If you’ve ever had to paint a ceiling, you’re probably laughing at the title of this blog post. Because you’ve been there. The mess, looking up for ev-ah and you’ve experienced the agony of painting a ceiling. Or at least I have. It’s one of the things I hate the most about giving any space a makeover. But if I’m going to give the walls a fresh coat of paint, the ceiling is going to get it, too. After painting my kitchen ceiling I learned a couple of things: A) you can paint a ceiling without making a huge freaking mess everywhere + B) you can also do it without getting a crick in your neck. Intrigued? Read on….
My secret weapon? HomeRight’s Paint Stick. Ya’ll. This. Is. A. Game. Changer. I’ve used them on walls before, but for some strange reason it never occurred to me to use it on the ceiling. Can you say, “duh”? Because I felt totally dumb for never using the thing on the ceiling before.
If you’ve never used the Paintstick before, you’re gonna love this: No pan, no mess. Repeat after me: no pan, no mess. (I think the DIY angels are singing!) It comes with everything you need, the stick, the lid, the roller, every stuffs. Oh – and the guard, that’s really important for the ceiling. Apparently my friends at HomeRight already knew it was a good idea to use this handy tool to paint the ceiling, because they put it in the box. See, I’m not real bright.
The reason you don’t need a pan is because you can suck up the paint right into the handle, then gently push it when you need more paint. Run out? No prob – just reload and keep on painting.
It was so fast to paint the ceiling that it actually took more time to cover the floor with paper than it did to cover the entire ceiling in my kitchen.
I will never whine about painting a ceiling again, pinky promise!
I’ve got more to share about my kitchen remodeling adventures, so stay tuned!
Thanks to my friends at HomeRight for partnering with me on this post. All opinions, ideas, words & photos are 100% my own, yo.
Dear the most darling shabby,
You have just saved my life, we are painting our ceilings tomorrow. I have scrapped popcorn till my wrist couldn’t take anymore! My walls are going to be Horizon by Benjamin Moore and my trim will be white. I am so lost on what to do, we have low ceilings! So, I don’t wanna screw this up!
Sincerely,
Under the ceiling and freaking out
I am freaking out about what color to paint it…I left that out.
At least I’m not alone in the ceiling freak out! Me personally, I’d paint it the same white as you’re painting the trim (but then I paint my walls, trim and ceiling all the same color – haha!)
Omigosh! I’ve never even heard of this before – thank you so much!!! I have so many ceilings to do that I’ve been putting off because I hate doing ceilings. I hope I can find this nearby.
Thanks Gina!
btw how easy is this to clean after you’re done painting??
It’s not too terrible, about like cleaning a paint brush. Just use the plunger thing to pull water in and push it out several times to clean the insides, then throw away the roller part (they sell refills).
Thanks Gina!!
Do the standard roller refills from Lowes, etc not fit?
I just answered my own question after reading more on their website. It makes sense that you need theirs with the holes! Derp! lol
Thanks for sharing this tip! I actually find painting walls sort of therapeutic – but ceilings are NOT! Maybe next time this will help!
I love my 10 foot ceiling but I hate painting them! There is no way you can do it from the floor. It’s still a pain using scaffolding, but I’m going to give the paint stick a try next time! I’m sure glad I am not the only one who hates to paint ceilings. 😉
This is a great tip and I will use it! Thank you!
OK – maybe you don’t get a crick in your neck because you get the work done faster – but isn’t the paint stick heavy? and you get an arm ache instead????
I didn’t have any problems – but I am stronger than the average woman, guess it comes from years of hauling hay 🙂
Oh my goodness! This may just change the face of our home renovation. We’re about 6 weeks from painting, but boy was I dreading painting the ceilings in our entire house.
Wow, this really is quite impressive! I’ve never heard of anything like it. Love your newly remodeled space as well. 🙂
Oh dear! Thank you so much for sharing this one. We are moving in to our own trailer house soon and it is in need of a fresh coat of paint. And I want white walls and ceiling. And thank goodness you share with us about PaintStick. Now I just hope that the store we are going to buy paint carries PaintStick. We really need to paint it before moving in. If not, I guess I will have to order it online.
They sell a similar tool made by Wagner at Home Depot. I used mine for the ceilings and it was so much faster and easier!
