Have I told y’all how much I love the cull cart at The Home Depot? Remember our farmhouse chairs we built last year? Yep, I find the best deals there. This week we took a little trip to get a few things, and the cull cart was stacked full of goodness. Among a bunch of good stuff, we bought a few dog-eared pickets for 50 cents each (granted, these are only about $2 every day.) Not long after we got home, my husband built some DIY flower boxes before I even knew what was going on.
So here’s the low down (because I missed the step by step photos – ack!) The only part that does not use pickets is piece 5.
- Pieces 1, 2 (the front & back of the box) are cut the same length.
- Piece 3 is cut 1 1/4 shorter than 1 & 2, because the board are 3/4 of an inch thick, and it will allow for the end pieces.
- Piece 4 (you’ll need 2 of them) are cut the same length as the width of pieces 1 & 2.
- Piece 5 is a strip of is a strip of the same boards we used on the railings of the porch, so it would hang over the edges of the “fence.”
- Piece 6 is a 1 1/2 inch strip of the same boards used the build the “box” part of the flower boxes.
Everything is glued together with exterior grade wood glue, then pin nailed the box part, and screwed together the cleat for hanging on the back of them.
Once our DIY flower boxes were done, we painted them with exterior paint and drilled holes in the bottoms for drainage (I did put a layer of scrap burlap in the bottoms to drain the excess but hold the dirt in.

I have some boxes that I have moved three times and I still love them. That is a great idea about the burlap. I have gravel in my own but that does NOT stop the dirt run. Now..why didn’t I think of burlap? xo Diana

These are so cute. My Hubby is a carpenter so he, or my son(he’s also a carpenter)could make these so fast. I will definetly be showing them this post! I love them all white.

Just Beautiful! I love window boxes. To me, they are the earrings of the house. We had them on the first house we built. I haven’t had them since, but I’m determined to get them on our house we own now, this summer. And, ironically, I suggested to my husband Sunday evening, that we could make a couple out of pallets. He wasn’t convinced. I am. Enough said. Have a great week!

Gina, you’re awesome, I’m going to do this. I have some that my Dad built me years ago and I put landscape fabric/mesh on the bottom of mine and drilled holes. But mine are now splitting and coming apart. Mine slant forward, so were probably more difficult to build. I will just make some simple ones like yours! Love it. Thanks for inspiring me.
