why I didn't resolve to lose weight

I've been kinda scared to talk about losing weight here, because that's not why you visit. I mean, it's January, and you're already bombarded with every other person you know talking about it on Facebook & Twitter & well... pretty much everywhere! Last weekend, I shared via Instagram that I had to buy new jeans - three sizes smaller than my old ones. Immediately I started getting questions about if I was losing weight. When I said I'd lost nearly 40 pounds, I got even more questions. So, I thought I'd share how I've changed my life a little and it got me into smaller jeans.

First things first: my weight loss wasn't a resolution that popped up when the calendar flipped. I actually started before Thanksgiving, and didn't even tell my husband I was doing if for the first 2 weeks. I didn't start some radical new weight loss plan. I'm not taking a magic pill. It pretty much boils down to two things....

eating croissants & playing games. Ok...ok...ok... it's really more about eating & moving.

What I eat is real, amazing food. I have much smaller portions than I did before, but I eat food that's so good it looks like it came from some famous French bistro. I take the time to actually enjoy it - slowing down the pace. Eating shouldn't be a race - I slowed down to enjoy every. single. bite. Doing that led to me eating much, much less and being satisfied longer between meals. I prepare 99% of the meals that I eat, which is turning me into something I never thought I would be: a foodie.

Going on a diet never worked for me. Seriously - I never stick with it more than 2 weeks, and then I end up gaining it all back. I'm not dieting, I've altered my eating, and plan on eating this way for the rest of my life. Since I'm heading towards 3 months into it, my only regret is that I didn't do this sooner.

Now let's talk about moving. I'm addicted to Just Dance, partly because it's fun, but even more because it's 2-3 hours a day that I get to spend just being goofy with my girls. What's better than dancing & laughing & having fun - with a bonus of losing weight?

So that's my big secret. Not really a secret, huh? Eat less, move more. The big thing was I learned how to eat things and how to move more, both which make me ridiculously happy. And fitting into smaller jeans, well that's just icing on the proverbial cake :)

What does this mean for my blog? Well, it's not turning into my weight loss journal (though you can follow @ShabbyCreek on Instagram if you want to cheer me on.) I may be posting a few more recipes, but y'all seem to be liking those, anyway :) Other than that, not a thing. Except I might actually get more DIY done, because I have WAY more energy now. Just wanted to share my story with you.

Hope you're having a great weekend!

  3. You go girl! I love Just Dance on the Wii too, it's fun to do with my kids although some of the songs on Just Dance 3 are not kid appropriate in my opinion. And sharing recipes on the blog is just an added bonus. Everyone likes food, right? :) Are you going to Haven this year?

  4. good for you!!! I hear you not wanting to share at first because of everyone's new year resolutions..frankly it drives me bananas why people think they must start losing weight because of resolutions than doing it because they truly want to. congrats to three sizes down! :)

  5. I decided two years ago, not to diet, but just to get healthy. What a difference the two things are, as you and I have discovered! Congratulations on your progress; being healthy is soooo awesome!

  7. Good work Gina...I feel exactly the same way about the changes I've made too. Not a diet...just something different, something that is healthier. I love our wii....getting lots of calories burned while we play. I'm down 25 and I'd love to take off another 25...but I'm just taking it one day at a time and loving how the changes have changed me! xoxo love from muskoka

  9. That's fantastic. It took me a long time to realize that a diet was never going to work for me and that I actually had to change the way I eat and be healthy...super big plus when you find an exercise you love. Congrats!

  10. Woo! Hoo! Congratulations on your progress so far! Don't you feel like a new person? I lost 30 pounds a couple years ago and could not believe the difference in the way I felt....and looked! I am on the quest now to lose some more....by eating healthier and walking every day (almost). I would love for you to share more recipes...and once again, I love your blog!

  11. Good for you, Gina! :) I know exactly what you mean---my husband was trying to get "us" to start some insane workout program P90X or something like that and I knew exactly what would happen. I'd try it once or twice, get frustrated, and quit. Instead, I started cutting back on caffeine/sodas, etc. I don't know that I've lost any weight, but I feel a little better. It's baby steps for me.

    You look great. :)

  16. So inspiring! I've struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. I can't remember a time when I wasn't actively trying to lose weight or saying "screw it" and eating with wild abandon. And I'm just DONE. So this is the year of cooking healthy food because it's better for my boys and moving more because it's healthy for me. I look forward to following your journey on insta!

I am so inspired by your post. I once had a weight loss blog and I understand how hard it is to put it ALL out there. Hearing your attitude about health and not diet shows that you are on the road to success. I am rooting for and with you, as I'm in the same boat to drop some poundage!
Congrats on your success so far and I can't wait to see more of your success!

  38. That is so wonderful, Gina! My hubby and I started following a low-carb way of eating (won't call it a diet because that says temporary to me). We have and continue to lose weight and inches, and we are eating regular food. We feel great as I'm sure you do, too! Continued good luck to you!

  39. We are more then just diy though and I am so happy you shared! Good for you. That has to feel wonderful!! Yay YOU :) I've been up, and I've been down, and I know how hard it can be. Really happy for you :)

  40. You go, Gina! It was brave to share, but you are being so smart about what you're doing. I'm struggling with some extra weight right now, too, and I'm following your plan. Real food, not too much, and moving regularly. Best wishes!

  41. Congratulations, Gina! Good for you! I don't do sugar or white flour anymore and the difference is amazing. Isn't it a wonderful feeling to be buying down a size instead of up a size...or 2....or 3. God bless you- Your kids will really benefit as much as you do! xo Diana

  42. So fantastic! If only everyone realized it really is that simple: eat less and love more! I'm doing that too, and another thing that I'm hoping will help is overcoming my addiction to Coca cola. Just switching to water reduced my caloric intake by hundreds a day.
Keep up the good work and we will both be sporting new bodies come spring!

  43. You'll be successful because you have made healthy changes instead of going on a "diet"!! I'm only 5 ft. tall and I've gone from 205 to 110 in the past 13 months. Size 22 pants to size 4. I look and feel 20 years younger!! No more high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Healthy eating and regular exercise is the way to go!!

    Keep up the good work!!

  44. Thanks for sharing, and for reminding us what the amazing weight loss secret is (simply eating less and moving more). I've been eating more and moving less, so I needed the gentle reminder that it's time to switch those back around. Congrats on losing 40 pounds - that's freaking amazing, great job!

  51. So happy for you!Eating healthy is the best! You feel good on the inside and out! UGH working out is something I don't enjoy LOL!But I too need to get moving. Not to lose weight just to get into shape. When you get into your mid 40's like me :-) you need to get moving.Things start to hurt a little more when you are using it.I like just dance now they have just dance 4 or is it five I don't know that you can use as a work out.I think I may try that just hope I don't hurt myself LOL.I gave myself tennis elbow from playing wii bowling!

  55. Way to go girl! It's hard to change a way of life and that what weight loss is. I lost 80lbs, but the hard way... I got sick. I still find it hard to keep the weight off and to be honest I did put about 15 lbs back on that I notice in the way my hips and knees start that familiar ache. I'm still no skinny, little thing by ANY means, but I too find I have more energy and just feel better. Congrats!!!!!!!! Oh, and I always love a good recipe from time to time!!!
