the cheater’s secret for how to make pillows

There’s a little secret that I wanna spill today… gorgeous pillows are dead simple to make. If you can sew a line, you can learn how to make pillows in about 15 minutes. Crazy, huh? Guess what – that’s not my only secret.Β You know those drool worthy designer fabrics…. I have another secret on how to use them and save money at the same time. Double whammy of pillow secrets today, my friends.

how to make pillows

So let’s talk fabric: You only need to buy enough for the fronts. Say whaaa??? Yep, the party’s on the front, yo.

For the back, we’re going to use a cheaper fabric – and you get to choose. I like Lenda curtains from Ikea – but drop cloths totally work, too! Either way, you’re using the utilitarian fabric on the back, pretty stuffs on the fronts, m’kay?

Here’s what you’re gonna need:

how to make pillowsUse the pretty fabric to cut the 24 x 24 (or 16×16 or 18×18 – whatevs) for the fronts… then use the cheaper, plain fabric to cut two smaller pieces for the back. On one long edge, you want the seam or selvage edge, so you have less work to do – see there, another cheat!

how to make pillowsFor my pillows, I used some gorgeous ikat from Online Fabric Store – and then put the back on top, right sides together, then layered the backs on top of the front. You want the outside edges all lined up, but the flaps on the back to overlap. Pin it all up, then sew a seam all the way around with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. That’s it. Super simple lesson on how to make pillows, huh?

how to make pillowsFlip it out, iron it well, stuff your insert and enjoy your 15 minutes of fame work.

We’d design & measure together, put a lovely beef stew in the crockpot (for 2 families!), I’d woman the sewing machine & Becky would make the gin & tonics! Some ironing and…voile’, curtains done! Thank-you for the opportunity to share some fun today! Your blog inspires me everyday to add some whimsy to my home…or LIFE!!! Take care! Chris

I really need curtains for my craft room. I also need to make a window seat with pillows for my kids’ bedroom. We built their book nook using pieces from our old bed frame. The kids won’t read there because it is still solid wood. I can’t blame them. I am completely pattern obsessed so fabric always makes me say, “Oooooh.”

Hi, love your choice of vibrant fabrics! I decided a few years back, that I liked the idea of having tartan plaid pillow covers for Christmas on all of my family room and morning room sofas . Let me just say that sewing’s just not my thing…especially since I had about 8 covers to make!! So, I had this idea to use large tartan dinner napkins for the pillow covers, sewing up the edges along the outside seam of the napkin so they still looked perky and used Velcro strips along the one side to close them. Easy on, easy off, especially since I had about 8 covers to make. I’ve had these for years now and they still look as good as when I made them. And no-one believes I made them–they look THAT good!

Nice idea. Just yesterday I used a dress from Salvation Army to make the fronts of 2 matching pillows, and a scrap of upholstery fabric for the back. A reversible pair.

Your 24-inch formula means we have to buy just 2/3 yard of gorgeous $ fabric we Love, AND have some left over!

I need to make a few more pillows, too, for my livingroom area. It is so bleak without pillows, but until I can get nice material, I’d rather go without!!!! She loves her dolls, to change outfits and dress them up. Parents on very limited budget, can’t spare much for ready-made doll clothes, and lots of new little outfits for the dolls at Christmas would make her day and keep her believing in Santa a bit longer!!!
