Make this: Quick Drop Zone

At some point nearly every day in my house, someone will be roaming around asking everyone in sight, “Have you seen my keys?” Sometimes it’s a laid back quest, other times it’s a mad dash to get out the door. Right after said person finds their keys, the very next question is “Where did I put my sunglasses?” Since I’ve been on a mission to get my home more organized, I figured it was high time that I solved the problem, and make this quick drop zone.

This month’s partnership with Lowe’s is a seriously easy project – one that you can make in about 15 minutes of hands on time. Ready to make it? You will need:

A piece of 12 inch by 16 inch wood (I used oak for durability) You can make it longer if you’d like.
Quick dry stain – Minwax Express Color seriously rocks
1/2 inch pipe straps (I used 3 – you can use more)
3 hooks for the keys
A pack of Command picture hanging strips
A drill with a small drill bit
Some small screws
Paper Towels
Rubber Gloves

First, stain your piece of wood and sit it aside to let it dry. The Express Stain is easy to use, just spread it on and wipe it off. I used Onyx, which gave the oak board a great color.

Next, measure board and place out your pipe straps where you’d like, then pre-drill the holes. Do the same for the hooks below the straps.

Next, use the screws to put the pieces onto the wood. Last, use the Command strips to hang, putting one on each end and using them per the instructions on the pack.

If you’re not using Command products, you should be! No, they’re not paying me to say it – and they are seriously my favorite new find in a long, long time. I’m verging on an obsession with them, I tell ya.

After you hang up your quick drop zone, then you just have to remember to put the keys and sunglasses in place… but that’s a whole ‘nother conversation!

*This post is in partnership with Lowe’s, but all ideas and opinions are 100% my own (who else could come up with this craziness?!?)

What a great-looking solution! We don’t have a lot of wall room in our mudroom, so we’re using a cafe rod: http://www.dejongdreamhouse.com/2012/04/project-of-day-dont-forget-your.html

I need one of these. Seriously, when my adult son stops by he always leaves a pair of sun glasses at our house. I always pick them up, set them aside. But, if I had one of these he would have a place to leave them and I wouldn’t have to think twice about them.

I love this, but want to send a warning to your readers: we were recently robbed, and the person found an extra key on a hook similar to this hanging in my kitchen, and helped themselves to my husband’s car! The police believe it was someone who had been in our home before. We had done a remodel in the last year, so whoever it was knew the key was there. They picked the lock on our back door, came in the middle of the night while we were sleeping and even went in our basement where our daughter and grandson were sleeping! We didn’t hear a thing! If you have someone in your home, look for things like that that are out in the open and perhaps relocate them while the worker is there…and make sure that whoever you use does background checks on their employees.
