Will be working on it for the next year or so… Will be a labor of love.
To make the $$$ go further to get the biggest bang for my buck, I will have to “DIY” as much as is possible.
Let the acquisition of power tools commence!
Marcie says
My favorite DIY is the home address sign my husband and I made out of bi-folding doors from my childhood home. It is painted in red, white, and blue with large metal numbers. It looks awesome in front of the pergola he made. Everyone always comment on it. My husband is the best father. He has shown all three kids to change oil, change broken sprinkler heads, electrical work, you name it, he’s taught them…except painting…he hates painting. That’s were I come in!
Lynn Russell says

Hello,
I do not have a favourite DYI project using power tools because I do not have any power tools. I have ideas though. I would like to build a bench for my front porch. I would like to build a couch for my living room. I would like to build bird feeders and give them to other people along with some bird feed. I would like to build a small cabinet for my craft supplies. I would like to go and help on projects for the community, the environment or other important volunteer projects.I would like to build small cases that hold books and place them at bus stops and around the town, even in the park, so that people can take a book if they want to read and bring it back later or leave a new book.
I also would love to have a small drill for making some of my other projects.
Thank you for this opportunity to win power tools.

Hi. I’m new to your blog/fb page. Lovin’it! My favorite DIY project was making 2 adirondack chairs out of alder wood for my brother and sister-in-law to set on their cabin deck. I surprised them with these at Christmas many years ago. They’re still enjoying them. My love for woodworking/dyi projects stems from the men in my family; my dad was always tinkering in his shed with hand tools (no electric or battery operated then) and my brothers were carpenters, builing homes. My most recent dyi was building a 500 SF deck. I love diy! 🙂

I don’t have just one favorite because like you I learned from my father and m6 3 brothers they were in building as there business then I met my husband my soul mate he was a electric by trade. We shared so many projects together. But my dad passed my husband passed my brothers are so far away my projects now are done alone or occasionally my daughter it would mean so much to win this so we have new tools that work to continue our fun!!!!
Dianne Ward says
My favorite DIY project was when my husband and I added on a new kitchen, enclosed a patio into a sun room, and added two walk-in closets, two dressing rooms and a bathroom to our home a few years ago. The footing & foundation was hired out to a contractor, but everything else we did ourselves. My dad and both brothers are builders and master carpenters, so I always knew I could do the same thing. It took us about 8 months, but it was worth it. I personally did all the chair railing and crown molding using a radial arm miter saw (loved that thing), sanded all the drywall mud, helped hubby install drywall, did all the painting and paper hanging. Hubby did all the electrical and plumbing. I helped with the framing and our son installed the shingles on the new roof. I love using the power tools. There is no limit to what any woman can do when she sets her mind to it.

I had an old dresser & chest of drawers that I bought when I was still in my teens…it looked old & tired; but I didn’t want to get rid of it just to go out and buy new! So; I painted it just slightly off-white & now I love it again!! (I am turning 64 in August so you know it’s “old”!!) I try to hang onto things instead of replacing. My old metal outdoor bench is now looking quite spiffy in a robin’s egg blue! Even my (plastic) lawn chairs got a paint job. I don’t have “tools” so mainly I repaint….although I did build storage shelves in my basement using a manual screwdriver!! Winning some power tools would really be the cat’s meow!!

The back part of my house burned in January 2002, I did the gutting, rewiring, installing outlets where they weren’t any, enlarging my closet, sliding glass closet doors, etc. But I think my favorite DIY project was when I built my deck. I only had a cement stoop out my back door, so I started the deck there and wrapped it around the back of my house, that was in 1999, now I need to replace some boards after I get my privacy fence built this summer. No panels just using my own boards and I am truly in need of a new drill! I love my power tools and after awhile they start getting old and worn out, I would welcome any new ones to my home 🙂
Mary Campbell says
My favorite DIY was refinishing an antique vanity. I couldn’t bring myself to cover the beauty of the wood with paint so used colorful tinted stain to highlight inset pieces and darken the rest.

My favorite DIY project so far has been painting our closet concrete floor to look like wood and rebuilding the closet shelves using old barn wood. (My side of the closet fell and that is how this diy project came to be.)

My favorite DIY project is redoing the hardwood floors in my home. It was built in 1836 and the original walnut floors have all had to be stripped down of 2 layers of horrible paint. What a chore!!!!

I am getting ready to build an 8 x 12 porch on the back of my mobile home. It will be the first thing I have ever built by myself! My front porch was built by me and my daddy. He passed away 6 years ago so I have had to learn to do things for my self.

I am currently making a headboard out of an old door I found on my grandparents property in Arkansas. A coworker gave me 2 glass telephone conductors that I am using for the lights. And I actually need a drill to be able to attach the lights on the old door! It’s the next step.

I’m sure this was a bittersweet post to write, so hugs to you.
My favorite DIY I think is the 2 x 4 farmhouse style table we recently built. My Dad actually purchased it from me.

I am in the process of fixing up my house to put it on the market. I’m tired of paying a house payment plus I just retired. My son and wife is giving a small piece of land on their acreage. My plan is to build a tiny house on it. I’m divorced and don’t need the 3 bedroom full basement home. I think the most memorable thing I’ve built was a wooden rocker for my grandkids. The sides were curved to rock. They loved it. The three of them are all over 21 and the rocker went to their cousin.

My favorite was a 100 year old house that my husband and I bought. It was in sad shape. We were young and poor, so everything done in house was diy. The kitchen was the biggest adventure, but we did it!

Favorite DIY project, tough one for me! I dabble in so much rather I’m good at it or not. I’d have to say building things from what I find, ex Christmas trees from pine cones or painting on an old glass frame and adding textures. Growing up w/o my father I worked in hardware pretty much all my life so I learned plumbing very well and do actually enjoying it!

My favourite DIY project was making a garden screen for my fence with my 21 year old son David last year. We sat down and designed it,chose the materials, cut it out and put it together and it looks amazing. 2 months later my son was killed in an accident, but I can now look at that screen everyday and cherish that this is something we did together

My favorite DIY project was helping my daughter makeover and repurpose all her furniture for her 1st post college apartment! Now I’m ready to tackle some projects in my own home!

Great story. Thanks for sharing. My favorite DIY project was hanging a pot rack with lighting over a kitchen island. My Dad has back issues so he couldn’t help only give instructions. So me and my son spent two days trying to get that thing up. Problem was we couldn’t get the fish tape to connect with any available existing lighting. Finally had to cut a hole in the ceiling. Longest two days of my life but the outcome was so awesome. I’ve learned so much from my Dad. He moved to California a few months back and I hate that I can’t call him up to show my latest project but he loves my Facebook posts and continues to encourage me and give me advice.

I love all your posts, I’m a big farmhouse style lover. But I have to say my favorite post was How your erased your teenagers entitlement. I have 3 daughters and have lived through 2 teenager years so far , with 1 last one to survive. I am told each day how much she hates me. I commend you for riding out this and shifting the attitude. Looking forward to giving it a try. Thanks for the chance to win the power tools as well. They are both life changers in my eyes! Happy Father’s Day to your dad in heaven-he’s looking down on you with pride.

My favorite DIY project to date was doing our daughters room. We shabby chiced the whole room, painted it pink, and decorated with fun items. The funniest part, was in the right sunlight the room sent hues of pink from one end of the house to the other! Lol!

Our DIY is mostly in the painting area of walls and furniture, but my fave was when we built gates for our deck. Daycare regulations required locking gates, but nothing looked right with the deck we have. We ended up building gates that were an exact match for a seem less look. Will be doing more DIY so I can get the exact look I want on projects and save money. Win-win!!!

When I was just married, my dad and I built a deck on my little mobile home. . It took us a whole Saturday but the time spent with him was amazing. . The deck was beautiful, the mobile home not so much… lol. But I’m so thankful for our time spent together..he’s been gone so many years and I still miss him so much…Happy Father’s Day in Heaven! Love you Daddy

I made a ruler growth chart last weekend to keep track of our son’s height. We just bought a small house and the thought of leaving those wall marks in our old place broke my heart. Now we can transfer the height marks onto the ruler and take it with us to our new home.
