We’ve worked on the kitchen long enough, and to get the final piece in place, we have to replace our sofa. The current one we have is simply too small. So, I’m going to slip cover it and move it to the kitchen for a little seating area. I’ve been browsing here and there, trying to find the sofa that’s just right.
My first love was this one from Ikea. I really, really love it. I don’t love that it’s a 6 hour drive to go get it, though. But at $599, the price is definitely right!
Then I found this one at Big Lots. Yeah, I was amazed to find one there, too. At $360, the price was perfect, the fabric is amazingly soft, and since I’m going to be painting the walls a light color, I thought it might be a nice change to add in some darker furniture. And, since it’s a little larger than the Ikea one, it scores a few more points.
And then I found this one at Rooms To Go for $675 – definitely not the cheapest option. However, I loved that it had the shape of the Ikea sofa and the size of the Big Lots version.
I still haven’t purchased one…
but I’m thinking that I’ll be making a test drive trip at Rooms To Go soon 🙂
If you’re headed to BlissDom this week, shoot me an email, I’d love to meet ya!
See ya tomorrow from there 🙂

There must be something in the air, because I have had sofas on the brain lately, too. Even did a post about it last week, which brought out some really nice suggestions. The winner, so far, may be Lee Industries. We have Ikea 45 minutes from here, but I find the Ektorp to be a bit too soft to be comfortable to me. That Rooms to Go version is VERY nice. Definitely worth a test sit, I do believe.

Hi Gina, I think that they all look very comfy and love the idea of having a sitting area with a sofa in your kitchen!! XX00 Ciao, bella!

I love them all! I love the white the best but in mly home it would get dirty in a day! I do like the brown also and it would hide the dirt factor better. Decisions, decisions. I also have to get a new couch and can’t decide! I can’t wait to see what you get!

I purchased a couch from Ikea for around the same price. It was super cute and exactly the size I neeeded, however it was not comfy at all. The back of it was too short! I really like the last one you posted. It is a bit more expensive but then again this is something you will be using all the time so its okay to spend a little extra on such a major purchase! Good luck!

Great choices! I’m partial to the Ektorp since we just got one not too long ago. I love it! Plus, new slipcovers start at $50 (I think some go up to $100) and it’s super comfy. But a 6 hour drive is far! Will they deliver to you?
Sarita says
The Ektorp is totally worth the drive. I have had mine for a year and it still looks great! I agree with Jena, for $50 you can get a whole new look with a new slipcover!

Looking forward to seeing you at Blissdom!

Go visit Heather at Pretty Petals, she just did a review of her ektorp sofa and bought a beautiful velvet cover to go with it! karen…

Ooo, Gina, I think I’d be visiting Rooms to Go too! I like aspects of all three…guess I’d look at quality more than anything if it’s a piece you want to keep around for a long time.
Wish I could be at Blissdom to meet you! 🙂 Have a great time!!

I bought the Ikea white sofa last year and love it. (Ektorp) I bought an extra set of covers so I can change while the others wash. It is my favorite. I also have the chair and ottoman to match. The good thing is you can change the color when ya want. judy

Gina, I’m sure you’re counting the cost of the small difference from Ikea to Rooms to go, and realize you’ll spend more than the 76 bucks in gas or close to it, and without the hassle. I adore Ikea but it’s the same for me, the nearest is a few hours away, of not four. When I do go to replace my chairs I’ll make it a family visit trip and come home with them. Love your style. By the way, one bonus is the low cost extra covers ikea offers, can’t go wrong with that.

Hi Gina! OOOOhhhh how I love furniture shopping! We’ve had the ektorp sofa and chairs for 7 years now and still love them! Generally I prefer a look that isn’t what loads of other people have, but once you add your pillows and throws to a white sofa, it takes on a look that is distinctively you! Have fun!

Gina,
I’m all about being able to wash a sofa and with IKEA you can buy other color slip covers.
I decorated a house in Atlanta and we got all the colors for 2 different rooms in her house. My friend has had fun switching the colors when she wanted something different!
My IKEA will open next fall and I am so buying that same sofa!!

Ikea is so cute, but I have never sat in a piece of their furniture that was comfortable. At Rooms to Go you will probably get a whole lot more for your money ~ namely comfort. As far as looks go, you can’t go wrong with any of them. Have fun deciding!

I’m an Ektorper as well.
We have had our sofa, two chairs and big-ole ottoman (with nice storage)for several years, white on all (I can’t do color to save my soul) and they are a dream.
On occasion when we are not home (and the barricade is not up)something climbs up on sofa and something else on the chair and naps; I’m not mentioning any names 2 yellow Labs, I’m just saying. Pop them in the washer, line dry and they are good as brand new.
Feel free to email me if you have any particular questions.

Ikea sofas are not very comfortable but I really like the brown one! Looks more durable and will stay clean! I got a couch very similar to the brown one but in a light tan color and love it!
Roxie700 says
I have to tell you that the Ikea sofa will be a piece of junk. If you are looking for quality the keep looking. Nothing against Ikea, I have many of their items in my home. I am lucky enough to live very close to an Ikea. But their furniture is waffer board and it will not hold up to a family’s use.
Lorie Payne says
I have 3 of those IKEA sofas….2 regular size and one loveseat. The sofas are more comfy than the Loveseat, but I like them all. They are not the highest quality but with 5 kids, ours have lasted for 4 years so far. I love the white, because I take it off and bleach it; and it looks good as new. And if you ever need to replace your white slipcover, it’s only $49!
Whytney says
I agree with Lorie- I love my Ektorp sofas. The love seat is about 8 years old and the sofa is newer. I am ready for a new love seat, though, but for the price and the ease of washing it beat out the PBarn any day!

I have the couch from JCPenny, identical to the one in the picture. It’s my Pottery Barn-look for Less couch and I LOVE it! Plus, I can buy a slip cover from JCPenny for it and completely change it up! It’s a really good, sturdy (I have an 18 year old 250 lb son so it BETTER be sturdy!). I love my couch (I have the love seat, too and they look so nice in the living room! I didn’t like the striped pillows they came with so replaced those….

Awesome! The Ikea sofa was what we were looking at, but then a friend of mine got one and we realized that it was far too long for our space. Booo! Loved the look. I’m not sure how often you replace your furniture, but I would caution you on the Rooms To Go sofa. My last set came from RTG and all I can say is that I will never spend another penny in that store. Two adults who work full time outside the home and the sofa was trashed in less than 2 years (and it was also a slip covered piece – which was why I picked it – because it could be CLEANED easily). Anywho – we also looked at that Big Lots sofa! GMTA LOL We ended up going in a totally different direction though. You can see that on my blog! http://paisleypumpkin.blogspot.com/

Have you checked Craigslist? I found my Ikea Ektorp sofa and loveseat for $250, and they were like brand new. They had black slips, so I purchased white and I’m very happy with them. Good luck with your sofa venture.

I looove the one from rooms to go… however as I search the site I do not see it! It just looks sooo much more comfortable than the other two. Very soft and cozy looking. What is the name of the sofa? I have been lusting after one I found at this website.. http://www.cottagechicstore.com/item206239.ctlg. however as it is out of state and the price is unlisted (we all know what that means) I have been scouring the local furniture stores for something similar and that last option of yours is perfect! So is the price! so pleasepleaseplease let me know the name so I can hound my favorite roomstogo employee john about it! 🙂 Thank you!
