Farmhouse Laundry Room Makeover (for under $200)

A couple of weeks ago on Instagram Live, I shared a little behind the scenes on our weekend farmhouse laundry room makeover. It was a super quick & cheap overhaul – but boy, oh boy! What an impact! I knew that I needed a little project to scratch my “gotta remodel something” itch – and while we’re a bit away from the kitchen job (that’s gonna be a humdinger of a project!), I figured a quick little revamp would do the trick.

So let’s check out the before. Actually, this is the before, before. This is where our laundry room started six years ago. We gave it a fast makeover then, but I’ve felt like it was too dark & the cabinets were too heavy. However we had a LOT of projects on our list, so a super fast job to get it in order held up a long time.

In our last laundry room makeover, the door got fresh paint, the floors were refinished & the cabinets got new doors. Not too shabby – but it was still felt pretty boxed in. Which is exactly why we did this…

The biggest thing we did was rip out the cabinets & metal wall (it sucked up ALL the light) and replaced it with our beloved plybead, just like in all the other rooms of our house.

Then we took simple brackets and made a single, long open shelf. I was worried we would have issues with the open shelving – then I realized that most of what was hidden behind all those doors was useless crap that I needed to kick to the curb anyway.

It’s not a drastic change that cost a fortune, but it seriously made a massive difference in the sense of size you get when standing in there. It’s brighter, lighter & definitely more like a farmhouse laundry room πŸ™‚

Gina, I love how you quickly updated your laundry room! The open shelves were a great idea. They really make the room look bigger. Great job!

I’m curious to know if the little cabinet with the louvered door is a broom closet or if you hid the water heater behind it?

I love how the new laundry room turned out and as always I love love love your wooden floors with the “nail holes” showing. It is my all time favorite wood flooring idea.

How do you reach your laundry soap? Do you have to climb the step stool every time? (I don’t do ladders anymore. Not with these knees!)

Gina – love it! I too live in a double-wide mobile home. Everyone tells me I can’t change out the back door because it is not a standard size. Your door is lovely. Did you have it customized for the opening?

Looks great the only other change I would make is to add a decorative track light…..they can be positioned to shine in any direction you like…. https://www.lampsplus.com/products/pro-track-bendlin-industrial-4-light-bronze-track-fixture__8g640.html (No, I am not affiliated with them

Thanks Rita, I purchased the hamper at an awesome vintage shop near Memphis and the table we built ourselves! You can too, here is a link to the post with a full tutorial on how to do it πŸ™‚ https://www.theshabbycreekcottage.com/how-to-build-a-kitchen-island.html?fbclid=IwAR2fDXpbKm2vk9EGHpCxVo2sh1iCYsud8wyBZ_Niy4HPPFzAGa0QW6qbl-U

It looks beautiful, but I wouldn’t want to climb up to that shelf every time I needed something off of it.
