The Greatest Lie Society has Sold Us

(AKA: How to unlearn the struggle & embrace ease)

Somewhere along the way, we were taught that life is supposed to be hard. That success comes from struggle. That rest must be earned. That if we’re not pushing, we’re falling behind.

But what if that’s not true?

What if ease isn’t laziness but alignment?
What if flow doesn’t mean inaction but trust?
What if the idea that hard work is the only way is just another outdated belief system designed to keep us exhausted and compliant?

You are not required to set yourself on fire to keep others warm quote written on a photo of a table with vintage candlesticks and champagne glasses.

The Myth of Struggle = Success

If you grew up hearing phrases like:

  • You have to work twice as hard to get half as much.
  • Nothing worth having comes easy.
  • No pain, no gain.
    Then you’re not alone.

Society—especially for women—has glorified struggle for generations. We’ve been taught that overworking is virtuous, that saying yes when we want to say no makes us good, that pushing through exhaustion is the right thing to do. But let’s take a step back. Who does this belief system actually benefit?

(Spoiler alert: Not you.)

When we believe that life must be hard, we subconsciously make it that way. We say yes when we mean no. We overcommit. We feel guilty for resting. We create our own resistance because we think ease is wrong.

But here’s the truth: Life is allowed to feel easy.

“Ease is not the absence of effort—it’s the presence of alignment.” — Gina Luker

You are not here to be tired all the time. You do not have to prove your worth through struggle. You are allowed to feel good right now.

Rewriting the Narrative: How to Lean Into Ease

If the idea of ease makes you feel uncomfortable—like you’re slacking off or doing something wrong—then this is for you. Let’s talk about some ways to start shifting into a softer, more aligned way of living.

1. Cancel a task that isn’t urgent.

Look at your to-do list right now. Is there something on it that doesn’t actually need to be done today? Maybe even something that doesn’t need to be done at all? Let it go. The world won’t end. You are allowed to reclaim your time.

2. Let yourself rest before you feel burnt out.

We’ve been conditioned to only rest when we’ve earned it—when we’re completely depleted and have nothing left to give. But what if rest was a form of self-respect instead of a last resort?

Try this: Take a break before you feel exhausted. Lie down for 10 minutes. Step outside. Make a cup of tea. The more you honor your energy, the more it will sustain you.

3. Swap your to-do list for something that fills your soul.

We spend so much time being productive that we forget to actually enjoy life. Today, replace one task with something that makes you feel alive. Read for pleasure. Dance in your kitchen. Start a creative project. Remember—joy is productive, too.

4. Trust that what’s meant for you won’t require force.

This might be the hardest one to believe. We’ve been so conditioned to think that forcing something is the only way to make it happen. But think back to the moments in your life where things just clicked. Where it all unfolded naturally. Where it felt easy. That’s alignment. That’s flow. That’s what you deserve more of.

Journal Prompt: Where Are You Resisting Ease?

Take a moment and reflect:

  • Where in my life am I choosing struggle when I could choose ease?
  • What’s one way I can allow things to flow instead of forcing them?
  • How would my life change if I trusted ease just as much as I trust effort?

I’m 71, in some ways I’m still a child trying to find where I belong in the world. My daughter would say that I’m still looking for the approval of my mother which will never happen. I’m trying to unlearn and let go of what I was told over and over again growing up. I’m seeking the strength I believe I had as a child. You and a few others are helping on that journey. Trying to reclaim my witchy self who’s been buried for years has been very slow going. Thank you for helping show the way.
