When is the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? I try to do it once a week, but last time I ran out of makeup brush cleaner. So I figured out how to make my own… and luckily I already had all the ingredients right in my own bathroom. I was super impressed with how well it worked – but to be sure, I asks my girls (16, 22 and 25) to each try it and they all loved it, too! Now we make a double batch to clean our brushes once week.
DIY Makeup Brush Cleaner

Ingredients:
- 1 cup distilled water
- 1/2 cup witch hazel
- 2 tablespoons baby wash (or shampoo)
- 1/4 teaspoon argan oil (or olive oil will work)
Directions:
Pour all of the ingredients into a clean bottle, adding the oil in last. Shake well each time before using.
To use the cleaner, put a small amount in the bottom of a glass container (I used a drinking glass) and swish around several times to work the cleaner through the bristles. Rinse the brush thoroughly under cool water, then towel dry on a soft, clean cloth. I also like to lightly blow dry the brush, I feel like it helps keep it even softer.
So why clean your brushes regularly? 1) It helps your makeup go on better. It will appear more even and will last longer. 2) Preventing breakouts. You use the brush, it picks up oils from your skin. Next time you add more makeup to the brush then reapply next time, it builds up over and over again. With time, the extra oils actually create more breakouts – and no one likes that! 3) It helps your brushes last longer. Mine were a big investment (as were yours) – so take care of them and they will last much longer.
Just take a few minutes once a week to use the makeup brush cleaner on your tools once a week – it’s absolutely worth it.
thanks, i really appreciate this. i have been meaning to buy some brush cleaner but i would much rather make it!
I never thought of using anything but soap and water. Interesting.
I thought the same – but the witch hazel helps with bacterial growth and the oil keeps your brushes softer. Kinda weird, but it works 🙂
Gina,
Why Argan oil? Would Avocado or Jojoba work too? And what do you think of using Castille Soap for a more natural approach?
Yep, you could easily use another oil – I just had Argan oil on hand. And you could definitely use Castille soap – I just happened to have baby wash on hand, too.
Thanks for reading!
Can I use this cleaner on my beauty blender?
Yep! We use it on ours and it works great.
I can’t wait to try this technique on my brushes. 🙂
It works great Ana, good luck!
