Occasionally I will get an email (or maybe even a phone call) from a friend about where in the world I go to find ____________. Maybe the blank is curtains, or fabric, or candlesticks, or chairs. There’s about a million and one places out there, but there are a hand full that I find myself going through when I’m looking for just the right thing.
- Ikea – either online or in store. I do have to make sure that A) I don’t need it quickly {because it’s a 6 hour drive each way for me} and B) if it’s available online or instore only. Their website is a little tricky for ordering, but it’s a good virtual catalog of the options available in store. Good thing I have a friend who will pick up small things and ship them in case of a decorating “emergency”!
- Etsy – but of course you knew I was gonna say that. Seriously though, almost anything you could ever want, and it’s all hand made. And, I’m all about supporting small businesses, and it doesn’t get much smaller than a mom working from home!
- Pottery Barn – website, paper catalog or store. They are all options that I have readily available. Now with my discovery of the outlet, I know that going to there for larger pieces is just a day trip away. Man, I love that store! The prices have dropped a lot lately, which is always good for the cheapskate in me.
- West Elm – A division of Pottery Barn, I love the quirky style. Oh – and there’s a West Elm section of the PB Outlet in Memphis – gotta love that! It’s great for accent pieces, but the furniture is a little too contemporary for my taste. But… it’s good to have options!
- Anthropologie – Quirky and cool – it just soothes my kitchy spot. The furniture is fun, but always well out of my price range (I’m just keepin’ it real). I get a lot of inspiration in the way they stage things – and some of the small accent pieces can make a big impact, even on my budget.
- Amazon.com – Yes, Amazon. You can find ANYTHING there – and I recently helped my friend Andrea find curtains for her new kitchen – for $39 a PAIR. Sweet! You have to be quite specific in your searches to wade through all the options – but the prices are amazing.
- Target – online or in store. I can always find something that I love, at a price I can afford. The quality is generally pretty good – and the clearance racks are the sweet spots for me. It’s like thrift store shopping – but in a nicer way 🙂
- JCPenney.com – ya know, the catalog folks. I am simply amazed how far their design has come, and the prices are quite nice, too.
- Walmart – online or in store. For basics the prices are usually the lowest you’ll find. I hate going to the store, A) Because it’s all the way on the other side of town; B) Way too many people there; C) There’s too much selection for my ADD brain to handle. If I look online, I can narrow down the search to just what I need.
- Hobby Lobby – For those of you who don’t live near one – did you know they offer online sales now? You can get the incredible deals that the southern set has been blessed with for years. From fabric and craft supplies, small furniture and decorating accessories, the frequent sales make for some great deals.
I know there are stores I missed. Like Kirklands… or Restoration Hardware….
This was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO helpful! Thanks!!
Your list is an excellent one and I like how you’ve summarized each with it’s strenghts. I love IKEA too, but mine is also about 6 hours away. (Might be a good things.) The only store I would add is TJ Maxx–I know they aren’t as good as they used to be, but I can still find some nifty things in there.
Best,
Susan
I just found this online shop called One Kings Lane it’s awesome- it’s like GILT.com but for home decor!
https://www.onekingslane.com/invite/saraharkanoff
For cheap seasonal decor or other small pieces, Christmas Tree Shops is great!!! Of course, if you hunt long enough or just get lucky, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Ross have some good deals too.
We shop at a lot of the same places! I also like Crate & Barrel and Z Gallerie.
Does anyone know if One Kings Lane ships to Canada? I don’t want to sign up to find out that they don’t offer shipping up north.
I love Etsy!
I like all the ones you mentioned and since Kirklands opened their online store I find myself going there a lot more often.. Especially when the sales are on.. thanks for sharing your list with us..

I was just asking my 4 year old daughter, this morning, “what is Mommy’s favorite store?” To which she replied Wal-mart. LOL! But really it’s Hobby Lobby. My next fav is Goodwill, but, they’re not online.

I love Ballard Designs and have a couple things from there, but unless it’s a special item (or on weekly sale) they can be pricey. I also order from The Company Store…good quality. Oddly enough I have some cute things come from Coldwater Creek. Yes, they are a clothing line, but they also have decor items too, sometimes on clearance.
OMG………where did you get those beautiful pillows on your sofa??? Did you make them? My eye went straight to them. Love, love them. ~Bonnie
All of the above plus HOME GOODS of course!
craigslist.com
ebay.com

Anthropologie – Quirky and cool – it just soothes my kitchy spot. No truer words have ever been spoken!!!! But just as you also said they are sadly NOT in my budget, but they do give me something to dream about at night. Yes, I will always be your Ikea hook up because a girl always needs a reason to go……now that I know about the food and Cinnamon rolls I have new reasons to want to make the trip!!!! Hope you are home and willing to put up with me today because I will be calling.
Talk to ya soon,
Cha Cha
Ballard, Marshalls, TJ Maxx…and of course all those that you mentioned! I just found out recently that we have a Hobby Lobby about 20 minutes away so I might check that out soon!
I am an Amazon addict!! I’m curious to check out Hobby Lobby though. We don’t have that in our area. Will be checking it out soon! Great guide!
I LOVE Williams-Sonoma, Home Goods, Stein Mart, Hobby Lobby, Crate and Barrel, Tuesday Morning, and some local shops….GREAT GUIDE—fun to learn!
Love me some Hob Lobs, and Home Goods! Whenever we visit my mom (5 hours away) I try to make a quick stop at Home Goods…okay it might be more like an hour, but love that store!
For in person, Ross and Marshalls are on my weekly list – you have to stop by frequently and just not get distracted because stuff changes over all the time. Online, Smart Bargains and Overstock are fabulous. Smart has more things like linens typically and Overstock more options on dishes, small appliances – I got all the Schoolhouse linens from Smart and have gotten lots of compliments already!
