The writer in me can’t seem to get enough quotes: song lyrics, book quotes, movie lines – they’re all up for grabs. It’s a fun way for me to bring the things we love into our home in a very personal way. When I decided to create a little sign to go above our bar, I knew I wouldn’t want something ordinary. So I thought long and hard and finally thought of a line from my favorite movie, The Holiday. When Jude Law crashes in on Cameron Diaz’s first night in London, she asks if he’d like a drink, so which he tells her that there’s brandy then asks, “Fancy a glass?”
I started with a few supplies:
A piece of 1×8 board, cut to 24 inches – and paint washed with gray paint
Adhesive vinyl (I used this kind from my partners at Happy Crafters)
Vinyl transfer tape
I plotted out the words in the Silhouette software, using the Bombshell Pro font. Then I cut out the words in vinyl.
Using a pick, I peeled out all of the lettering, leaving behind the negative area.
Then I used transfer tape to put over the entire piece.
Then I put it onto the board and used a razor blade to trim it to fit the sign perfectly.
Then I peeled the paper off the back of the vinyl, leaving the vinyl onto the transfer tape.
I aligned the transfer paper with the board, then applied it on and smoothed it all out with a scraper to make sure the vinyl adhered well. Then I peeled off the transfer tape.
Then I carefully painted on a couple of coats of paint. I let it dry then peeled off the vinyl to reveal the words.
I love a good sign – and I love a good bar – so put them together and I definitely love a good bar sign! Now, who want’s a drink?

What technique did you use to hang your sign on the wall? Did you put hanging hardware on the back of the wood? I just made a sign with an adhesive vinyl stencil too — and now I realize I’m not sure what’s the best way to get it up in the wall!

Love the idea, but did it take forever to cut out the letters with that little pick? (which one can get where?). Time is a consideration for me and this is the only thing holding me back at from pursuing this great project.

You cut them with a Silhouette machine and just use the pick to pull the letters out. It only takes a minute to do it, it goes really fast.
