Hot crab dip is one of those recipes that I only pull out on special occasions… but I ALWAYS have to pull it out on special occasions. New Years Eve, birthday parties, basically whenever we have a big get together, my family insists that I make hot crab dip. I rarely ever make it unless we are having a crowd over, a) because it can be pretty pricey to make and b) it makes quite a large batch. Yet any time I do take the time to make it, there are never any leftovers gone to waste.
Hot Crab Dip Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, finely grated
- 1/2 cup parmesean cheese
- 8 oz. of sour cream
- 2 (8 oz.) packs of cream cheese, room temperature
- 1 stick (1/2 cup) of butter – room temperature
- 1/2 cup of finely diced onion
- 1 tablespoon grated garlic
- 2 cans of lump crab meat (drained) – or 4 oz. from the fresh seafood counter
- salt and pepper to taste
- chives for garnish
With a hand (or stand) mixer, whip together the butter, sour cream and grated garlic. Once incorporated, add in the onion. Using a spatula, fold in the crab meat, cheddar cheese, salt and pepper, until all mixed together.Put in a casserole dish and sprinkle on the parmesan cheese, bake at 375 degrees for 50-60 minutes, until golden bubbly. We love schmearing it onto Hawaiian rolls, Italian bread, or even eating it with tortilla chips – YUM!
So the next time you want some hot crab dip, either for a crowd or for yourself, try this version. It truly is the best one we’ve ever tried (and we’ve tried a lot of them!)

Just got back from Red Lobster and thought I was stuffed…………..but now I seem to be craving crab dip! Hmmmm, wonder whose fault that is.
This sounds awesome. I love anything with crab meat, melted cheese, and hot sour cream, so I guess I’ll have to make this over the weekend. I think I’ll make some homemade pita chips to dip in it.
Have a great new year!
