Is the US crumbling… or is it just the GOP? We’ve talked about the extinction burst. We’ve seen the tantrums. We’ve felt the fear rising as systems scramble to maintain power.
But let’s be clear about something:
The crumble isn’t the point.
The rebuild is.
If we’re not holding both at once – fighting to protect democracy while dreaming of something softer, wiser, and more just – then we’re not really preparing for what comes next.
We don’t just need destroy our country. We need a complete makeover.

Cracks in the Foundation: Signs of the System’s Faltering
1. Wisconsin’s Judicial Shift
In a landmark victory, Judge Susan Crawford won the Wisconsin Supreme Court seat, maintaining the court’s liberal majority. This election, the most expensive judicial race in U.S. history, saw significant opposition funding from Elon Musk. Yet, the voters chose the liberal woman in a fight for democracy.
Even in Florida where republicans did win, it was by MUCH smaller margins than anticipated. The GOP is losing their grip, and it’s causing them to lose their damn mind.
2. Elon Musk’s Retreat from Government
Elon Musk is set to step back from his role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). While the official reason cites the 130-day cap on government service, it’s actually the public outrage and his tanking company that’s probably at the root of it. Of course, he doesn’t want to admit he was wrong (narcissists never do) – but this has taken an emotional toll on him that he didn’t see coming. And losing that seat in Wisconsin was kind of the final nail in his coffin.
3. Federal Judiciary’s Pushback
Federal judges are increasingly issuing nationwide injunctions against overreaching policies. This judicial assertiveness underscores the checks and balances integral to our democracy.
4. Nationwide Protests
The “Hands Off!” protests have mobilized millions across the nation, uniting voices against authoritarian policies and advocating for the preservation of democratic institutions.

We’ve (kinda) been here before
After the Civil War, Reconstruction promised equity, representation, and a chance at healing.
But it was crushed under the weight of white supremacist violence and patriarchal backlash.
FDR’s New Deal took another swing, creating systems meant to support the “common good.”
But “common” still meant white. Still meant male. Still left entire communities behind.
Now, we’re watching it all shake again.
And history is whispering reminders… that we only hear if we’re willing to listen.
The tariffs tipping point (and what came next)
In the early 1930s, tariffs meant to “protect American business” backfired catastrophically.
The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act raised import taxes during the Great Depression, triggering global retaliation and economic collapse.
The result?
Public outrage. A shifting tide. And the rise of the Democratic Party for decades.
FDR didn’t just win an election – he won momentum. Because people were desperate for a government that actually served the people.
Tariffs are back on the table today. And so is economic instability.
But this time, we know better.
We can build better.
We can do it more efficiently, more inclusively, and more sustainably if we’re paying attention.
Because history doesn’t have to repeat itself.
If we learn from it, it becomes the foundation.
Democracy Is flawed – but vital
It’s easy to feel jaded.
To believe the system is too far gone.
To check out because it all feels too heavy.
But here’s the truth:
Without democracy, we don’t get to rebuild anything.
We don’t get to vote in leadership that centers compassion.
We don’t get to push back against authoritarian grabs.
We don’t get to challenge the systems from the inside out.
And yes, we have to fight.
But not just with protests and posts.
We have to fight with strategy.

Tangible ways to fight back (that actually work)
💥 Run for Local Office
Thousands of red-zone seats go uncontested because Democrats tend to shy away from hunger for power.
But what if it’s not about power—what if it’s about protection?
Every school board, every council seat, every judgeship matters.
**No seat should run unopposed in 2026. Not one.**
🗳 Vote in Every Single Election
Even the ones that seem small. Especially the ones that seem small.
Those are the ones that create ripple effects that change lives.
📣 Engage in Constructive Conversations
Not everyone will vote like us… but some are still figuring it out.
And a compassionate conversation can shift things more than we realize.
💸 Support Grassroots Campaigns and Bail Funds
Money moves things. If you have it, use it wisely. If you don’t, share and uplift the ones who are doing the work.
🌱 Create Community-Based Alternatives
When systems fail, mutual aid thrives.
If you can’t change the world overnight, you can change the world for someone.
Joyfully, we will rise.
Let me say this clearly:
Your joy is not naïve.
Your hope is not weak.
Your vision for a better world is not delusional.
Joy is rebellion.
It’s your refusal to be defined by despair.
It’s your way of saying, “You don’t get to take my light, too.”
Hope is a spell.
One that grows stronger every time you speak life into what could be.
So while they panic, we plan.
While they scream, we sing.
While they cling to control, we practice care.
This Time, We Build Differently
The matriarchal model isn’t about control – it’s about care.
It’s about power with, not power over.
It’s about asking:
- What if policies centered the most vulnerable first?
- What if softness wasn’t seen as weakness?
- What if success meant we all had enough, not just a lucky few?
This isn’t a fantasy.
It’s a framework.
And it’s waiting for us to say yes.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Gina! I needed this post desperately right now. With the chaos all around, it’s hard to hold on to hope. I can’t fully express my gratitude for your uplifting words. I so appreciate the light you shine for the rest of us. Thank you again!
Thank you Gina! I really needed to hear that this morning.
Dear Gina,
I was meant to find this today, and I’m so glad I did! Thank you so much for this well thought out and beautifully written, clarion call.
Just remember, what we resist, persists. So this softness you speak of , is what is needed now.
It’s not a pushback resistance but a let it go and watch it flow, kind of thing. Like a dead leaf floating down a river and out to sea. And in the meantime do what we can to help ourselves and each other. Hope springs eternal.
It’s time to tend your garden, observe and prepare. Wash that tin foil and learn a new craft…… things our grandmothers knew.
