Office Makeover for $270

See how I transformed an entire office with only $270 and some change. Budget office makeover in just a weekend and under budget!

All week I’ve been sharing my decorating adventures from my trip to San Diego last week. There were lots and lots of hours put into 3 days, but it was totally worth it to get a space that my friend adores. Her favorite part (and mine!) was the office makeover. The most expensive room in the house – it’s also where she spend most of her time, since she’s a work at home Navy wife. I listened to what she needed, looked at what she had, and found some solutions that would work for her. Wanna see?

Most everything that we purchased for this space came from Ikea, including this sleek little metal frame. Since she’s a graphic artist, it made total sense to use one of her favorite prints as a little art work. For only $1.99, it had such great lines, don’t ya think?

We also bought the little succulents and pot at Ikea, as well as the lamp. She already had the orchid, so we sprayed a pot from her collection white to match everything else. I love the sleek glass lamp that has traditional lines, another Ikea find.

Notice the wall? It was my favorite color of the whole space, a smoky grey tone from Valspar called Nile. One quart was all we needed for the big impact of the accent wall.

We also purchased her new cabinet (on the right side) from Ikea. It stores everything she needs, then hides it away behind a stylish door. Lots of baskets & bins help keep it all organized. I installed caster wheels on the bottom of the cabinet, so it would be easier to pull it out if she needed to when she moves.

This was my only DIY for the space – and it was free (y’all know how I love free!) I took an old memo board that she had in storage and wrapped it with a yard of color chart fabric from Spoonflower, then stapled it all tight and secure on the back. She had the fabric in her supplies, since she designs fabric as a side job. I LOVE the impact it makes – and the price tag was right on the money!

We also purchased the rug from Ikea. I love this one – I actually have 2 of them myself 🙂 For only $20, it was a great addition!

Now she has a whole new space to work away, and hopefully be inspired by my design 🙂

Rug – Ikea – $19.99
Lamp – Ikea – $13
Shade – Ikea – $8
Succulents – Ikea – $4.99
Flower Pot – Ikea – $1.99
Cabinet (with door) – Ikea – $135
Wheels for Cabinet – Lowe’s – $3.96 each ($15.84 for 4)
Baskets (inside cabinet) – Ikea – $13.99 each ($55.96 for 4)
Paint – Lowe’s – Valspar Nile – $15.96

Total for office – $270.73

Total for all of the rooms combined:  $843.69 (plus an additional $100 in random supplies used in the 3 rooms) – GRAND TOTAL – $943.69.  Under budget – YAY!!!

Truly lovely! Oh how I miss Ikea… the closest one if just over 3 hours away which makes it cost prohibitive if we are going for a few items. But it sure does make for a nice mini vacation!!!!

Mine is about 5 hours away – so I completely understand! We go about twice a year, so there’s a LONG list by the time we make it – haha! I was in LOVE with the fact that hers was across the street – it was a dream world, I tell ya 🙂

Love! I looove this series you’re doing with your friends house and as an Army wife, we definitely have some of the same issues and I am bookmarking everything for the future. I cannot WAIT until we move somewhere with an Ikea. Ikea won’t even ship out here. Boo.

Thank you for being an Army wife! I’m always in awe of you wonderful spouses that sacrifice so much for us! Ikea is forever away for me, too – but I LOVE shopping there whenever possible.

Gina, this whole series has been a real pleasure to read. You’ve done wonders on a small budget, and I know your friend is so happy with her space!

You know what I like best about this series of posts? The fact that you CAN make a big difference with just a little bit of money. Because, honestly, just a little bit of money is what most people have to work with. Most of us are not the “I-want-to-re-do-my dining-room-so-I-bought-all-new-furniture-this-weekend” type. Most of us have constraints that we must work with every day–money, time, lack of tools, lack of affordable sources, etc. You’ve shown that with a little extra creativity and perseverance, it IS possible todo things that will make a big difference in our homes.

What we all NEED is inspiration and encouragement, and that’s exactly what you provide here at TSCC!!

I’ve been following all your makeovers for your friend’s apartment. She is so lucky to have you! This office is my favorite! What a fabulous idea to use a color chart (on fabric, no less) for art and inspiration. After all, what could be more beautiful and inspiring than gazing at all those colors everyday? I also really, really loved the bedroom makeover. Your spray painted coral on the lamps was genius, and the headboard was gorgeous. What a great week!
