How to Make a Square Coffee Table

Some days I have the full intention to make something, then a little lightbulb comes on that changes the direction of a project. That’s what happened when I decided to make a square coffee table for our pool deck. And it made it about 11 thousand times easier.

Originally I had planned on taking some scrap wood from the project & building a square box, similar to a pallet, and put casters on it. But as we were cleaning up the scraps, etc. after construction was done, I had an aha moment.

Before we bought our current pool, we had a cheap one from Target – you know, those $300, 18 ft. kind with the metal pipe frames? We bought that one and used it for a few years before making a huge investment in a long-term above ground pool.

Because stepping out of the pool onto the ground isn’t my kind of thing, my husband built a little platform out of scraps to bridge the gap from our back porch to the pool (which were super close together.) This is how it looked upside down, just a couple of bits of 6×6 with some decking boards attached on top and at the ends. Super easy.

So I basically had this square platform that I knew would make a square coffee table in just a few minutes, by literally only putting 4 inch casters  I found on Amazon 0nto the bottom. (PS – that’s my affiliate link for the casters).

We predrilled the holes, then attached them with 1 1/2 inch long lag bolts to make sure it was sturdy.

After years of setting out in the weather, the wood has a texture and color that you simply can’t replicate no matter how hard you try.

The square coffee table fits in perfectly, and now it’s ready for more years of life right by the pool.

Tell me more about what kind of better pool you invested in? We have one of the cheap ones but I use it all the time, May-September to exercise in. I’d like to know about better options.

I am actually writing a blog post about it as I get so many questions about our pool, especially after I posted about our new pool deck makeover. I will fill you in on all of the details!
