The Look for Less: DIY edition

the look for less, diy editionHey, hey, hey – it’s Friday! That means, of course, that The Look for Less is back in action. This week is all about how to make your own versions of much higher end items.

Joss & Main mirrorLet’s start with this beautiful mirror from Joss & Main. While it’s really, really stunning, the $379 makes me a little queasy.

DIY rope mirror
My DIY version was actually not a knock off project, I just had an idea and a few months later found a similar mirror. You can make it yourself for about $25. Big price difference, huh?

dwell studios tray
Our next item doesn’t have an accompanying DIY – but it’s so easy that you can pull it off, I’m sure! This tray from Dwell Studios is $98. Ummm… you know with a thrift store tray, a little spray paint, and some scrapbook paper you could make this for less than $10. Need a tray? Next time you see one at Goodwill, just remember this one.

sweater pillows Pottery BarnAnd last, but certainly not least, is this idea from Pottery Barn. It’s not the most original idea, but I’m pretty sure you’ve probably got a shrunken sweater or two lurking the the back of your closet. Pull it out, make a pillow cover, and you’ve got a replica of their $49.50 pillow covers for practically nothing. And even if you have to buy a thrift store sweater, it’s still a great way to get the look for less.

Now, go get your craft on and save a little dough… Christmas is coming, too, ya know?

  5. No way! I just purchased a white sweater at Goodwill yesterday just to make pillow covers out of! Funny. Spent $5.50 and it should make two covers.

  7. These all look like great projects to do for next to nothing compared to the ones you'd purchase. Love the pillows.

  8. Great knockoff projects! I have a big oval mirror that is a cherry stain now that I'm dying to make over. Now I'm trying to picture it finished in rope! Have a wonderful weekend :)

  9. Oh, yeah gonna look for some sweaters and in those colors, too, they will be per-r-r-rfect to cover the pillows on my couch and loveseat that's been long overdue!
