The bookshelf has been up for a while, but it looks so much better now that it’s painted Pure White by Sherwin Williams, just like all of the rest of the space. It took about 3 hours to paint it all, including the ceiling. Why oh why do I put off things for a year that can be completed in an afternoon? I dunno.
And then there’s the Schoolhouse Electric signs. Yes, I’m swooning again. When I first took a family survey, I got 3 no votes. Boo! I ordered them anyway. It’s that whole “Mama’s happy” thing. And this mamma is very, very happy!
It’s also kind of smart – now when someone comes over, if they need to find the restroom it’s a no-brainer. And the Private Sign? That’s Bre’s room. Trust me, no one wants to see inside the room of a 13 year old girl. It’s scary in there.
Back to the book shelf, which is actually a book/movie/board game shelf. It’s multi-functional, which is always a plus. These are the books we read, movies we watch and games we often play. I thought about adding a door… but there’s really not space for it. Then I thought about adding a curtain… but it would be more hassle to deal with. So I left it open. All the color makes me happy, anyway!
The top shelf is where we keep all our sentimental books/Bibles. These aren’t our every day use ones, but ones that belonged to Mr. SCC’s grandpa (the carpenter that taught him all he knows), one from my grandmother, another from my uncle. These are so special to us that the wanted a permanent home where they would be safe and sound, yet we would see them every day.
So here’s where I’m going to DIY geek out a little. I talk all the time about remodeling in a mobile home. Here’s my big trick. Ya know how white spray paint is the Botox of the design world? I think that caulk is the concealer. Mobile homes (and old homes) are never square. They are wonky and odd and weird. Caulk makes it all look smooth, even and perfect. Just caulk it. You’re welcome.
While we’re here, see that little piece of trim above the door? It’s there because there was only 1/2 inch between the bottom of the crown molding and the door header. Add a bit of molding, and it looks way better. One stick of it did all the doors in the space – a great way to add impact for only about $4.

Did you post anywhere about your hallway floor? I love it!
The vintage-looking signs look sooooooo awesome on your doors.

Your hall looks amazing!! Oh, and don’t feel bad. It took me 2 1/2 weeks to paint my small bathroom counter. Yep, 2 1/2 weeks!!!! Who takes that long? It should have been more like 2 1/2 hours. Oh well, it looks nice and clean white. Love it!!! Now on to the bathroom walls. See you in 2 1/2 monthes. ๐

Hi there! Just stumbled upon your blog, after having purchased some property with a 20 year old manufactured home on it. So great to see all your ideas! I want to turn it more into a “farmhouse”, but right now it is anything but! My question is you said you painted the ceiling, and as ours is “popcorn” too, what do you recommend? Roller or Spray gun? and if you say Spray gun, would you still if you had to buy it yourself? (I think I saw that you received one from an advertiser?)
Thanks so much for any tips!

Hi Lisa,
If you’re doing ceilings, I recommend using a HomeRight Paint Stick – I recently did a post about using it to paint our ceilings and it goes on super fast and isn’t messy at all. Hope this helps!

I have this exact (well close) hallway in my really old little (815 sq ft) house. The ceilings are low, and someone has really botched up remodeling it years ago. I have what looks like beams in my tiny hallway, and 5 doors, and a linen closet that isn’t finished. I did put up a “curtain” with an expandable curtain rod and a sheet. It doesn’t look bad, but it is awkward, and not really to my liking.
I like the idea of the bookcase in this little hallway. I could put it on the back of the furnace room door. I’m sure at one time this was a coat closet, but now it contains a very efficient heater and very little storage. You know I can stand up things like mirrors, card tables, things that are large but not very thick. At least they have a home.
Do you know how to put crown molding up on areas that don’t have exact 90 degree angles? Is there a link to a spot that could help with that? The Crown is in the living room off this little goofy hallway, and we are stopped at the doorway to the hallway. Need some help or ideas here. Thanks.
I’m so glad I found you.

I found the answer to my question about the weird angles for crown molding. It was in a “This Old House” magazine, Jan/Feb 2015 Page 97. I don’t know if you refer back to magazine articles you find, but this one answered the exact question I had. Hope this helps someone else. I have flagged it for myself, and I of course save all of these magazines, one of the “collections” I have.

Hey! I now this was forever ago, but I was also wondering about the floors. I saw your oct about the pine, stained Jacobean, but this looks different. Is it? Thanks!
Gina Luker says
It’s just because there isn’t as much light in there so it looks different. Thanks for stopping by!
