Apparently the schools of the south tend to start back sooner than the rest of the country, and since we’re smack dab in the middle of the south, our kiddos start back in less than a week. I’m going to miss summer something fierce, and I’m not looking forward to backpacks being strewn all over the place. So I decided to try to head off the problem at the pass with some new DIY backpack hooks. Maybe, just maybe, they’ll use them to keep their backpacks in place. Want to try them yourself? Let’s make it!
For each hook you want to make you’ll need three galvanized plumbing parts:
1) 3/8″ 90 degree elbow
1) 3/8″ two inch nipple
1) 3/8″ floor flange
You can buy larger pieces, but honestly they’re a lot more expensive and it won’t change the function, so just go with the cheaper option. All total they’re around $7 each to make. Not bad, huh?
Besides the galvanized parts, you’ll also need:
4 screws (check your hardware section to find ones that will fit the holes)
4 anchors (if needed)
Pen for marking
Level (if you’re hanging more than one)
Drill
Drill bit for the size screw you use
Phillips head screw driver bit
Start by screwing the elbow onto the 2 inch straight part.
Next, put the flange on the wall, mark it where you want it to be, pre-drill the holes, then attach it to the wall (using anchors if necessary.)
Then screw on the first part you put together onto the flange and you’re done. It seriously only takes about two minutes to make the whole thing.
Here’s hoping that these backpack hooks mean that it will be just as easy to get my kiddos to use them on their own. But I’m not holding my breath on that one – haha!

Hey Gina great idea but my “baby” will be 32 this month and no grandchildren so I don’t need this but I love what you did. Do you have any ideas on how to hang cast iron pans? I have a few and I would love to showcase them but have absolutely no idea how to do it. Thanks Gina.

What a great idea! I’ll be doing this out in the garage as well to hang work coats as well in my son’s room to hang his stuff.

I love this idea and they are heavy duty enough to hold a backpack full of all those books and other things that every child has. Great idea.
