There’s a little secret that I wanna spill today… gorgeous pillows are dead simple to make. If you can sew a line, you can learn how to make pillows in about 15 minutes. Crazy, huh? Guess what – that’s not my only secret. You know those drool worthy designer fabrics…. I have another secret on how to use them and save money at the same time. Double whammy of pillow secrets today, my friends.
So let’s talk fabric: You only need to buy enough for the fronts. Say whaaa??? Yep, the party’s on the front, yo.
For the back, we’re going to use a cheaper fabric – and you get to choose. I like Lenda curtains from Ikea – but drop cloths totally work, too! Either way, you’re using the utilitarian fabric on the back, pretty stuffs on the fronts, m’kay?
Here’s what you’re gonna need:
Use the pretty fabric to cut the 24 x 24 (or 16×16 or 18×18 – whatevs) for the fronts… then use the cheaper, plain fabric to cut two smaller pieces for the back. On one long edge, you want the seam or selvage edge, so you have less work to do – see there, another cheat!
For my pillows, I used some gorgeous ikat from Online Fabric Store – and then put the back on top, right sides together, then layered the backs on top of the front. You want the outside edges all lined up, but the flaps on the back to overlap. Pin it all up, then sew a seam all the way around with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. That’s it. Super simple lesson on how to make pillows, huh?
Thanks to Online Fabric Store for partnering with me on this post!
