I’ve never been a girl that gets all excited about tech stuff…. which is kinda weird since I’ve made a website my focus for over a decade, huh? But in all honesty, I’ve just never been the one who had to have the latest and greatest “tech gear.” I guess I’m old fashioned like that. But every once in a while we get to do an upgrade around here that makes our home a little less 20th century and bring it into the 21st century. Seeing as how we’ve been in the “new age” for almost two decades, I guess it’s high time that I caught up with the world a little.
So when my friends at Johnson Controls asked to send me a new GLAS smart thermostat, I was a little caught off guard. Because… confession: I’m not a huge fan of change. Of any sort. (Total side note: this is why my house has changed very little in the last year.)
But that’s where my sweet, beloved husband comes in. See, where I could care less about tech stuff – he LOVES it. He loves gadgets and gizmos of almost any sort. Which is why when I asked him if we should try it, his immediate answer was, “Ummmm… YEAH!” So that’s what we did.
And that’s how we came to try out the new GLAS smart thermostat. I’ve gotta admit, if I’m going to tackle any techy-type changes, then it’s gotta be from a company I can trust. And since GLAS was the original creator of the old school room thermostat 135 years ago (yep, that number is right… I googled it), I figured they must know what they’re doing. Score one for the trust factor.
So let’s chat about installing it: Honestly I don’t have any super cool tricks there. The instructions on the GLAS smart thermostat are super clear – we installed it in about 5 minutes. Well, honestly it took a bit longer, because I had to touch up paint behind where the old thermostat was. But once that paint was dry, then the actual installation was super quick and easy. Not much harder than changing a lightbulb.
Once you have it installed, it will walk you through all of the set up screens one by one – and you simply tap on the screen for your answer (pretty straightforward.) It’s actually very user friendly and it didn’t take me long to figure out how to make it do the basics. It will give you notifications on things such as air quality (telling you it’s time to change the filter). But if you wanna get realllllly fancy, it will connect with a Microsoft Cortana®, Google Home or Amazon Alexa and you can talk to it. Yep, it will respond to your voice. I swear, we are living in the age of the Jetsons, my friends.
On top of the fancy voice stuff, it will learn your patterns through smart technology and will optimize your system… which will result in saving you money on your energy costs. It’s a win/win.
All in all, I really like it. The sleek design is a kinda perfect modern for my farmhouse-loving heart, too. It definitely looks a WHOLE lot better than the little plastic box that is the staple of any HVAC system. It was a super quick upgrade that will save us money, make sure we have better air quality and is built to last.
